This hotel is very nice, and has a lot of history, which shows. You can either decide that the whole experience has a vintage feel to it or that the place looks dated. I go with vintage. Astor House Hotel is extremely well located, within walking distance of the Bund and a Starbucks. My room was clean, quite big, quiet... More

This is a very strange hotel perfectly located next to the Bund; unfortunately they seem to have the best not to have an inch of water front , but it ok anyway as told, the hotel had a sense of vintage, more because there is no way to hide it more that a real will. But the rooms are nice,... More

Great location just a short walk to the buns and maybe about 15min walk to Nanjing Road. The guys at check in were great the ladies at check out were a little rude but nothing bad. Hotel has amazing history and definitely worth a stay. The room was clean and comfortable. One thing was they put rubber matts in the... More

Historic and beautiful, this hotel was a great value on the Bund. Huge room, very clean and also so quiet. Best sleep of my trip. Easy walk to food and subway. Take time to view the museum in the third floor. Breakfast was so so, but also affordable.

Stayed here for five nights on a recent trip to China. This hotel is very old world. Lovely big rooms with lots to choose from for breakfast. Staff very friendly and helpful. Good value for money. The location is excellent. The hotel is in walking distance to the Bund and nanjing road.

Arrived not long after breakfast time but they still let us check in to our room. A bit shabby but clean and comfortable with great amenities and a fascinating history. It was our first night in China and, although Shanghai is quite westernised, it was a good introduction to the country. Amazing breakfast buffet with everything from steamed buns and... More

We loved this hotel - great location at the Bund, so much history with stories of Albert Einstein, Margot Fonteyne and so many more! We had Margot's room! Spacious, comfortable with magnificent parquetry floor and comfy bed. Wandering through the hotel, we discovered the ballroom and many historical facts about this hotel - once called The Richards Hotel. Would highly... More

Our room was large and even had a small additional room where we put the cot for my snoring husband. The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms modern and the rooms were quiet. The breakfast buffet was ample with Chinese and western choices including cereal and eggs made to order. We enjoyed a snack in the lovely La Vie en Rose... More

We were suggested this hotel and easily found it on booking.com. We arrived in the morning and were able to get into our room immediately. We dropped our bags and walked out the front door, across the bridge and were immediately on the Bund. Great. Our room is quaint and lovely. We enjoyed the decorations and size. Neat little extras... We were lucky to be upgraded to the Richard Suite which had 5 balconeys, 2 of which overlooked to the Bund and river. Standing on the balconey felt like being in Evita! The Suite was huge and gorgeous. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice. We caught the Ferry from Osaka to Shanghai (well worth it) and the terminal was... More

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
