The place was in a great location. About 3 minutes drive via Tuk Tuk to Jaffna town. The owner was friendly and helpful. He spoke good English, Sinhalese and Tamil. It had A/C in the room, with toilet and bathroom. The downside was the state of the bedroom and bathroom. It needed a good scrub with bleach. The pillows were so old they were stained and dirty. The floor was dusty. The shower was moldy (Keep your thongs on when showering). The toilet was pretty clean considering. The manager hired someone to come and clean his room, but did not send anyone up to clean the rooms upstairs. I don't think they had been cleaned properly in a long time. The place could do with a coat of paint. I would only go back if it had a thorough clean.

I stayed in the Fernando's Guesthouse for 6 month in 2010 as I was working in Jaffna. There are 5 rooms, 3 upstairs A/C, 2 downstairs. The huge upstairs master bedroom has an attached bathroom and a private balcony (one level above other rooms in quality). Other four rooms share bathrooms, one for two rooms. There are plenty of common areas including a large roof terrace (ask them to serve your dinner there). If you are into nice design, modern facilities, or perfect service this would not be a place for you. However, if you want to stay with a nice Jaffna family speaking well English and Sinhala and relish local delicacies, this could be your choice. The food is great and if you get enough of rice and curry, they know a great variety of Western dishes (burgers, mash and even pizzas that taste more like quiche). They kept the knowledge from times when Ms Fernando worked in a German development agency and Mr Fernando was mixing drinks for marines in the US Embassy.
