My wife and I ended up hearing about this restaurant from other tourists on our last day of vacation, and we are so grateful we did. It was an adventure to find at night but so worth it! The ambience was beautiful. It is a quaint, small outdoor restaurant with rustic charm and excellent service. The menus were written on a piece of wood, and the food was as outstanding as the ocean view. When we requested dessert and found out that they had run out of dessert, the owner went in the back and whipped up some donut seeming pastry that was DELICIOUS. We want to go back just to visit this restaurant again!
The Fire Fly resort is a little slice of heaven in Bocas del Toro. There are small bungalows without A/C, a bar, large wooden deck, hammock and lounge chairs. Every evening, a very nice locally sourced meal is available. In the morning, a breakfast is included. You can hike to dramatic beach venues, or take a short boat taxi to many fun and exciting adventure opportunities including, but not limited too, spear fishing, deep sea fishing, surfing, paddle boarding etc. The main island of Bocas has a number of bars, restaurants and exciting night life activities. Water taxis can be easily found for $5 per person each way. The managers, owners and staff are great folks that truly care about their guests. You won’t be disappointed.
We stayed at the Firefly for 3 nights as part of a trip to Panama. Upon arrival we received an extremely warm welcome from the property management (Michelle and Kevin) who are impeccable hosts, always going the extra mile, made us feel welcome and provided great tips and local knowledge. We ate twice at the Firefly which was superb (Thai-Caribbean fusion) in addition to an equally great breakfast. Would definitely recommend if you're looking to stay in a well run, clean, relaxing environment with a great base for exploring the nearby islands.
The Firefly is paradise. I booked this stay as a birthday surprise for my best friend and when we arrived, we had the warmest welcome from the managers Michelle and Kevin! They gave us great recommendations too for where to visit. We stayed in Room 1 where there are breathtaking views of the ocean. And the food is just WOW. I would highly recommend the gnocchi with coconut and shrimp and the tuna tartare - all fresh ingredients too. Then, the breakfast was delicious. Coffee, smoothie and the main event (that changes every day). My favourite was the potato hash omelette! The pool was also a highlight, with views of the ocean. This really is a hidden gem on Isla Bastimentos; I cannot recommend it enough.
My husband and I just spent an idyllic weekend at the Firefly and it exceeded all our expectations. We were thrilled and pleasantly surprised by it all! Location was perfect for us. We wanted to feel like we were remote yet this was just a 5 min boat ride from Bocas town and a 5 min walk from the dock (not all paved, some rocky paths, but added to the exoticism of the locale). The island/village was authentic with locals and not backpackers which added to the authentic cultural experience upon arrival. They directed us where to go. The managers were 100% hospitable, warm, informative and great chefs -- we enjoyed the fresh food greatly. Our room #1 was amazing. Looking right out to the ocean, it was the best nights sleep I had in YEARS! We went mid July but didn't really feel any bugs. Had the fan on to sleep which kept us plenty cool and bugs at bay. I was pleased to learn that there was electricity on 24/7 because they are connected to main grid Bocas, unless there was an outage. I wasn't expecting that nor hot water - and we got both! So the room and hotel turned out to be very comfortable for being in a remote rainforest island and in fact the wifi was better than our hotel in Panama City! My husband was able to get up early work for a few hours and enjoy the rest of our amazing time exploring the island. Our highlight was seeing all the adorable red poison dart frogs around the property. I've never been to such an amazing place surrounded by so much wildlife and sea marine life. One of the coolest places in the world! Moreover every Panamanian on the islands was SO nice. I felt safe at all times. We WILL be back!…
