We booked a double room at Naza Place as it was advertised as a hotel. Anyway, naza being a hostel wasn't a problem. We arrived with 4 luggages and many stuff and eventhough one of the employee was looking at us when we were crossing the street to enter Naza he didn't even open the door for us! he kept...

They say you get what you pay for but this hostel didn't even meet my low expectations. To start with I found the staff super unfriendly. After checking in we were accused of having invalid visas (which was not the case!) and that we must leave China at once. We were offered little to no apology once they realised their...

We booked this place way in advance of staying there, and on arrival, my partner and I were told that as they couldn't find our booking we couldn't have a double room, but two singles. Not what we'd asked for, so after trying to explain, we eventually got a double room. The room we stayed in had a damp sewage...

This hotel has OK rooms. You can do your own laundry for 5 yuan and make use of there computers. It is near the subway station line 4 so you can go around town using the subway. Comparing to the other options in this price range it is the most central and near a subway station. Around the hotel are...

One of the first hostels in China and I booked through hostelbookers.com and I was a little bit skeptic, if the description in the internet is trustful. Yes, it was and we were happy that the pictures in the internet also didn't lie. The hostel is not so close to the center but the subway station is about 5-8 minutes...

Booked for a couple of nights as I had to extend my stay and there was little available at short notice for the weekend so I booked the Naza. Bar was closed during my stay, and the cafe/chill area was being renovated and therefore was a bit if a building site This combined with an uncomfortable bed and poor service,...

The hostel is close to the subway (Dalian Road, Line 4). The room service is ok - the staff speaks English, Wi-Fi signal is good (it's best to get a local carrier SIM-card), they come to take garbage bags and even replaced towels. Don't expect anything extraodinary in the decor of the rooms, quite plain, but single and double rooms...

The staff are friendly, but they are bad english speakers. For us, this resulted into getting wrong information more than one time. I guess they try, but they might just not get you and say something completely different. The rooms are smelly (at least in the first floor). It is a basement, and it smells like a bad one. The...

Staying in Hongkou

Neighborhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
