Yes, I do agree with people who commented about reception. Very limited English, super slow, some of them were rude- no eye contact and bad manager. I asked for the information about the lounge and one of reception staff told me “I don’t know” I asked her to ask her colleagues and all she kept saying was “I don’t know”. After I checked out from the app, I went to reception to return cards, she didn’t even make any eye contact, almost ignored me, I spoke to her in mandarin, she made very annoyed face expression and just took the cards away. We stayed here last December, we really enjoyed our stays, not sure what happened but it was unpleasant staycation.

This hotel is mediocre at best. We stayed here because my wife just arrived in China and we needed a hotel that would accept guests who just completed quarantine and didn’t have a registered digital health code. We picked this hotel for that specific reason and notified the hotel in advance of that requirement. Even with the advanced coordination, the check in staff still insisted that all guests must have a digital health code and that papers from the quarantine center were insufficient. While the front desk clerk backed down after I explained that it’s not possible for a person who just left the quarantine center to have such a code, I found the hassle off-putting. At the times of reservation (one week before our stay) I requested executive lounge access and my employer’s travel arranger confirmed that access. At the time of check in, Lindsay (front desk clerk) said that I had access and explained the hours and amenities. About two hours later I tried to access the lounge but my key card didn’t work. I went back to the front desk and spoke to another clerk (Lily) who couldn’t find my lounge access in my reservation so she offered me “one time access for free.” I checked the lounge which only served soft drinks during the afternoon and nothing else until evening and then decided not to pursue the matter further as it didn’t seem worthwhile. I’m still annoyed that my request for lounge access was lost somehow and no attempt made by the hotel to find out why. Breakfast is good in variety and quality but the dining room is dingy and poorly attended. On Thursday of my stay I had to instruct a member of the staff to clean a table for us. Many tables were vacant but still littered with dirty dishes and food crumbs. A guest should never have to tell staff to clean a table. Room service was iffy at best. The clerk who took my order could not understand me and struggled with English. I understand that Wu and Mandarin are the languages of Shanghai but I consider English language assistance as part of the service that costs 1,650 RMB per night. Despite all of the shortcomings in service, this isn’t a bad hotel. The rooms are clean, reasonably spacious, and comfortable. The housekeeping staff do a great job. The views are amazing as all of the guest rooms are on high floors. In short, this hotel is okay but overpriced. It’s just not worth the premium. Throughout our week long stay we felt tolerated but not welcomed. I think we’ll try another place on our next visit to Shanghai. There are many other places available at this price range.

I LOVE Marriott! So I m more disappointed than anyone else! I stay with Marriott all my career and all my holidays, I check to see if the distinction has a Marriott before I decide to go. Tomorrow Square JW is like a home away from home for me. When I returned this time, the whole front desk is new and slow, lack of training made the check in process super slow and I finally gave up and left our passports at the front desk, No one bother to return them and I finally asked to have them put in my room. I started to do self service for my coffee at the breakfast, the manager is super busy and the waiters had no clue, walked around slowly and aimlessly. I felt bad for the manager. When I checked out, they asked me twice if I had any expenses, I already informed them that I had no additional expenses. Tonight I came back to stay at JW again. Called to order room service and the At Your Service answered the phone had no idea what are on the menu. The server came 4 times to bring the food, the ice cream first and of course by the time we eat them, they had melted even after I put them in the frig. The server brought the white wine in a red wine glass, 1/4 filled and he argued with me that it is 150 ml and said that his manager said it was enough, I asked if the manager had poured the wine, he said no. He took away the wine and returned with more and by this time the wine glass is sweating and I told him that I will sign the bill but he needs to serve the wine cold the next time, he was not happy with the feedback and walked away pouting. The At Your Service called back and explained the failure, at 1 am! Said that they are all new. I asked if they are interns then they need people to supervise them, if they started to work then they need to act professionally, like know your products and like service the room service all at once, like knowing the difference between red and white wines. A five star hotel should not be arguing with its loyal customers and explained its failure, what is the point?? and should have the basic professionalism. I m so so disappointed. I asked to speak to the F and B manager tomorrow, the At Your Service lady said she does not know what is F and B and also said she does not know anyone because she is new. Disappointed disappointed disappointed, what happened to my favorite JW???

JW Marriott never disappoints me and this time too. I stayed with my girlfriend to celebrate her birthday and we got a delicious birthday cake and a warming hand-writing birthday greeting card from Sharon, one of the considerate customer care staff team I believe. Absolutely 5 star recommendation and will stay again if any further opportunities come!
