We couldnt have been more disappointed with our stay at The Colony. When my husband booked, the owner didnt say that they would be staying in the same building. It was actually our honeymoon and the owner and his family, including child were staying in the same space as us. My husband and I have travelled the world and this is the worst accommodation experience we have ever had. And we arent even picky! Not only were the family there, they didnt allow us to have any personal space. The owner came and joined us for pre dinner drinks and completely invaded our personal space. Not to mention he is a complete narcissist! He talked about himself the entire time. The family also joined us in the pool. Unreal! Unfortunately there were no restaurants nearby so we had no choice but to eat in. For which we were charged UK prices - completely exorbitant for Sri Lanka! Given it was our honeymoon we decided to cut our losses and return to Colombo. The owner still made us pay for the remaining night even though the whole experience and accommodation was not what we paid for. DO NOT STAY AT THIS PLACE!!! I cant warn you enough.

Unfortunately, I feel compelled to write this review owing to the misleading, insincere and quite franky rude service received by the owners Michael and Alison during our visit to the Colony. We were immensely looking forward to what had been (mis)sold as a smart residence, as per the website. Sadly, the reality involved horrendously expensive food options being offered, along with the pleasure of sharing the entire house with family and child running in and out of the pool at all hours! The entire experience represented the worst value of anywhere visited in the entire country. The level of involvement by the headstrong owners was just an added bonus. Highly recommend considering any options elsewhere. There are plenty of pleasant options in the broader area.

We were very excited to stay at The Colony for 5 days on our first trip to Sri Lanka. Considered a boutique hotel, it has 4 individually decorated rooms, a lovely veranda, fantastic pool, and wonderful beachside location. When I called to book a few days before our arrival, the owners agreed to give us a 15% discount. It all seemed great -- until the food issue came up. We arrived at dinnertime after a 7 hour drive from the int'l airport north of Colombo. We were hungry and tired and the owner, Michael, instantly began talking about the lovely dinner they were preparing. He made it sound as if he was inviting us (my husband and I) to join him and his wife for dinner. We took our luggage into our room and saw a notice on the table with meal prices -- dinner was US$25 per person. It became clear that not only weren't we being invited to join them for dinner, but that we we're going to pay $50 for a dinner we didn't even get to order! I told Michael that it was a bit pricey for us and asked him about getting local transportation to nearby restaurants -- his response was "there really isn't anywhere else." We decided to suck it up and eat that night at The Colony -- for $50 we got an appetizer of fried shrimp (I got vegetable soup because I don't eat seafood), teriyaki chicken with wild rice and steamed green beans, and a lime pudding -- drinks not included. It was okay, but we didn't really go to Sri Lanka to eat Sunday night dinner from home. The next morning we wandered 10 minutes down the road and found a half dozen cute restaurants, all with yummy local food and local prices. Throughout our stay there Michael felt the need to bring up the food issue at least daily -- telling us that 'we didn't know what we were missing' or 'didn't we want a little fruit for breakfast ($7 each)' or, when I woke up with a bit of the stomach yuckies, 'well, you choose where you eat.' Another guest staying there at the same time was very annoyed when what she got for her $25 was a plate of steamed vegetables because she's vegetarian -- this in a country of fantastic veggy curries! Although we really liked our room, location, view and pool, as well as the beach a few kilometers away with great boogy boarding waves, we just couldn't recommend this place because of the stress the food issue induced. He just didn't seem to get it, even though both us and the other guests told them that we really weren't interested in western food at western prices with a sidedish of snobiness.
