The room was very small and run down. Small windon and smelly bathroom. Comfortable bed. Needs refurbishment. OK Breakfast with nice service. Location is very good. Lobby was OK, but also needs to be spruced up. Reception was OK.

Finding the hotel was not easy as it doesn't have great signage and the street numbers are not visible, even for a Shanghai taxi driver. There was one young lady working at the front desk when I arrived late at night. She would be there the next morning, too, having worked through the night. She was nice and tried to...

Location was amazing right by the Bund and surrounded by many good restatants. That was a good thing considering i had no idea the hotel didnt have one. I tried to order room service as i saw they offer on TripAdvisor but i was informed they do not offer this service. The price was good and the room was cozy,...

I've been at 8 Art Hotel for a week. I got room 232 and it was great: it is set-up as bedroom of a painter, so you'll find all the necessary equipment. This also creates a pleasant and welcoming feeling. On the other side, it is not standard room, there's no fridge or cabinet or sofa. As you might guess,...

We had two rooms at this delightful hotel for a weekend in in Shanghai. It is so well placed on The Bund for discovering Shanghai and at a very reasonable price which for us included afternoon tea. The room was small but very comfortable and well fitted out for its size with a comfortable double bed and a very adequate...

8 Art Hotel is in a great location just 50m from the Bund at Yan'An Road, the reception area and restaurant look great and some of the rooms are nice too. The roof top looks really nice and would be a nice place to relax in summer (no Bund view). This is unfortunately were the good review ends. As said...

Very reasonable for the location, boutique artsy style hotel. A stone's throw from the Bund. Breakfast included in the rate was fine to start the day. Coffee very good. Nice small patio for sitting out and eating breakfast!. Rooftop bar area is so cool. Nice for doing stretches (tai chi!) in the early morning. Staff are friendly. Would definitely stay...

I had the opportunity to stay at the hotel for two nights, and it was a great stay. First and foremost, the hotel is located in a very vibrant area of the city, close to the Bund, Yu Gardens, and Nanjing Road, which is very nice. The lobby and hallway areas were very clean & well decorated. The rooms themselves...

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
