Location is definitely the best part of this hotel. Prepare to negotiate your rate. Also be wary, the staff will say it is OK to leave your bags in the room for the day as the hotel is empty. They will then threaten you and not give you your things back if you don't pay them for one more night,... More

Much to love about the Carlton hotel. Awesome location, and one 20th of the price of the Taj across the road (but 20 times the authenticity of service). Room was basic but clean and quiet. On arrival our shower didn't work properly and Raju the manager made sure the shower head was completely replaced by the next day. Despite temperamental... More

The hotel is situated right next to the taj mahal hotel. 2 min walk to the gateway of India and 1 min to the main street with exclusive shops. The room i had for one person was very smal but okay. The shared bathrooms were new and very clean but without hot water. The staf was nice and helpfull.

I have been at the Carleton Hotel for about a week now and plan to stay for another week. It has been an amazing place to stay for travelers on a budget but who still want to come back to somewhere safe and comfortable. It is right in the heart of Colaba and there is a ton of stuff to... More

We paid 1600 Rupees for a "nicer room" with fan. And I thought it was great, the shared toilets and showers was cleaned a number of times per day, so it always felt clean. The beds aren't the softest but hey, the location is great! I would absolutely stay there again if I returned to Mumbai.

This place is great me and a few friends negotiated a good price for what it is old but well kept. The staff are amazing and very polite helping us with whatever they could. The cleanliness of the shared bathroom was great (being hesitant to share at first) . The location is very central and not a too long walk... More

So it's not the Taj, but it's right behind it.Location is perfect, place is worn, but generally clean by Indian standards. I dont recommend for a first-timer in India, but it's worth what it costs. Mumbai is a pricey place, so it's an ok place to stay if you're on budget.

The Carlton Hotel is in an excellent location directly behind the Taj Palace Hotel and has heaps of charm. Our room had high ceilings, wooden shutters, a nice old wooden dresser at the window (with a carefully placed plastic outdoor chair in front of it) and that old colonial feel on a budget. BUT there were plenty of negatives: our... More

Mumbai is a beautiful wonderful city and Colaba is the down and dirty touristy part of it. Try avoiding staying here even if you are a backpacker. Fort area closer to public transport (Trains - starts at 5 rupees - avoid rush hours 7am to 11am). Price & Room If you have to stay in Colaba the Carlton Hotel is... More

Mumbai is expensive, especially around the Colaba area. This hotel is right in the heart of Colaba and for £20 a night it is great value for money. We were in one of the newly decorated rooms which was very clean and quirky with a good fan. The shared bathrooms (there's a choice of 4) are clean with a nice... More
