I stayed here for 3 nights with my family and had the best experience. Everything from food, rooms and service was perfect and to the mark. The staff is very courteous and prompt. People at the front desk (Dipika, Raghav, Ajita, Navya and team) are very helpful and go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable. The staff at the restaurant (Sahil, Thakur and specially the sous Chef Raj Kumar) will ensure you get what you need and will take care of your dietary preferences. We are vegan and we didn't have any problem during our stay. Also, the housekeeping (specially Vishal Gupta) made sure we are extremely comfortable in our rooms. Would also like to thank Mr. Abhishek Sharma (GM) for making us feel extra special. Highly recommend!

The stay at Oberoi Cecil was stellar and took us by surprise because while we did expect a fine stay, we didn’t expect the tremendous hospitality that was on offer. Each member of the staff was quick to assist us with anything and everything. Deepika and Ankita at the front desk were absolutely phenomenal at inviting guests and caring for them. Deepika even helped us out with another reservation at another property, which only goes to highlight her dedication towards hospitality. The property has lovely food and is a no brainer when selecting a stay in Shimla. Will be back soon.

One of the best hotels I have ever been to! The staff was excellent. The food was outstanding. The room was also very spacious and the hotel had many amenities too. It even had a games room with air hockey, XBOX etc. They also gave us a framed picture of us. It was somebody's birthday in the family, and they organized an excellent surprise by decorating the room and giving us cake. Highly recommended, will definitely come back.

Oberoi Cecil has almost a 140 years history that is well regarded in the Indian hospitality circles as the birthplace of Oberoi Hotels & Resorts (aka EIH Ltd). After experiencing a few of their more famous resorts and city-based properties over the years we were not very sure about what to expect at Cecil Shimla which is neither a resort nor based in a big city. We had decided to celebrate our twin son's 8th birthday here with a 3 nights stay. Our booking was done via the Amex Platinum Concierge which had a few more inclusions over the direct Oberoi rates, e.g. a possible upgrade, a bottle of wine, etc. It turned out to be rather difficult to get in touch with the management team. My emails to Abhishek Sharma, the new GM went unanswered. My calls to the front-office, if somehow connected, would mostly be answered with a "will get back soon", but no actual action happened. None of these were giving me a good feeling. Then I got in touch with their former GM and things suddenly fell in place. Aeshwarya Bapat, the F&B manager, who got in touch, was effectively running the hotel with Inder Bahadur, the rooms manager, during the transition phase. We reached Shimla from Delhi via an HPTDC bus really early in the morning. The hotel offered a pick up from the Victory Tunnel stop and then we were given a temporary room in the Cecil’s old wing for wash & change before our actual room got ready, all of it complementary. The old wing was built around a covered central courtyard, a signature of many early 20th century hotels, connected to the reception area, mostly used as a sitting lounge that also housed the hotel bar. The temporary room allotted to us was rather small, not sure if the hotel actually sold these, had windows opening toward the road, the Chaura Maidan Road. The room that was eventually assigned to us was a suite in the newer wing of the hotel. This wing was apparently built over 13 years, starting from 1984, to add more modern rooms (e.g. view rooms, suites) to the property, while maintaining the same theme as of the old wing. In my experience, it’s rather difficult to secure an upgrade to a full-fledged suite in Oberoi properties and so indeed this was an excellent gesture from Aeshwarya and the team. The new wing rooms can’t be reached from the old wing elevators and for this you need to take the stairs down from the reception to a sub-level below. On entrance, the suite had a spacious living area with a 2 seater sofa, bracketed by armchairs on each side and a teak wood centre table. The bedroom, while not separated from the living area by a door, blended seamlessly with a wooden working desk and chairs and a king-sized comfortable bed. There were a chest of drawers near the LED television, which itself was a smart TV with all the relevant OTT apps preloaded. There was a walk-in closet on one side, a speciality of Oberoi hotels, while on the other side a dark green marble-clad 3 fixture bathroom that included a tub and shower combo. The bedroom and the living area both opened to individual balconies, which were below the road level for our assigned suite room. In general, the only thing these suites seemed to lack was any reasonable views, either from the rooms or the balconies, especially considering the spectacular valley views from the rooms located on the other side of the corridor. The bathroom amenities were standard Oberoi-branded Forest Essentials that Oberoi uses everywhere, the welcome amenities were just 3 apples (surprise!) while the wine was a decent Cabernet Merlot by Chinkara, an Oberoi in-house brand. Apart from new rooms, this new wing also packed a spectacular kids club, larger than any such club I have seen in India. And a heated, covered swimming pool! Our kids would spend their whole time either at the club or at the pool and the executives there would keep them busy with activities throughout the day. Oberoi Cecil is indeed the most kids-friendly Oberoi that we have stayed till now. When we complained of the lack of view from the room, the front office moved us to a Premier Valley View room on our last day, across the corridor. So we ended up experiencing 3 different rooms at Oberoi Cecil. Although, the valley view room was not identified as a suite it would be larger than many so-called junior suites that we have stayed in before and given a choice we would choose this room any day over the suite assigned to us, simply because of spectacular views of the Hill Cart road below and the valleys and hills beyond. I understood that all these rooms were booked during the early part of our stay and hence we couldn’t be upgraded to them. The housekeeping was up to the Oberoi standards with Sunil taking care of our rooms. Review of Cartview: The other aspect where this hotel really shined was in F&B. The Cartview restaurant is their all-day diner where we had breakfast on each day. The best seats were the few next to the window with a view of the valley, but these were difficult to get during the rush hours. The breakfast spread may not have seemed much but it included all sort of items that could be made to order: the Benedicts, parathas, puris, dosas and the like. Most of these items were prepared to a high standard with proper accompaniments, e.g. sausages, grilled tomatoes & potatoes for the egg preparations. We also had dinner here on all three nights. Ujjwal would be there to answer all our questions with a smile as would be Sahil. Although, I must say that not everyone was up to the standard of these two fine gentlemen, and one day we had issues when they billed us for something we didn’t order. In spite of a few little issues, the food at Cartview was of a very high quality, especially their regional set menu, tawa trout and the teriyaki chicken that we sampled from their menu. The tomato kasundi sauce that was served with the trout was out-of-the-world. However, desserts were not clearly their strength. The hotel celebrated our twin’s birthday at the courtyard/lounge in the hotel’s old wing with cake and gifts where most of the senior staff were present along with the new GM who was kind enough to click some pictures on our behalf. Cecil had a pick-up and drop-off service to the Clarkes hotel at the end of Mall road from where it was easy to climb up the Mall road without the need to use the lift. One day when the hotel vehicle was occupied with something else, Inder offered us a complimentary ride on a different vehicle. For a hotel approaching 150 years, it speaks volumes when it is able to carry forward its legacy with such aplomb. So, my initial apprehensions were indeed misplaced. But then, the hotel scene at Shimla hasn’t changed much over the years, with the two best city hotels still managed by the Oberois, which works out very well for the luxury tour operators bringing in foreign tourists to the North Indian tourist circuit.
