#396 of 4,876 hotels in Shanghai
Designed by the French architect Lafayette in 1932 and located in the vibrant heart of the historic French Concession, this luxuriously restored heritage boutique hotel offers the city’s most authentic experience of ‘Old Shanghai’. Formerly headquarters of Shanghai vice boss Du Yuesheng, the Mansion Hotel was once the nerve centre of an opium empire and scene of some of roaring Shanghai’s most decadent parties. Hundreds of artifacts and photographs attest to its colourful past, as you relax into its lavish modern-day incarnation.

Marvellous house which has been carefully refurbished years ago but since then badly groomed. What a pitty for this hughe potential this hotel has. The carpets need urgently replacment, cabinets tend to fall apart and the cleanliness is not always suffiecient. Breakfast is a joke... Defently overpriced! Go there only if you're retro-design enthusiast since it's really worth to see it, but having a coffee in the lobby is probably the better idea than to stay overnight. What a pity!!!

This hotel is FABULOUS! If you like boutique hotels with a generous dollop of history its for you! Our room was unreal, huge with a terrace and a bathroom to die for! Sumptuously appointed with velvet and antiques yet all the modern conveniences you would want. The rooftop long was a great spot for a drink and the front courtyard another great spot to rely and enjoy a drink under a gazebo by a gorgeous pond. Located in the French Concession area, this hotel is walking distance to the subway and a myriad of streets overloaded with boutiques and restaurants. Safe and clean with well lit walkways we enjoyed strolling and shopping each night after dinner. Highly recommend this spot!

I would never stay in this hotel again even if someone paid me to do so. Mould in bathroom and walls, very dirty carpet, inadequate cleaning since I found a packet of cigaretes from the previous person that stayed in my room and people in the reception just dont care!!! I arrived with 3 bags, no-one there to help. In the breakfast I was waiting 10 minutes for someone to come and get the order (yes you have to fill a paper with your selection of things you want) and it looked as if i am invisible for the employees. This hotel should have been a real gem if worked properly but it is left deserted. Not even the health inspection cares since if this was Europe it would have been closed permanently for the mould.. The only reason I give 2 stars instead of 1 is the very good location and the polite girl in the reception my last day there that was helpful, tried to speak English and help me with a taxi.

The history behind this hotel is nice but the overall experience was terrible. The service is slow and not customer focussed. It took ages to check-in and one of my colleague was given a room already busy! The bathroom was dirty. The “breakfast” should be avoided. It is a shame: this hotel could be nice but many significant issues should be fixed.

Lovely garden and lovely. Once a private home this hotel today is an oasis in the city. Charming boutique hotel with lots of history. It does need better maintenance and upkeep. The gardens are beautiful as is the rooftop terrace. Staff is good, but only a handful speak English.
