Since 1929, the Fairmont Peace Hotel boasts a history that overshadows any other hotel in Asia. Its origins date back more than a century, serving as a glamorous playground, where every night was an extravagance. Each guestroom is an indulgent, exquisite and modern experience. Its dining venues are the most prestigious on the Bund, with magnificent views of the Bund and Pudong skyline, the European elegance defines The Cathay Room with terraces while Chinese art and legend characterise the Shanghainese cuisine of the Dragon Phoenix. The Jasmine Lounge is famous for its high tea tradition while the Jazz Bar faithfully continues a Shanghai institution: The world-famous Old Jazz Band. Consisting of six veteran musicians whose average age is 82, has drawn an audience of locals, international travelers, celebrities and heads of states, Clinton, Reagan, Obama and Trudeau to name a few. People come from all over the world for this unique experience. Not to be missed.

To keep it short: Stayed for the first time in this "premium-hotel" and it will be the last time. Nice location and heritage building but some staff and employees with lack of service and customer orientation. Premium is more than expensive and shiny materials it's also an expression of excellence in well-trained employees and full commitment for the guest.

My husband and I enjoyed a staycation in Shanghai last weekend - and chose the Fairmont Peace Hotel - to explore the streets and restaurants at the Bund. We can’t recommend it highly enough - the 1 BR suite was very spacious and luxurious - yet cozy - the view of LJZ and the NanjingXiLu pedestrian way was right outside our window, yet once the curtains were closed, very quiet and restful. We enjoyed the afternoon tea on the 9th floor lounge and had the perfect dirty martini, made by Leslie, at the Jazz Bar before heading out for the evening. Breakfast exceeded our expectation. We will definitely return to enjoy this treasure - timeless feel of a glamorous time gone-by combined with the most modern amenities. Special thanks to Matthieu Bertho, Hospitality Extraordinaire for making our stay so memorable. Bob and Sunny Pratt Shanghai

The Fairmount Peace Hotel is refined and elegant every step of the way. From the entrance through to the lobby and the beautifully maintained Jasmine lounge. I came today to celebrate my birthday and was treated very well. The afternoon tea was delicious - the menu is well considered and every mouthful was a taste sensation. Edward asked if my friend and I would like to learn to dance with one of the instructors; Avender arranged for the band to play happy birthday and I got a wonderful cake with candle. Lacey waited on us all afternoon and when my friends mask broke they took it away and sewed the strap back on for him (it was originally glued!). This may not be a cheap experience but it was worth every penny and we had a fabulous time. Highly recommend.

The Fairmont Peace Hotel is a must if you are visiting or living in Shanghai! I booked a one bedroom suite with gold lounge privileges for my husbands 40th birthday and we were not disappointed. From checking in on a separate floor to the delicious afternoon tea, hors d’oeuvres and drinks in the evening it was well worth the money. The room was well presented, spacious and elegant. The bed was so comfortable and the bathroom products were outstanding. My husband received birthday greetings upon arrival at the hotel and throughout our stay. The personalised touch of a cake in the room and a Victor teddy was well received! We ate an amazing dinner in the Cathy restaurant and had drinks on the terrace with spectacular views of the river. Our weekend was complete with a visit to the jazz bar. My husband was overwhelmed when the jazz band sang happy birthday to him and he received another birthday cake. It was like stepping back in time. The hotel has retained many of its old features which adds to the ambience and exquisite feel of the hotel. We have lived in Shanghai for ten years and are disappointed that this was our first stay at the Fairmont Peace Hotel. We will definitely be booking another staycation! Thank you to all the staff who went above and beyond to make our stay such a memorable and wonderful experience.

All in all, I had a great stay at Fairmont Peace. Their rooms are beautifully decorated, and the location is great. Their jazz bar is an experience - and they have an amazing restaurant. But funny enough, my highs and lows for this stay were both connected to their breakfast. High: For my first morning, I was treated to awesome service in their breakfast room. After ordering an omelette without meat at the egg station, I was shortly after greeted at my table by an amazingly friendly chef, who recognized my dietary needs and offered to specially prepare a vegetarian or seafood version of their signature noodles. They were delicious! I recognize that this was extraordinary service at breakfast during high-peak season. For the three remaining nights, I had reserved a room with lounge access. The service in the lounge was mostly impeccable (the team working up there is incredibly hard-working). But the lounge was also crowded, a little worn-down, dark and had a somewhat «dusty feeling». It is on the 9th floor but do not expect much of a view (the jewel view-wise is certainly not the lounge but their amazing restaurant). On my last evening, the lounge was more quiet, and it was finally a really enjoyable experience. But back to the breakfast low: On the third morning, when arriving at the lounge for breakfast, there were no available tables. It turned out the breakfast room downstairs was also full, so they had invited overflow guests up to the lounge. It frankly looked a bit chaotic. So I was sent back to my room and offered to order something for free from the room service menu. I recognize that they tried to accommodate - but ordering from the limited room-service menu (in particularly limited for someone not eating meat) was very disappointing after already getting up, showering and seeing the well-stocked buffet in the lounge. It also added waiting time for my breakfast and delayed my day, so if a similar situation occurs again, I think it would be much better to offer the guest to bring some items from the buffet back to the room (or to avoid that situation in the first place, of course). I highly recommend a visit to their jazz bar, and their traditional high tea in the restaurant on ground level. But the real pearl of Fairmont Peace is the Cathay Room restaurant: Awesome food, great service, stunning view. It will be a highlight for all my future trips to Shanghai. My room: The room itself was very well designed and equipped - but my absolute favourite was the bath-room. Beautiful and spacious! There was a noise issue one of the nights, road-works going on just outside my room until the early morning. I have to admit it was a bit upsetting when going on - but I don’t think the hotel could be blamed for that. The gym: Small but well equipped. A very nice yoga room next door was my favourite. So all in all, absolutely worth a revisit - although probably not during peak season.
