This place was what I was searching for all the time during I was 3 weeks in Sri Lanka. I Met Gaya fishing at the concrete bridge at the Lagoon. He is an intelligent 26 year old host and chef for cooking who knows how to catch fish himself. He speaks english very well and knows a lot about the lagoon there. If you need a good Guide for fishing in the lagoon, Gaya will be your man! For us he cooked fish and shrimps and crabs from the lagoon with Rice and salad. He makes fair and individual pricing for you. Just ask! We have booked another room before, so we didn't stay there, but the rooms also looked very nice!
Upon arrival, Coconut Beach Cabanas looked promising. Right on the edge of the beach, the location is beautiful and the cabanas appeared to be well maintained from the outside. We were greeted by an elderly man who spoke little English, and agreed a price of 2500 LKR for the night; which was reasonable considering it's no longer peak season. We were then shown to our room, which at first glance seemed pleasant enough. However, we soon began discovering the extent of the unkemptness. We had to request toilet roll, a bedsheet and towels as they were not in the room when we arrived. This was rectified upon speaking to the lone staff member who promptly provided us with a half-used toilet roll and two stained and apparently unwashed towels. These were placed in the bathroom at a safe distance from the ant-infested toilet; one of many large colonies we found in various areas of the room which we later attested to the uncleaned mini fridge containing the items of previous guests. The electrics had also fallen in to a state of disrepair; with one of the two plug sockets in the room left exposed and hanging from the wall; although it had apparently tried to be secured with duct tape. After carefully removing a few cockroaches from the room, we decided to try and get some sleep and leave as early as possible in the morning. This proved impossible. The bed was also unclean, covered in various bugs and also what appeared to be very athletic fleas. By this point we had had enough and decided to attempt to look for somewhere else to stay. At midnight we managed to get hold of the owner of a nearby hotel who had an available room and quickly left, both agreeing that it was the worst place either of us have ever stayed. As backpackers travelling on a budget, we're prepared to accept that we often have to stay in basic accommodation that reflects what we can afford; however, there is no excuse for the poor state this room was provided to us in. Perhaps it is the case that maintenance out of season is not carried out with as much care, but if this is true, the rooms shouldn't be offered in the first place. Furthermore, the accommodation we moved to was nothing short of fantastic, regardless of the season, so again I find it hard to justify any reason why Coconut Beach Cabanas should be so poorly presented. All in all, a very unpleasant experience, and a place which we would advise other people against visiting. …
On first impressions the cabanas look awesome right on the beach and from the outside look good.... We planned to stay 2 nights, but left after the first night, to expensive! (4,000) rupees after some haggling! And chipmunks ate through the ceiling and kept us awake most of the night. The inside is very tired the ceiling fan made a horrid noise so could not have it on, the shower is like a dripping pipe! The bedding leaves a lot to be desired... I want to say something nice about this place because the the staff a lovely and ziggy and zorro are 2 wonderfully well behaved Doberman puppies! But I can't... Found nicer place for half the price on the beach (guayana)
This place has so much potential. It is right on the beach and from the outside, the cabanas look perfect. It just needs a good manager to come in and shake the place up. The rooms need to be spruced up including new mattresses and furnishings. The food takes hours to arrive and the staff are completely incompetent.
At first i want to say, that we stayed in tangalle some time ago... November and december 2012. We loved our stay. We spend there about six nights, we were the only guests most of them. We had a non aircon cabana, but it was okay anyway. Ruwan as the staff was very nice, took us to a really nice beach. The sea at coconut beach was quite dirty because of the river...it was raining in the mountains. We also had a trip to see the turtles, but unfortuately they didn ' t come. We absolutely loved srilanka breakfast and also dinners made by the owner. We had very tasty seafood there, i have to recommend!! I would definitely come again.
