We went to Jaffna , Nagadeepa and Kites islands with family and friends including 4 kids. stayed at the hotel one day and saw all the ancient buildings. This is done by the Navy of SL. and the food is excellent. You have to take Navy boats to travel and we got to stay on the fort itself. was a wonderful experience. Not much activity for kids but interesting to know the stories behind the for Hammenhie

We stayed one night on the island Fort Hammenhiel and enjoyed it immensely for the novelty aspect of staying in a fort built by the Portuguese in 1618 and today run by the Sri Lankan Navy as a four room boutique hotel. Our room had a large bed, tea/coffee making facilities, fridge, sitting area and en-suite bathroom. The ceiling was vaulted and the floor old timber boards. The view from the windows looked through garden to the ramparts and the sea beyond. Everything worked and the wifi was strong. However, the aircon unit sounded like a plane taking off - it was so loud and the remote wouldn’t work, we ended up turning it off at the wall. The sailors work hard to keep the fort spic and span, they started sweeping up leaves at 6.30am and were a presence the day before renovating the buildings. This made the whole experience not as serene as I had expected, but it really doesn’t detract from the unique situation. We were returned to the mainland by boat for dinner and breakfast. Both meals were ready for us when we arrived in the dining hall and were just delicious. We had paid for half board and as such had a reduced menu to choose from, and we both had to choose the same dishes, but gosh it was so good - amongst the best meals that we’ve eaten since we’ve been in Sri Lanka. We visited Fort Hammenhiel to book our stay as we are self driving and I think we were offered a reduced rate of 20,000r for one night half board. A bit expensive, but we thought it was worth it. Recommended!

We took the boat from the mainland (not cheap as the price is the same irrespective of the number of passengers) and were given a tour by a Sri Lankan Navy officer. It's a place rich in history which has been turned into a charming resort. You can even stay in the cells, in prison uniform. This would be a great place for an extended family short break.

Its really an experience to visit this place. Its an island which is a 3 minute boat ride. It used to be a prison at one point. There is a 360 degree view of water and it so relaxing. The rooms are really nice and the staff was very friendly.

Wonderful to arrive at this hidden gem across the water in the dark, after a long journey from Jaffna, explore and wake up in the unique setting of the little Fort-in-the-water and then slowly to appreciate the dark histories that is only partly revealed by the official guide to this now cool oasis with sea breezes and places to reflect, without traffic or the news. Thanks to the Hotel staff and the Navy team who created this gem in 2012. The large separately run restaurant served basic staple dishes, but with lots of surprise charges and taxes added on to the total, making it unexpectedly expensive for this family group and driver staying 2 nights.
