We had a fabulous time at tranquillo bay and would highly recommend. Very comfortable bungalows. Good food. And we loved our guide Roger who found all kinds of birds and critters for us to see.(BTW check out his photography. He does amazing work!) We felt very welcomed by Jay, Renee and Jim. Everyone remembers your name and greets you as you come and go. A really nice vibe. Another review mentioned food was not Michelin star but good home cooking. I would agree. Appreciated the hot cookie at lunch every day! Cabins too are a great point between feeling luxurious (nice sheets, great showers) but also feel out in the jungle (a lovely porch and hammock). I felt like what I needed was there for me to use. (Roger always had snacks , beverages. The lodge had bird books, flashlights, big spray, and you could always grab a beer from the cooler. Things I am so glad I brought: Tevas, bathing suits/swim shirt , long pants, long sleeves, hat. Binoculars, camera, phone (Roger was great about getting pictures through the scope with the phone camera). Wish I had brought ankle height socks and bug repellent (though they had some out to use). It did get buggy in the morning and late afternoon. What I didn't need: dressy clothes for dinner. Oh and don't forget to do a night hike! What fun!

We spent 5 nights here and had an amazing time. The weather? I was concerned we’d be rained out after following the weather apps. The apps are wrong. During our stay we had a mix of beautiful sunshine, overcast skies, sprinkles, and rain. There was only 1 morning our plans were stalled by the weather, and that gave us a welcome rest to review our photos. While it was not bright sunshine everyday, we were still able to do everything we wanted to. Our focus was birding, nature, snorkeling & kayaking. We weren’t disappointed. The snorkeling is excellent and diverse in different areas so you see a great many plants/fish/formations/sea creatures. We took a guided kayak tour to a mangrove lagoon where Ramon showed us upside down jellyfish among other fascinating things. We ventured out one night to explore with Scott and found cool insects, a caiman, a stingray among other things. Between the bird life on the lodge property itself and the day excursions we took, we saw a great variety of fantastic birds! Our accommodations were luxurious. We enjoyed the several minute walk thru the jungle to our cabin from the main area each night, but if this is not your thing, be sure to request something closer. The owners put great attention to details resulting in a very comfortable stay. Their warm hospitality and attention shows they really care about their guests. The food was so fresh, homemade and delicious, we loved everything they served. You will also learn that sustainability is a very important consideration to the owners and their care for the environment and investing in the local community. Renee was very helpful answering all my email questions while we were int he planning stages which helped make the trip exactly what we wanted. At TBEAL you are away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist area. You can relax and observe nature at your doorstep, soaking in the sights & sounds. It is a unique location, loaded with a wide variety of wildlife and hosts ensuring your stay is the best. We loved it!

My husband and I spent three days and nights at the Tranquilo Bay eco-lodge and had the experience of a lifetime. We went birding, snorkeling, kayaking in the mangroves and paddle boarding. The co-owners have put tremendous effort into creating a paradise within paradise. The owners and staff were very friendly, warm and attentive and made us feel very welcome and at home. The naturalist guides, Ramon, Natalia and Stacy are incredibly knowledgeable, personable, and dedicated to their work. Birdwatching with them was such a treat. They recognize all the birds on the property (and know where to find them) and those flying overhead as well. One of them was on the tower at dawn and at the end of the day each day. The cabanas are lovely and very comfortable. Food is simple, healthy and delicious. We enjoyed meeting the other guests. In short, we could not have hoped for more. We really felt that we were part of an extended family when we were there. Hope to be able to go back.

The owners of Tranquilo Bay have created a fabulous eco-lodge. Their commitment to organic, sustainable practices is admirable. The meals were delicious, and truly tasted homemade. Eating with family members and guides also created a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Our activities with Natalia and Ramon were fun and informative. Both guides are knowledgeable, friendly, and speak excellent English. We treasure our memories of our “eco-adventure” at Tranquilo Bay!

Beautiful location - quiet, removed from the hubbub. Great environment overall. You truly get personal attention, The guides or family members dine with you. What a fantastic story they have! Kayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling, hiking in the forest. Birds abound. The local reefs are alive with some many creatures - just magnificent. Very comfortable cabanas. Good, home cooked food. I did not want to leave.

We cannot say enough wonderful things about the Tranquilo Bay ecolodge! We spent 5 magical, relaxing, educational and exciting days. We had a fantastic guide , Roger, who taught us about birds, animals, trees, plants and also took us snorkeling to different coral reefs and kayaking through mangroves. Our cabana had high quality bedding , a spacious bathroom, a cosy porch and a coffee maker. It faces a garden rich in colors and peaceful. The humming birds were right outside our door and we could watch them for hours. We went swimming off the dock several times a day, and also spent a day on zapatilla island where the snorkeling was great. One of the most amazing part of our stay was the genuine kindness of very staff member. They went above and beyond the call of duty and we were always amazed by their professional and warm hospitality. They love their job and it shows! Finally, the owners have achieved a real model of sustainable eco lodging, which we benefited from everyday. Put the lodge and its adventures on your bucket list !

The environment is terrific, rooms, food and services are really well done at this family built, owned and operated eco-resort. They are attentive to detail. The pace of activities is as active or as leisurely as you want. Their bird guides are very good. The water off their little pier is totally clear and much better than around the keys. The off island boat trips are comfortable. Their viewing tower is a great place to see and photograph birds. The ONLY way to get to the resort is by small boat. It has a pier to swim from but no beach. There are steps and some steep slopes and some paths that would be difficult if you had limited personal mobility. I would give it 5-stars plus.

Went down to Tranquilo Bay in Bocas Del Toro with my partner to check out the place to bring birding clients. It was a wonderful week with outstanding cabins (very well appointed), very knowledgeable and friendly staff, plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy as well as birding. Snorkelling, kayaking, beach time and hiking were all easy to arrange. It was a perfect escape and I would recommend it to any nature enthusiast who enjoys a quiet commune with nature.

We just did the four night couples retreat package at Tranquilo Bay on the recommendation of a friend and it was truly wonderful. I just scanned all the rave reviews on this site and they're accurate. We had Brenda as a guide and she's extremely knowledgeable about wildlife and the ocean. The owners put their heart and soul into this place after building it themselves some twenty plus years ago. It's set in the rain forest with a wonderful and very hard working staff who are extremely responsive and interested in the guests. What's amazing is that we had our own guide and could set the schedule. We're swimmers and we weren't expecting that we could do 3,000 to 5,000 yards a day, swimming around islands. But we also loved the nature hikes, kayaking and we both stood up on paddle boards for the first time. The bed was very comfortable and our cabin was very private. I also loved the natural feel of the place, Will always remember the homemade vanilla ice-cream and passionfruit pie. I can't think of any caveats.

The protein (chicken and fish) was thoroughly overcooked, dry, tough, chewy, unseasoned, and virtually inedible. The starches were typically undercooked. The vegetables were greasy. Whilst the ingredients changed slightly, the meals were essentially identical, and only served at the appointed times. No fresh food outside these windows. It was so bad that we spent nearly $2,000 in changed flights, hotels and restaurants just to get off the island early. It was unfortunate, as the property, accommodations, adventures, and owner’s story were very good. But until the meal plan is ENTIRELY upgraded in quality, diversity, and frequency, what looks like paradise will continue to feel like prison.

Response from Renee Kimball, Owner at Tranquilo Bay Eco Adventure Lodge
Responded 4 weeks ago
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We're delighted you enjoyed our property, accommodations, adventures, and the owner's story. However, as we told Sig onsite, we are sorry that the dining experience did not meet your expectations. At Tranquilo Bay, we are committed to providing satisfying and enjoyable meals for all our guests. We understand that food preferences can vary. In your case, we made every effort to accommodate the specific dietary requirements of two members of your group of 11. Yet, we regret that the meals did not meet everyone's preferences. Our kitchen team prepares meals as if you were dining in a friend's home, focusing on quality and home-cooked goodness. Occasionally, we have plate discrepancies with a large group at one table. We understand that this approach may not suit everyone. Tranquilo Bay may not be the right place for those who would like to order from a menu or have access to room service. We encourage all our guests to share food preferences, allergies, or any other helpful information with us before their stay so we can better cater to their needs. Our kitchen team provided incremental food when requested and adjusted dinner service to an earlier time to accommodate your group. We are dedicated to ensuring our guests are comfortable and well-taken care of. One example is how we cared for Molly's eyewear problem. We gave her a pair of readers and then collected her glasses from the domestic airline. We value your feedback and commit to using it to enhance our meal offerings and communication with future guests.  If we can be of any additional help, please contact us at owners@tranquilobay.com.

You can snorkel off the pier & see some interesting things but I dont think there’s much coral there- but maybe rays, stars, cukecumber, snails sort of things- and very interesting sponges. You can kayak to a lagoon area where there are upside down (bottom resting) jellyfish. But the best reef snorkeling was in a boat- and worth it! There is not really any “shore” or beach area to speak of off dock- it is heavy with mangroves. Hope this helps.
