Located along the historic Bund with spectacular views of the Bund, Huangpu River, Pudong and the historic Wai Bai Du iron bridge, The Peninsula Shanghai perfectly blends with the historic architecture of its landmark neighbours. The Peninsula Shanghai, which opened in October 2009, is the first new building to be constructed on the historic Bund in over 60 years. Offering the best of Peninsula traditions and a range of signature services and facilities, including Shanghai's largest guestrooms and the city's highest staff-to-guest ratio, The Peninsula also heralds the return of parent company, The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, to Shanghai where it owned and operated four of the city's premier hotels in the 1920s to 1940s - The Kalee, The Astor House, The Palace and The Majestic.

Spent 3 days here and I've got to say I was disappointed to say the least, I had high expectations and they didn't meet many of them. Location- met, great location. Service- missed the mark, 3 days had 4 meals and drinks at the bars and the service was lacking in each instance. Had to remind the staff several times at Breakfast to bring coffee and then again for water. To get an additional drink in the bar lounge you'd have to walk to bar to order. Food- at the breakfast buffet and the standard menu nothing exciting. Front desk- not accommodating at all, I asked for a paid upgrade to a bund view only to be told nothing was available but when checked online next morning rooms were available. Room- Room was very nice definately hit the mark. Housekeeping- exceptional, Went out of their way to wash my cloths. This was the only service experience that blew away my expectations. My biggest problem with the hotel was the lack of staff that spoke english, 3 in 10 spoke english. If you're American I can't stress enough to book an American Brand hotel, Ritz, St regis, Park Hyatt, Four seasons, Rosewood etc, you name it. Since covid the english speaking people fled the country and it was very apparent. If you speak Chinese this hotel would be a much easier fit. I would never go back because it was so difficult to communicate. This hotel is a status statement doesn't even compare to a four seasons but they do have great door openers in the lobby. concierge was excellent, spoke perfect english.

I had a fantastic stay at Peninsula following my mandatory 2 week quarantine. For a an Englishman to try to deal with all the mandatory covid requirements is was a relief when Mike Zhang and the the excellent team at the hotel literally hand held men through everything i need to do in order to be set up and able to venture safely out the hotel. This included taking me to get local SIM card, setting up the required applications on my iPhone as well as establishing the required links to my British credit cards. I” cannot thank Mike and his team enough. As for the hotel, room and food everything was expertly as expected such quality and comfort throughout the hotel and especially the customer service delivered by each of the staff members from front of house to the cleaning team. Finally the position of the hotel on the Bund was the icing on the cake!! Thank you Mike and everyone for your warm welcome and taking care of me. Best regards, Chris

As perfect as a hotel can get! It’s hard finding the perfect hotel. Often just a single interaction with staff can make or break a hotel experience. The peninsula provided us with many many pleasant memories (a special flower request fulfilled, great breakfast with combined buffet and a la carte, lovely toiletries, amazing pool/sauna/jacuzzi/dressing room, a live classical ensemble, Mozart for breakfast, a quiet elevator without a tinny background drum beat and an unbelievable bedroom view of the Bund) and only the slightest of grumbles (coffee cups for drinking tea, no scissors in the room, and no! can’t get to three grumbles as hard as I try!) We are a family with a teenager and a drifting 30 something and we wanted to see a bit of Shanghai. Being in the older age group my husband and I need a bit of rest. Thank you Shanghai Penninsula! (I can’t mention one staff name- they were all superb).

Best hotel in Shanghai. I stayed with my family over the holidays. They have the best blackout curtains of any hotel, no light peeping at all. We ended up oversleeping everyday. And very functional room, we actually used the other furniture like the office desk and sofa. Rooms were clean and modern despite not being renovated. Pretty great condition. And terrific concierge, the only ones in my entire trip that smiled. Hats off to ricci and danny. Really top notch service that beat all the other hotels we stayed at in china.

I really wanted to give this hotel 5*, but I had to remove a star because of the crowd and housekeeping. But before I get into that, I must say that the rooms are much better than the photos. I am not a fan of the decor but somehow it works. I love the room layout and they even generously gave us an upgrade. The concierge was also excellent! They arranged restaurant reservations and made a special Milo Dinosaur on Christmas Day for my 3 year old since it’s all she wanted this Christmas. The bear was also a nice touch! However, the housekeeping is always talking really loudly on the phone. The room could be cleaner and the amenities were inconsistent on all days, such as the complimentary water, tea and coffee varied in number every single day. What I can’t stand though is the crowd. First, the lobby was so busy that no one helped us with our luggage when we arrived. The help came very belatedly. The lobby is like a zoo at all hours. The line to the lobby lounge extends all the way to the elevator. There’s also a line to check-in/out. I don’t know if they like it this way, but it’s quite disruptive and it impedes the guests’ movement already. They should get some tips from Four Seasons where it’s never like a zoo despite being fully booked. Every inch of the lobby is literally packed from 8am until midnight with people posing ridiculously. We ate at Yi Ling twice. First time was excellent. Second time, they ran out of the dish we wanted, which is why we came back. Food and service were not as great so definitely won’t be going back a third time. Lastly, what annoys me most is the noise from the hallway. You can hear other guests shouting, laughing and banging doors really loudly to the point the I went to check out Capella hotel. Other than that, I really loved this hotel and service was amazing.

This is a beautiful hotel with well appointed and very thoughtfully designed rooms, and generally helpful and friendly service. However, during our stay the lobby and most of the public areas were jam packed with tourists taking selfies by the Chanel-branded Christmas trees - to the extent that we had to push past crowds to get to the elevators to our room. It felt like a wet market rather than a top ranked five star hotel. The hotel really needs to take some measures to ensure that guests’ experience is not compromised by the crowds. They might consider having separate entrances for guests and for tourists - something that many other hotels seem to have had no difficult implementing. In addition, the supposedly Michelin starred Yi Long court featured mediocre food and very coarse service (e.g. waiters serving us the next course before we had even finished the previous course)

This was the highlight stay of our vacation, a honeymoon '13 years late'. So when choosing hotels in the Bund area, we gravitated towards The Peninsula. Pre-check in enquiries via email were responded to quickly - when they learnt of our celebration - they asked for our names and said they will prepare a wedding anniversary amenity for us - I suppose this was the handwritten card and chocolates we received in the room. The check-in was quick, we were early and our room was understandably not ready yet, but they took down our contact and sent us a text once it was ready. Due to the high volume of check-ins, the front desk apologised for not being able to bring us to the room personally, but fortunately, the numerous controls in the room were easy enough to figure out on our own. Our room on the 7th floor was perfect, we had a really nice view of the Oriental Pearl, and spent a lot of time sitting and looking out the window. Housekeeping service was commendable as well, our request for amenities, foam pillows and bath salts were quickly attended to. Breakfast was delicious, however, as it was a semi-buffet service, it is better to go earlier as the service becomes really slow once the crowd comes in. One morning, we sat for half an hour just waiting for our drinks and food, not the best for tourists wanting to have a meal and quickly get on with sightseeing for the day. In-room dining - chinese food was a good meal for us. Check-out and baggage service was very efficient as well. And now it comes to our only gripe for the stay. It being the festive season, the hotel was gorgeously decorated with Christmas trees and lights. This was something we really looked forward to, until we realised it came along with crowds of non-hotel guests flooding the walkways and paths, taking endless photographs of every angle of themselves. Every afternoon and evening, we had to navigate left and right just to get to the guestroom lifts. The only time we could get peaceful walks and photographs was to head down really early. The crowds really marred the 'luxurious' experience, we do understand the hotel can't control the crowds, but perhaps they could have cordoned the area at the check-in/out counter which leads to the guestroom lifts. Afternoon tea does not take reservations even for hotel guests, unless one is prepared to spend time queuing on their vacation, we gave it a miss despite having heard good things about the Peninsula Afternoon Tea. So even though we enjoyed our room at the Peninsula, we couldn't help thinking if we could have had a better experience elsewhere for what we paid. Maybe in the future, we'd give the Peninsula a try again, but I would definitely not return during the Christmas festive season.

Dear Voyage102385, First of all, thank you for choosing The Peninsula Shanghai to celebrate your belated honeymoon and taking the time to share your experience on TripAdvisor. It is good to know that you enjoyed your stay with us. Your compliments about the room, the decoration, the housekeeping, the breakfast, the Room Service, the front desk and the baggage are much appreciated, and we will ensure your kind message is delivered to them. I am sorry to learn that the service was slow for breakfast. Regarding breakfast at The Lobby, our aim is to serve freshly prepared a la carte items instead of a buffet, and the setup of cold items displayed is meant for guests to start their breakfast with light items while waiting for their entrée to arrive. It is regrettable to learn that many guests were creeping around and that many people came for afternoon tea and to take photos that you had to endure all the hustle and bustle. I arrived in Shanghai earlier than my wife because of a business trip. My wedding anniversary is coming soon, so I booked the Peninsula Shanghai and asked for an anniversary service. Josie Chen who is a guest relation manager prepared a champagne and handwritten letters for our wedding anniversary, and it was a special experience that we have never experienced in other hotels.
