Detailed Reviews
What a lovely place on the beach with the nicest owner, it's a perfect combination. The cabins are very nice, big enough and you have two very large beds inside with a lot space. Ruan, the owner, is a very good soul, and he is doing everything for the guests. He even brings you cigarettes from town. Heartwarming and very friendly. The food was also delicious and we fell in love with the friendly little puppy dogs on the area. If you want familiar atmosphere for cheap prices, then you have to visit Ruan and his cabins on the beach. Thx for everything, ronny and katha

We are travelling by bike and planned to stay on night. The place is on the beach and the restaurant has tasty food prepared by this lovely family. Ruwan is very honest and went with us fishing and have some fun. He taught me how to use the traditional fishing net and we went on a catamaran to fish for diner. Real fun time.

Very quiet and peaceful place, spacious bungalows with cosy porches, all in the shade of beautiful palm trees. The food was very tasty, fresh fruit juices delicious. Ruwan, the owner, is very friendly, kind and helpful. Excellent place to chill out and relax.

A Peaceful place to relax and enjoy sea beach and lagoon. Ruwan's friendly service is admirable. Best barbecue, nice foods and cozy cabana gave us a nice memorable stay. Having Lagoon and beach at one place is a breathtaking view.

The eastern end of the beach is far nicer - the west is rammed full of budget guesthouses and cafes etc, some of which encroach right onto the beach. The further east you go the quieter it becomes, but the prices of accommodation also goes up. Gems was a great exception to this. The accommodation itself is nothing special - small-ish rooms with nets/fan and clean bathroom. The food is definitely very average - and I'd recommend eating somewhere else (the place immediately to the right is good and not too expensive; Little Pumpkin I think?). But overall the location makes it worth staying - and for the price I don't think there are better options.

Amateurish staff, bad (and relatively expensive) food. Breakfast ok though.
Location by the beach is nice.
Rooms are clean but very dark (a single lamp), bathroom not too nice, toilet flushing broken. By no means a "luxury cabana".
You should be able to find better value for money.

Friendliest family with 3 cute puppies, nice restaurant at the sea, private beach, good food. Best breakfast with hoppers!! but especially the location and the relaxed atmosphere is what makes this place a really nice.place to stay at.. Marakolliya beach is not overcrowded , good beach although you can't swim because of the rough waves. We definitely recommend this amazing guesthouse

Planned to spend 5 nights but stayed on for an extra 4. We loved the ambiance of this charming guesthouse run by Ruwan and his 2 adorable sisters. This is not luxe-luxe but makes up for it by their devotion and simple friendship. It was always a pleasure to take off our sandals, step into the restaurant on stilts, overlooking the beach, and relish their home-cooked food. Ruwan goes to the market daily to buy fresh produce. The guesthouse is practically on a deserted stretch of a golden beach, the silence punctuated by crashing waves.
This place is close to Mulkirigala Rock Temple, housing some magnificent reclining Buddhas dating back to the 18th century, definitely worth a visit. Ruwan can also provide nice, reliable tuk-tuk drivers to go sightseeing. We really loved this guesthouse and this family and are already planning a return visit.
