Great option to put you in the workaday life of Kolkata with no presence of tourists. 1940's ambience, good restaurant for a western breakfast with a great veg cutlet, a hot spot in the evening for having a drink in a non sleazy atmosphere. Rooms are basic old school, has elevator with an operator, good staff. Just what I wanted.
This is a very old and popular place at the heart of the Kolkata CBD. This is a no frills place which has been serving as a affordable and cosy watering hole for the office goers since long. The prices are within range, the liquor selection is good and they best part is they serve beer on tap which is fresh. The accompanying food choices are ok, not great but then you primarily go there for a drink after a long day at office. Also, for people who like to have a liquid lunch or a lunch meet can be here as they serve most common items from Indian and Chinese (kolkata style!) Cuisines.
Broadway is a heritage property so you get all period furniture,Marble floors,High Ceilings. The fact that they are located at the Chittatanjan Avenue & Ganesh Chandra Avenue crossing is an added advantage. They probably serve the cheapest Draught Beer on Tap in the whole of Calcutta.
Good value hotel, loved the location and staff were always happy to help, such as hailing taxis and getting us a fair price. The whole experience was made more memorable by Varma who chatted to our children and was a great help when they were ill. Room service was excellent and the food was lovely. As long as Varma still works at the hotel we will return!
On a friend's recommendation chose the Broadway for a 4 night stay. A classic hotel from another age it was the perfect spot for me, but admittedly it won't be right for everyone. The rooms clean and large, the staff helpful and friendly, the location cannot be better for exploration of the central district and old quarter. I also found the price incredibly reasonable compared to the 3&4 star hotels chosen by many foreigners. But you have to be prepared for what it is.. an aging property without many of the amenities or improvements that have come to be standard fare in hotels worldwide. This is a hotel trapped in time, where the written ledger looks unchanged for 50 years, and some of the room features likely as old. For adventurous travelers who want to experience a timeless piece of Kolkata I suggest first reading up on the Broadway and then if it seems like a good fit I would highly recommend. Safe, affordable and charming in its own way.…
