On a short visit to Shaghai, stayed only two nights. Situated in a busy location, very crowded mostly Chinese guests. Too packed and busy. No shopping or other activities accessible by walk. There was no breakfast.

I have never put a review on Trip Advisor but felt it so important to following my stay at Bothland Hotel in Shanghai. I want to save anyone else from making a huge mistake. I have just returned from an amazing time in China. My first week was spent in Beijing at the luxurious China World Hotel which was 5*...

I have no idea where to start. Basically the hotel is horrible. They have no idea how to run a basic clean hotel. My hotel room was smelling of damp. The bathroom mould everywhere was actually scared to shower or even move the shower curtain in case cockroaches jumped onto me. Every time I steeped out of the lift the...

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.

“Don't book here!”
  • Popped them on and they fell apart.
  • Lovely that they gave free slippers, but literally paper thin
  • The hairdryer was taped when I arrived. Fell apart and was then re-taped.
  • Our bedroom carpet which wasn't clean when we arrived and didn't see a hoover or a broom
  • Plug something in at your own risk
  • Room curtains which were broken and dirty.
  • We never used this. Would you?
  • Frayed, old, thin and...unwearable!
