No doubt the first thing that comes to your mind is weather its a covid safe place or not? the hotel stands up to its promises of safety very well. Proper measures of safety had been taken. Went for a show-round of the property. Mr. Abhirup Poddar was quite humble to show me around the hotel and all its room categories. Must say all the rooms and suites are very spacious and probably the biggest (space wise) in the city. As soon as you enter inside the building it gives you a uniques mix of old and new feel. I was specially attracted with the old telephones that were kept in the corridors and they are in working conditions used to call reception.
This is a very good hotel. I stayed there for 5 days in December last year and had the most wonderful time. The G.E. is a 5*++. I had booked a “Pandwar Tour river cruise up the Hooghly River for 7 days and needed somewhere to stay before and after the trip and so after some research decided on the Great Eastern Hotel – being the oldest hotel in the East and justly famous for its history and position. What a choice! I just loved this hotel and cannot wait to return. Everything was perfect and I must say what sold me was the assistance and advice given pre-booking over the phone by the Head Concierge, Mr. Tathagata Chattyopadhayay (Mr. Tatha for short) who assured I would be in safe hands if I stayed at the Great Eastern. Well, I took Mr. Thata at his word and made a reservation. I flew to Kolkata (originally Calcutta) from Colombo and Mr. T. arranged for a car to pick me up at the airport (this was a good move and recommended). The Kolkata Airport is surprisingly wonderful and very easy to navigate with long moving walkways to get you to your intended destination. My driver was at hand to ferry me to the Great Eastern where I was greeted by a very superior looking Doorman and a bevy of smiling staff. No check-in at reception. Just welcome Mr. E. Let us show you your room and we will bring you a drink and you can check in there. Such a service after a relaxing flight! My room was perfect, spacious, and spotless, and it had a lovely vibe and looked down on some lovely old buildings that set the scene. On my return stay, I upgraded to a superior room, which was large and spacious and very grand. I was in heaven. I had a shower and crept into my comfy bed for a night of excellent night sleep and work refreshed ready to take on my tour. Breakfast was varied wonderful and full of good food and I was surprised when the Head Waiter approached me with a warm welcome and told me I would be pleased to know that I was sitting in the same chair as Ricking Pointing, the famous Australian cricketer did when staying at the G.E. I did have a bit of a laugh. Well, it was off to join fellow passengers on the Cruise and I was sad that I had just a short stay at this lovely hotel. My amazing cruise up the Hooghly was amazing and I returned to the Great Eastern and was welcomed back with big smiles and a warm welcome from the charming staff. I was whisked up to my “Premier King” room and what a room it was. I must say I was impressed if somewhat overwhelmed. The room is gorgeous and spacious. The Bathroom was the same and I must say, settling in was a big of a problem, as I am not used to such luxury. Still, no complaints, and I had the most lovely 4 days in recent times. The Great Eastern Hotel is truly wonderful. The staff was wonderful, well trained and considerate, the food divine & the service second to none. I also took in a Massage and Steam at the Health club, which was memorable and left me feeling refreshed and relaxed. The Masseur was kind and very good and the Health Centre had a great vibe. An hour or so here is recommended. The swimming pool looked very inviting but I did not take a dip. The Great Eastern also has many recommendations on what to do and sights to see. Top of the list is a visit to the “Marble Palace” and taking a ride on the old famous Calcutta tram, which slowly winds its way through this amazing city. Truly it is a “City of Joy” and I cannot wait to return. I had the best holiday that I can ever remember and the memory of The Great Eastern Hotel and the people that I encountered shall remain with me for the rest of my life. Kolkatta is one of the world’s underrated destinations.…
Great hospitality and a very nice experience. I stayed here for 3 nights, i checked in early morning, i was provided the room soon after my arrival. The room was big, had a view of the busy street. I appreciate the front desk personnel for taking care of all the needs on one call. The meals were good and was served with all safety and hygienic steps. To sum up, it was a nice experience and i hope to come back again soon after the situation is under control.
Being a loyalty member I get a lot of benifits in the hotel in fooding and stay. Almost stayed in all the hotel, the service , hospitality is touching and wonderful. Express room booking, check-in is offered whenever I stay there. Love the food specially the breakfast with Indian cuisine. The staffs are very friendly and takes utmost care of all the requirements.
