I arrived to find that, as an avid swimmer, my much hoped-for pool was non-existent. The hotel has been converted in recent years to apartments. Now there are, I think they said, 50 rooms. After my serious red-eye from SFO and Dallas, I was looking forward to the "heavenly to sleep on king-size bed". Probably great post-back surgery but waaay...

Not the best place I have stayed in and have stayed in worse, staff not very friendly, average rooms, a 20 minute walk to the Bund with restaurants all around, in a very local area with lots of construction happening everywhere, great to walk the local streets and watch the locals.

Our room was very large and had a view across the harbor. The beautiful new and amazing buildings across the harbor were so great. They had a light show in the building every night. Service was outstanding. This hotel is very new and is the lasted hotel built in the Peninsula chain. It had free international calling. Everything in the room...

I fell for the most common scam in Shanghai and got dragged into a bar on level 5 of this hotel and was extored for over $1300 after imported whisky I never ordered came flowing and I was physically held in a room until I ran the bill through on my credit card. After reporting to the police the following...

This hotel must have been better at one time to get a four star rating. The main doors are not in use , entrance via small doorway into equally small dingy reception area. Check in was ok & staff spoke good English. Trying to find lifts that worked was a game. The corridor from the lift to the room on....

The deco of the room was modern. Bed was very comfortable and the size of the room was decent. The bar at the top floor has a very good view too. I've also tried the Chinese restaurant and it is not recommended. I requested for an in-room massage but they said "no no no, it's only for men"! I was...

Have stayed at his hotel 6 times before over last 5 years an always given it a good rating, but just booked 5 night stay and left after 2 nights.I think hotel is nearly bankrupt or something. We were disappointed that the pool was closed, and no work was being done on it. There were few other guests. I can eat almost anything, but the breakfast was well below standard and I left most of it. Having said that, when we returned for one night three weeks later, they'd moved the breakfast room to the ground floor,...

We had a weeks visit to Shanghai. The city is exiting place with must to see and do. This hotel was a disaster. The hotel may have been quit nice many many years ago. No it looks like being next to bankruptcy. All the advertising in the web is in one word misleading. Nothing matched the impression given on the...

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
