You'd expect a catering to foreign travelers of a Western origin at a Hyatt property, and you'd be right. But the numbernum domestic travelers also present speaks to the quality of the accommodations; it's a great home base for a stay in Shanghai. The location in the financial district of Lujuazui is both a positive and a negative. Pluses: the views are fantastic, with many rooms getting a look at the Bund, the Oriental Pearl, and the seemingly endless, hazy stretch of skyscrapers off into the western distance; commuting *out* in the morning and *in* in the evening is also counter to the flow of traffic, which is both good and bad—it's less of a crunch, but you'll be playing dodgeball against an ocean of phone-absorbed people in the other direction of travel. Definite minus: as a business center, it's more sterile with less to do, by design. Expect to travel a bit if you have any adventures planned. The staff was friendly and helpful during my stay. Check-in was way too long at 20 minutes of waiting after a long day of travel, but from there everyone was very professional and courteous. English was neither perfect nor uniform across the staff, but I think it's arrogant to expect that; you're in a nice hotel, not the embassy of your home country. At it was, even when there was some confusion (like when I asked for some ''hairspray" and it wasn't clear what it was), it was quick and pleasant to work through, which is more than I can say about my failed attempts to set up AliPay. I only attended the included breakfast in terms of food, and it was more than suitable for what I needed. Varied spread with sweet & savory Western favorites (pastries, French toast, sausage, bacon, eggs) as well as a few tame but still interesting takes on local food. Made to order stations were good, though sometimes busy. My only major gripe was that it took a long, long time to get coffee; be prepared to ask multiple times (and sometimes eventually get duplicate orders) if you're at all in a hurry. The housekeeping was impeccable and very accommodating of my weird schedules that sometimes had me still at my desk during normal cleaning times. The electronic "do not disturb" button was very helpful for this. Overall, it's not a real experience in China by any stretch, but then neither is Shanghai. Whether you're looking for a centrally-located home for tourism or a convenient spot for business, though, Grand Hyatt Shanghai does a good job. I'll return on subsequent visits.

Stayed here for business for 5 nights and the hotel served its purpose of being a decent business hotel but a few minor snags. Checkin was smooth and the receptionist spoke really good English (sometimes a struggle in China) and I was super pleased that they had upgraded my room so overall a good start. The room was super spacious a really nice neutral decor. The attached bathroom was huge, with a big round bath tub (didn’t use) and an adjacent shower cubicle. The WC was in a separate part of the bathroom too. The bathroom wasn’t really to my taste but still it was very clean and had decent toiletries. The rooms could do with a bit more storage space and they also need to upgrade the crappy irons. The iron plate had black stuff stuck to it which then stuck to my white shirt and was a pain to remove. Could have complained but didn’t get time. The breakfast selection was so so. The international selection was quite limited and didn’t vary at all so by day 3 was totally bored of it. It’s also a real shame that a 5 star hotel of this quality still has to serve juices from a packet. I asked for a fresh juice and they said they don’t have any. The views from all aspects of the hotel are stunning and the bar on the 87th floor is worth a visit. The only disappointment at the bar is the wine selection. They really are serving cheap wine at marked up prices - I mean Jacobs Creek?? Would definitely recommend the hotel and the 4 star is well deserved but probably needs a few more improvements before I give it a 5 star.

Got the opportunity to join my father on a business trip in/a round the city and this was the hotel we stayed at. It was magnificent and our room was incredible. It had a bathroom where you could lay in the hot tub and see all “the small “ people walking under you... Amazing

I wanted especially thank Steven (a manger at the 56/F restaurant) for being extremely accommodating in my breakfast request. I typically dont eat breakfast, but given I am have a day of travelling ahead of me and expecting to not be able to eat a proper lunch, I have decided to eat a small breakfast. He was able to accommodate without any issue. Now that's the service that one would expect at the Grand Hyatt chain! Keep up the great work.
