A heritage hotel that has accommodated Charlie Chaplin, Albert Einstein and other celebrities as its customers in its heyday. Some parts are a little worn but the rooms are spacious and comfortable. It's conveniently- located and just a short walk across the bridge to the Bund. Don't bother with the breakfast.

In a country where most hotels, even the best ones, tend to be soulless glass and chrome, it's nice to have a place to stay with a little character. She's an old gal to be sure, perhaps not what she was in the old days and best if not photographed in too bright a light but the charm is there.... More

The Astor is ideally situated to see the sights along The Bund Waterfront in Shanghai. It is an old hotel with much history attached. Once inside though the historical aspects pale into insignificance when confronted with the dilapidated state of the place. Our bedroom was large but had only one bedside table and almost nothing by the way of drawers... More

This hotel is at the north end of the Bund and is ideally situated to explore Shanghai. The hotel is itself a museum piece, very stylish, but is a little faded in the public areas. Our rooms were directly above the main entrance, and were well appointed and comfortable, and quiet, thankfully well glazed windows. If you want a hotel... More

This place is definitely worth seeing. Felt a bit like I was staying in an Agatha Christie novel. Fascinating historical decor, not your standard corporate hotel for sure. Only stayed one night and largely out seeing Shanghai but the hotel seemed quiet, and the location is fantastic. To reiterate: Definitely worth seeing!

It is a beautiful and conveniently located hotel with great service. Yet my room was not very well maintained and had a musty old odor. Also, do not pay for the breakfast buffet, it was horrible. Opt for the breakfast served in the lobby cafe.

The location is excellent, central close to the Bund, is the major attraction. The hotel needs a brushup-up. In one of our rooms, the air conditioning only worked in a heating mode. The staff is friendly and helpful, but most do not speak English. Also, the are unable to give much assistance on flight and train bookings.

Our stay in the hotel was good, but we had to ask for a room change as the first room we got upon arrival was awful, old, not renovated, in a corner. After the room change, the room we stayed in had been modernized, had a great view over the river and was very comfortable. Our advice to other travellers... More

I had a great time at the Astor House but there were a few problems. I made my reservation 8 months in advance and asked for a view of some sort. I just didn't want to face a wall. Of course I got no view but a wall. Understandable as they can't give everybody what they want. I probably could... More

We checked into this hotel very late in the evening, and service wasn't fantastic. However, we arrived at the same time as a large group, so they were just a little overwhelmed. The hotel lobby has old world charm but smelled heavily of stale cigarette smoke. We were given no directions to our room, but finally a porter took pity... More

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
