The PuLi Hotel is conveniently located in the heart of Shanghai, and the surrounding area is bustling. The staff, Kira and Coco, were warm and hospitable, offering to hand out small towels at check-in, and the service was impressive. A staff member helped me press the lift when I arrived at the lift, and luggage was delivered to the door of my room. Good service is often found in the details, and I was very pleased with the service at PuLi.

This was our last hotel stay in Shanghai for a long time, seeing we’re leaving China after 10 years. World class hotel with amazing facilities and exemplar service! Had a wonderful dinner and breakfast at Phenix and stayed in a clean and impressive room. The hotel is nestled in the middle of Jing An, right next to Jing An park. Wonderful view everywhere and Lovely sleek interiors. Great facilities - gym, spa, hot spring, steam/sauna and pool. Had a lovely chat with Peter the swimming coach/lifeguard - very helpful and friendly. Service at Phenix made the dining experience so amazing - thank you to all the staff for the attention to detail. You all made the experience so memorable.

The Puli Hotel UR Spa was absolutely fabulous! After long travels, this was exactly the relaxing experience I was looking for. Daisy and Zoro were so helpful. Their service was excellent! They accommodated all my needs and introduced me to the spa features. I ended up going to the dry sauna and the steam room which gave me a nice post-travel detox. Following, I went to the swimming pool. It was like heaven. Sitting poolside listening to calm music and overlooking a lush green scenery. Highly recommend!

Puli hotel has one of the best spas in Shanghai. The attention to detail and impeccable service is remarkable. Jennifer, the spa manager is very friendly and helpful and my favorite therapists are Lena and Abby, who give the best most relaxing massage and facials. A visit to Shanghai is incomplete without visiting this spa! I highly recommend trying this spa and indulge at the amazing Long Bar in the lobby with their delicious menu and afternoon tea selections.

Apparently there has been a switch of fashion within the hotel industry in the recent years. In the past, we celebrated luxuriousness, poshness, and nobility. The same emphasis on exclusivity remains, but the meaning it encapsules seems to have changed. Nowadays, increasingly sought-after is the type of exclusivity that stresses on serenity, where one can be temporarily separated from whatever chao outside and have a brief calmness in mind. This fashion is more than anywhere else prevalent in the part of the world which Shanghai belongs to. Indeed, some hotels have succeeded to some extent in nurturing this sense of sereneness. Still, none, at least for me, can be PuLi’s rivalry on this regard. It was only at PuLi that I eventually fully grasp what it means to be an urban oasis. One does not need to really step inside the hotel before starting to sense the tranquility that fills the property. Delineated by a little but disproportionally rich bamboo garden, it is as if that PuLi’s perimeter possesses some sorts of magic power that can calm people’s mind; one that filters all the noises and dirt from perhaps the most vibrant shopping district of the city outside to create a completely different horizon inside. This serenity is partially composed of naturalness, but, importantly, it is not wild though. Meticulously placed right behind the bamboo garden is a few stony poles topped by traditional Chinese stone lion sculptures. These arts are little but never trivial. They give this beautiful garden its soul, which with them now radiates more like a quiet but clean countryside Buddhist temple along a little creek where people retreat to pacify their mind. The same vibe flows into the lobby. Under its tall ceiling, one would find a spacious lobby and long bar that are arranged as if a classic teahouse encapsuled by verdancy where oriental poets would gather. Still, not a sense of tranquility is lost here thanks to the light wooden theme decorated with many but never overwhelming artistic pieces made of materials that reminds one from the pure nature. All are made more exciting by a spacious corner that the hotel specifically designates to be a reading lounge. In there one can find four huge walls all installed with almost ceiling-to-ground bookshelves, which contain, surprisingly, some quality books. The entire ground floor is a mixture of fresh nature, warmth, and sense of literate class of the very oriental nature. Its degree of delicacy is quite beyond what English word can describe because this space is capturing the beauty of the scholarly oriental world in such a full manner that it is as hard to be described as the culture itself is – formless and subtle. However, no matter of what one thing is for sure – one would experience an unimaginable level of calm within this space; not the type one would find deep inside an Austrian forest, but one that exists only in the purest oriental temple. The room in the PuLi very well inherits the air from the lovely lobby downstair. Everything inside the light wooden-themed room shows clear evidence of careful design as, wherever possible, it utilizes materials that reflect the soft nature – wood, rattan, and a little bit of light grey stone. These choices of materials, together with the room’s rightly sized spaciousness, turn the room very much into a humble bookroom of a great scholar from the old age. It is as fresh and rich as a cup of Tea of the Iron Bodhisattva. Within this environment even the air smells sharper and more righteous. Although naturalness remains a crucial element, PuLi’s room is not like those cozy, warm countryside retreats in Europe and North America. It is overflown with comfort of another sort – an eastern type; one which is defined by attentiveness, meticulousness, and self-discipline. It is a room that naturally turn everyone inside into a behaved and subtle oriental gentleman. Thus, I truly admire PuLi’s art of design: it does not only create an external environment which one enjoys; it creates a mood inside one’s mind, which in itself is absolutely orientally beautiful. Meanwhile, PuLi’s team echoes perfectly with this environment. Everyone I had the fortune to encounter at PuLi were, needless to say, exceptionally passionate to help. More specially, they all treated their guests in a beautifully soft and subtle manner, which very well captures the romance of literate China. Moreover, I particularly love PuLi’s motto – “some name it service, we call it hostmanship” and I think their team has more than enough to actualize so. When talking with the ladies and gentlemen at PuLi, one will not feel being “served”; one would instead feel being warmly and carefully hosted by a very mannered friend. This sense of being kindly welcomed by a team of fine people who possess high self-esteem and who are elegant and gentle in every of their move is, indeed, the best type of hostmanship I have ever experienced and can imagine PuLi is truly an urban oasis – an exquisitely oriental one more specifically, no matter whether it is the art of design or hostmanship being concerned. It is where one will naturally slow down her or his pace – no one want to disturb the very delicate balance of everything in this fiction-like space.
