This was the first time we had ever been to Gulf Shores. We stayed at Magnolia Cottage with 2 other couples. EVERYTHING about our experience there was wonderful. The cottage had 3 really nice quiet bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. There were several places at the cottage for privacy if needed (2 screened porches one of which was attached to one of the bedrooms and one was communal. The out door patio was lovely and overlooked the lake. We never used the firepit (for which we were given plenty of wood) because it was too hot but it was invitiing.

We loved the Woodside restaurant where we had breakfast (included with the cottage price for all 3 couples) each morning and also had a wonderful dinner at Foodcraft by the lodge. We also ate at restaurants in Orange Beach which were only a 10 minute drive. The pool and beach (on a HOLIDAY weekend) were delightful and NOT crowded which has been our usual experience when we have gone to Destin before.

We used the many well kept bike paths even though the complimentary bikes with the cottage were pretty old school. Next time we'll probably bring our own bikes.

We will DEFINITELY be back with our entire family!

Our second time at the Cottages. They are beautifully decorated, clean, spacious. Add in the amenities of staying here like the shuttle that goes to the beach, free bikes, free hot breakfast at Woodside, naturalist-led hikes, fire pit with a large stack of wood, 28 miles of walking/biking trails make it not only enjoyable but also a reasonable cost. You can cook in the full kitchen or over the charcoal grill, go to restaurants within 15 minutes drive or have meals/groceries delivered. There was no aspect of our stay that I would change.

What an incredible vacation at Eagle Cottages and Gulf State Park!

I am a huge supporter of state parks and the experience staying here was top notch. I have never experienced the hospitality and attention to detail that we experienced here. From the pre-arrival call, to check in day, to departure, we felt valued and cared for. The park itself is very well maintained with thoughtful additions on the trails that I rarely see at other parks.

We can't wait to return next summer!

Our goal at Eagle Cottages is to provide our guests with an elevated level of service, with careful attention to the details, that you wouldn't anticipate from a state park. I am happy to see that we succeeded and you are looking to return next summer. We'll look forward to welcoming you back! I cannot say enough good things about our recent weeklong stay at Eagle Cottages. The cottage is stunningly beautiful itself, decorated impeccably. The home is spacious, yet cozy, and even making dinner here was wonderful, as the lake views never get old. The sustainable practices were wonderful, down to the soap! The home had everything we needed along with wonderful books about local birds, the state park, Alabama and more. We had 6 bikes under the house and within seconds could be out on a trail. At every turn, we discovered something beautiful, whether it was a flower, bird or other animal. The staff are simply fantastic. Amy and Mark were very helpful before and during our trip and we arrived to wine, local beer and delicious trays of fresh fruits, veggies and cheeses! Definitely sign up for all of the tours. Robert and Craig are incredibly knowledgeable and wonderfully engaging. The additional classes about sea turtles, reptiles, meridian pathways, to name a few are well worth it. The beach was beautiful. Easy access and quiet. I’m already wondering when we can go back again. Everything about our time in Gulf Shores State Park was incredible.

And I cannot say enough thank you's for this incredible review, Siobhan! From speaking with you on the phone prior to your arrival, to your check-in and throughout your stay, it has been wonderful engaging with you and your family. I am so happy that you all had a great time while staying with us. I appreciate that you immersed yourself in the park, taking time to enjoy our guided tours, going to the various classes we offer, and exploring the park on your own. Our purpose is to be an international benchmark of sustainable and conservation practices that will keep this park thriving for generations to come, while promoting the natural beauty of our nine ecosystems. Our goal is to educate and inform visitors to Eagle Cottages and Gulf Shores as to what each of us can do to protect our parks and native habitats. You and your family are the perfect embodiment of both. I am delighted that you found us and excited that you will be returning for a future visit. I look forward to welcoming you back, when that time comes. In the interim, please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you. Take care and have a wonderful summer!

Our stay at the Eagle Cottages was wonderful. The cottages were lovely! They were spacious, and decorated beautifully. A full breakfast at the nearby restaurant is included. To beat it all though, the amenities were over the top. We have never stayed anywhere with welcome gifts as nice as given. We very much enjoyed the complementary bottles of wine, beer, water and charcuterie plate as we sat by the fire pit (which had fire starters and firewood set right out for us.) We had worked with Amy to plan our two night visit. Our group of 9 were very impressed with the way she helped us lay out our plans and made reservations for a private guided tour, and dinner later in the day. The naturalist who spent the morning with us on our tour showed us so much of what the park has done to remain sustainable as well as let us see what the park has to offer the next time we return. We did take advantage of the bicycles provided at the cottages and were thrilled with the 28 miles of safe, blacktopped bike paths. Needless to say we highly recommend this park as it was the by far the best State Park our group has ever enjoyed!

I am delighted that you all enjoyed your experience so much so, that you are all looking to return next year, despite it not being a leap year. On behalf of Amy and Robert, our naturalist, I want to thank you for taking the time to recognize them and their efforts to create a memorable stay. They take great pride in our oasis in Gulf State Park and we all enjoying when our guests embrace every aspect of it. We look forward seeing you again next year. The beds are comfortable and the pillows are supportive. The heating and plumbing works well. The staff is extremely helpful and responsive. The cottage was very clean; housekeeping was very helpful when we asked for service. Towels are good quality. Our surrounding neighbors were quiet. The park is excellent -- the ecology is unique and the park staff are very interested in maintaining it well. Most winter visitors are evidently respectful of the environment.

We can not say enough GREAT things about our stay. We were called 2 days before our check-in to see if there were any special needs like coffee creamer, keep reading.
Check-in was smooth as can be. Our cottage (Pelican) was pristine and the staff left us some goodies that was totally unexpected. A bottle of wine with a welcome note, in the fridge was a cheese tray, vegetable tray, bottles of water, soy and half & half creamer.
Like I said before, this place did not even look like it ever had guests in it. Everything was just perfect. Fire wood was provided for a nightly fire and if you ran out, all you had to do was call them and more wood was delivered. There were also 6 bikes under the cottage to ride the many trails in the state park which we did riding all the way around Lake Shelby.
In closing, our stay could have not been more PERFECT!!!!!

Our recent stay at the cottages was a most pleasant experience. Upon our arrival, we were amazed at the spacing between each cottage in addition to the size and the cleanliness of our cottage: 3 bedrooms (comfortable bed and bedding)and 3 bathrooms; a roomy family room with a roll out sofa bed complete with cable TV and a DVD player; a fully functional kitchen with cookware. If you prefer cooking outdoors, there is an outdoor grill. After preparing your meal, you can choose to eat outdoors or on the extra large wood dining table with benches. The interior walls are decorated with wainscoting, and large paned windows open to the lake. Tastefully decorated, each room included a ceiling fan and beautifully polished hardwood floors. It truly felt like a home away from home. The cabin also came with 2 bicycles, and there were additional bicycle stations located throughout the extensive trail system that allow easy access to the beach, the on-site restaurant, the pool, the wildlife center, the campground, etc. There was no shortage of activities and no need to drive unless we chose to do so. Housekeeping was most accommodating and friendly! Porches, an outdoor swing, a fire pit with Adirondack chairs created multiple options for enjoying the lake view. If you don't have your own kayaks, you can rent them, a Segway or even a paddleboard. There are piers accessible for fishing or just for enjoying the great outdoors.

I highly recommend the cottages at the Gulf State Park. You will not regret your time and money spent. We plan on making this a yearly event!

We love staying at the cottages this was our 6th time there. The cottage staff is excellent. The cottage was clean and view was wonderful. The amenities to the park and surrounding area is very nice. My only complaints was toward the end of our stay a worker working at Woodside Restaurant left us with a bad taste of having breakfast there. We had 5 guest in total which breakfast is supposed to be included free and the 1st if our stay the staff was wonderful with no complaints. Only 4 of our guest went one morning and the young girl with glasses told us we had to pay for portions of our meals and charged us for breakfast. We had been getting the same thing prior to that with no charges. I was told another day we could do carry out breakfast and we had 5 guest and the same girl only allowed 2 to go meals to be made so 3 of our guest didn't get breakfast. The last 2 days we didn't even go for breakfast because of our prior few days experience. The only other complaint is in Mockingbird MBR the bed makes and extremely loud popping noise every time you turned over like something was broke. I wish they could upgrade the bed sizes also. Other than that our stay was great. Mark was superb at check in.

Thank you, Patty, for taking the time to write a review of your stay. Whether positive or negative, we are truly dependent on our guests' comments, as they are our most useful tool when it comes to not only meeting but, rather, exceeding our guest expectations. It was so nice to welcome you back to Eagle Cottages once again. Just like you, I was looking forward to you and your guests having a wonderful experience throughout the park. I am disappointed to learn that your stay was marred by your experience with breakfast. You are correct in your statement that breakfast is included for up to six guests each morning. Each guest can select one entree and a beverage from the menu. If additional items are selected, they will be charged a la carte. I wish that I was made aware of this matter while you were still staying with us, so that I could intervene and help in any way I can. I can assure you that I will be looking further into this and sharing your comments with the restaurant manager. On behalf of the both of us, I hope that you will accept our apologies. Based on your many previous positive experiences, I hope that you will trust us enough to correct this matter and give us an opportunity to welcome you back once again. If I can be of personal assistance with making your reservation, please let me know.

We arrived late at night to a beautifully decorated cabin with a perfectly arranged welcome gift. Such an unexpected, but greatly appreciated, touch of southern hospitality. The cabin was well equipped with everything we needed to enjoy morning coffee on the balcony overlooking Lake Shelby and evening wine enjoying the lights across the water.
The staff was prompt, informative, and very attentive to our needs.
We enjoyed breakfast each morning at Woodside; the menu offers just enough variety for everyone to find something they want and condensed enough that it's done right every time.
The only issue was a couple of the beds, two of the three were terrible. Rock hard. I can say that with a smile, because everything things else more than made up for it (but when they do any improvements- that would be the only one needed).

How far is this from the beach? Does the beach have free parking?
Answer from W_Family_globetrot
Birmingham, Alabama37 contributions39 helpful votes
The beach is visible across the lake but a few minutes by bike or by tram —- not directly on the beach. The beach does not have free parking. However, you don’t need to drive to OR park at the beach because you can bike for free or you can ride the tram for free. Eagle Cottages is a Nat Geo Lodge ... they pamper you and help you appreciate the whole park. If you want to be directly on the beach, book a room at The Lodge at Gulf State Park, a Hilton Hotel. If you want a get away, have some relaxing time in nature, and to be truly pampered, stay at Eagle Cottages. Hope this helps.
