I am not sure if all these recent reviews stayed at the same place I did. I went with a friend for the ghost aspect. We were tickled when the room we got was room #007 but that's where it ended. First, the room we booked and the room we got were not the same. Secondly, upon walking to our room, we apparently arrived when a soccer team came (?) where (no exaggeration) there were clothes hanging from every available railing all the way to the top floor. The courtyard, the one everyone raves about was nothing like the pictures. It was overgrown, unkept, dead planters with the dead plants still in them. The fountain was drained and filthy. The room. We had a table with one chair. The actual furniture was comfortable (couch and two chairs) and the bed itself was comfy. However, upon walking in the room you could tell the headboard was off kilter and getting closer, it was screwed into the wall multiple times over and over again only to fall out from the wall and they just let it hang there not even fixing the holes from the screws in the wall - the once cute quilted headboard had to be a gem in it's past life but the screws throughout it randomly placed just was awful. The "door" to the bedroom was missing knobs rendering it useless and unattractive. These are all preventative things - they just weren't and they just didn't care. The bathroom was modern and nice. The planters outside the room were empty and served as a trashcan for guests, apparently. The elevators didn't work but one, ripped up handwritten note on the other that we saw. Handicap folks or those with walking issues beware. The stairs were not an issue for us aside from lugging belongings initially. We understood no food, no breakfast and that's ok. The "bar" was not open and seemingly only open when the owner was able to tend it (looking in the window it hadn't been used in a while and seemed like storage). There was a gentleman (tall, relatively young guy) we met upon arrival (I am sorry I didn't catch his name) but he always had a smile and was very helpful & friendly. The hotel has a good location but it needs lots of work, to start with more employees. We didn't go into this expecting the Hyatt or more, and I can certainly appreciate history and older homes. I actually love older homes, hotels, etc. but looking beyond all that - it looks like someone making money off history, a ghost story that holds no water among other things (search the internet, they all literally say the same thing, very vague). I am glad we went, I am glad to experience it and I love Mobile, AL. But I won't go back here again - it's not worth the money we paid vs. what we got. These times are frustrating where the price of everything either remains high or gets higher but the quality of what you receive is very disheartening. If you go into it paying less, you expect less (to a degree), you know? The Malaga Inn looks like it was grand once upon a time. Maybe the owner should re-invest and make it grand again. I have pictures of all that I mentioned and will try to upload after this review. PS - the courtyard from our balcony looking over into is very pretty at night (just daylight shows you all that you can't see when dark). This place just felt like it could have been so much more. I hate that. …
