My wife and I spent 2 nights at Papageno during a short bird watching trip to Fiji. We were attracted by favourable reports about the resort as well as the birds there. We booked through Flight Centre at Birkenhead Point, Sydney. We understand the booking was made without difficulty despite being made immediately after Covid lockdown had been lifted. We were met at the Kadavu airport by Johnny, the manager, and taken by open boat for a 40 minute scenic ride to the resort. We were fortunate that the rain held off (just) and the wind was calm. The boat ride was delightful but it would be a wise move to put clothing and the like in plastic bags inside your suitcases to add extra protection over and above the tarpaulin in the boat. We arrived at the pristine beach in front of the resort and were shown to our delightful bure. It was very comfortable with a large fan, an insect proof veranda looking onto the garden and attractive decorations and furnishing - a harmonious mix of European and Pacific influences. Flowers from the garden decorated the room and a foot bath outside the bure to wash off any sand on your feet. All lovely touches. Accommodation at Papageno includes all meals. We had no inkling of what we were to eat so our first lunch was approached with a questioning attitude. We were most pleasantly surprised an the excellence of all the food we had here. Nearly everything we ate came off the property which has extensive orchards and vegetable gardens as well as chickens. Fish is caught by staff and local villagers. One highlight was an evening meal that started with Taro leaf and coconut cream soup - never had it? The silky smooth texture, vibrant green colour and delicious flavour made it a standout. It was followed by roast chicken from the property - moist, flavoursome and tender with no fat - fantastic. Dessert was a mulberry tart , again with fruit from the orchard. Papageno is renown for its diving, which we did not have time for . We did however snorkel straight off the beach. It is a bit of a swim to get to the outer parts of the fringing reef where the fish and coral are diverse and very attractive. We did however bird watch very actively and saw some of the local endemic birds here but, as often happens when birding, missed out on the much wanted Whistling Fruit Dove! The staff had a real family feel and were enormously welcoming. They have a tradition of holding a welcoming and a fare welling Kava Ceremony which is attended by all the staff. It was most interesting and a real opportunity to get to know the locals even if the Kava was not really to our taste. All in all the most interesting and enjoyable place we stayed in Fiji. We would love to go back, especially when the Whistling Fruit Dove is around.

We had a great stay at Papageno. The resort is beautiful and laid back, and the large bure we stayed in was incredible. The food was all delicious. Of special note, however, was the kindness and care that we received. One of our party had a medical issue (and eventually had to be flown out of Fiji back to his home abroad). One of the two ladies that own and operate the resort is a nurse, and she was proactive in caring for the sick guest. I can't begin to explain the comfort she brought to that guest and our family. She is an amazing person, on top of being a top notch nurse. We'll never forget the care she provided, her humor, and her grace. Papageno is fantastic resort run by fantastic people.

What a privilege to spend 10 days at this magnificent eco-resort! We loved every aspect of this unique experience: beautiful, comfortable accommodation; delicious sumptuous meals with ingredients grown in the resort's organic garden; staff that treated us like family; exquisite gardens and surroundings; wonderful trips for snorkelling and walks to waterfalls -- all in all, a most enjoyable, relaxing and rejuvenating experience. We look forward to our next visit and would recommend this resort to anyone who longs for a remote island experience.

Bula! My girlfriend and I recently spent a week at the beautiful Papageno Resort on Kadavu and had a wonderful experience. We took full advantage of what the resort had to offer: Scuba diving, Manta Ray snorkel trip, Waterfall hike, Daku village visit and the Vunisei District School trip. Of all the activities we took part in, however, perhaps the best experience we had was our time spent with the staff. Playing pool and darts in the Tuku Tuku room, boat rides along the coast, ping-pong tournaments, volleyball matches, and the Kava ceremony - it was the people who work at Papageno who made our trip truly special. I want to thank all of the employees at Papageno, especially the kitchen who prepared 3 amazing locally-sourced meals a day, for giving us a wonderful, relaxing and culturally-immersive experience. Bula Vinaka, Papageno! We can't wait to see you again! Chris & Elle

Coming from France. We spent a wonderfull week, in July, in this resort, with our three sons. It was the Paradize! Beautifull place (beach, possibility to get canoe to visit the coast and the closest island, marvelous fishes as soon as you do snurkling, trip to see manta ray, ...), kind people who did their best for you to discover their country and played with us (volley-ball, ping-pong, snooker, ...). Thanks to Taito (for our three sons, fans of rugby, unforgettable match in his village!), to Tom, to Sivo, to Warren (for the discussions we had, about Fiji and his ecology point of view), and to all the other I couldn't write the name... I, at last ,understand why Fiji rugby players have difficulties to come back to France once they are in Fiji! Thérèse, Aubin, Antoine, Félix & Christophe.

I shared a was a very enjoyable and relaxing week at Papageno with a couple of friends visiting from Sydney. The resort's grounds are beautiful and impeccably maintained, the cabins solid, spacious and comfortable, and the staff very professional and super friendly. A holiday from emails and social media (there is internet connection, but it is expensive and was working only on and off) was a blessing, and it was a perfect opportunity to read novels, picking from the exchange library, swim, paddle and snorkel along the large white sand beach (but you have to be careful of the sting rays that are hidden in the sand at low tide). I also enjoyed the meals (all included) in particular the large bowls of mixed salad straight from the resort's organic gardens. We were lucky to snorkel with 4 large and majestic manta rays in an excursion to the Great Astrolabe Reef, a highlight of the trip.

Bula! Of all the places Frank and I have visited over the decades, without a doubt, Papageno on Kadava Island is an absolute standout. From the moment our little boat pulled up on the beach we felt the peace and tranquility. Our bure was right there on the beach and behind us 350 acres of lush, green tropical paradise. Warren and Elizabeth keep everything running smoothly. They offer snorkling, diving, boat trips to local villages and many other activities. We read all the books that we'd brought with us and more (from their well stocked library). Fresh local produce served up by Sivo, the excellent head chef, eaten around a big oak table with lots of stimulating conversation, laughs and friendships made. The peacefulness and remoteness of the place will stay with us forever. We hope to return one day. Vinaka vaka levu. Elizabeth and Frank.

We had a 3 generation family holiday this month at Papageno Resort, Kadavu Island, Fiji. The accomodation was comfortable and spacious, the food very good and the activities and excursions were marvellous. We went fishing, snorkelling, beach picnicking and swimming with the manta rays. Some of us went scuba diving. The natural environment is stunning. The staff were so helpful and kind that the children thought the family should make a home there. If you are not looking for luxury (no roads no screens) but a wonderful experience with family or friends and you love the water this is for you. We will go back.

An appreciation A visit to Papageno on Kadavu Island is more than a place to stay. Papageno is a peaceful remote eco-resort that is traditional to the indigenous Fijian culture, where guests are welcomed to relax and unwind in harmony with nature. Our family – 15 people, together with Elisabeth, the manager of Papageno, spent a year in planning and preparing for a week-long family celebration of my 80th birthday at the Papageno Resort. Our family celebrations continue to bond us. Our son writes “Thank you for being an inspirational father and guiding us through life all these years and for taking us to many places around this world and teaching us about life.” Papageno proved to be the right location for our celebrations. The tropical gardens are iconic of the remote Fijian Island and culture. The table settings were most inviting and different every day. They have a vast collection of fine bone china from Japan, England, Germany and the USA. The meals were delicious, plentiful enough to even satisfy the growing teenagers. We loved the tropical fruit selection from the on-site orchard, daily fresh salads, freshly baked coconut buns, the curried fish, the taro chips and homemade jams… just to name a few. The staff became part of our family celebration, spoiling us with their cooking, a special birthday cake, guiding us when walking and boating, playing, joking, snorkelling, swimming with Manta Rays, fishing and kayaking. Nothing was too much. The colourful Papageno staff singing “Isa Lei” at the beach farewell brought tears to many eyes. Did we like it here at Papageno? This is the fourth time we visited. Everyone wants to return for the next celebration. It is truly a rare gem that will show you friendly, warm and inviting Fijian culture. To find out more about what Papageno is offering use Google and search for my YouTube videos Hans Kosmer Papageno. Vinaka
