I got off the train in Shanghai without a hotel reservation, but was planning to pop into a cafe to check the internet for a hotel when a nice old lady offered to find me a room.

Well, I ended up with this hotel.

The walls look like they are covered with grime, footprints, and dried fluids of unknown origin. The carpet smells like carpet shampoo or Chinese white liquor. I have yet to shower.

When I called to ask for another room, I was told they are all like that.

Impossible to get a refund, because I paid the "nice" old lady at the train station rather than the hotel itself.

2 lessons learned; never return to this hotel and don't use hotels offered at the train station.

Good:
1. Convenient. Few walking distance to Nanjing Rd Pedestrian Street, shopping galore right at your doorstep! There's a 24hrs Convenient store on the ground level of the hotel.

2. Good cheap food nearby the hotel area. For Muslims, there's even a Chinese Muslim restaurant (halal) that serves great beef noodle (10 yuan) & other noodle & rice dishes just opposite the main entrance of the hotel.

3. Most of the front service staff speak english. They even help you write the chinese character from english translation (for easy navigation because most Shanghainese don't understand english). They're also helpful & friendly. Even the chambermaid, bellboy & other staff are friendly helpful people.

4. Rooms are clean though a little bit dusty. Beddings & towels are changed everyday. Toilet is clean.

Bad:
1. The street (alley) going to the hotel is not that pleasant. (But it's just a few walks before you find...

Staying in People’s Square

Neighborhood Profile
People’s Square
People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers. Shanghai residents, meanwhile, live and work in the many residential and office high-rises. While much of Shanghai stays busy late into the night, this really is an area that never sleeps with glitzy nightclubs keeping people up until the wee hours of the morning.
