This feels like a welcoming home at the base of the The Cordillera Blanca Mountains, far above the rather jolting city of Huaraz. The food was perfect for us. You can take a taxi or drive a rental car. For most travelers from the US, the night bus from Lima might be more of an experience than you will appreciate with the pot holes and swerving. Even in the rainy season, we had interesting hikes with incredible views. Diana and Wayne, as well as the entire staff, were warm and helpful. The rooms are colorful. While many hiking regions feel cut off from the Indigenous culture, this was the opposite. As Wayne explained, the Indigenous communities have been living in these mountains for centuries. We are hiking in their homeland where they are still grazing their animals at 12,000 feet within the park. Although we are over 70, and were challenged by the altitude, even in Cusco, they helped us find appropriate ways to connect with the mountains, birds, and culture of the region. We thank everyone at the Lazy Dog Inn and wish them well. We hope you get a chance to visit them.…
What a great place! Everything you need and all the help you want from Taxis, hiking, horse riding to climbing peaks, all in the best and most scenic mountain location. Don't think about going anywhere else!
Me and my girlfriend did not stay at the Inn but we had the pleasure of spending a morning riding around the area with Wayne. After a warm welcome in the Inn by Maria, Wayne and his team introduced us to the horses. I've done a couple of other rides in the past but this is the first time someone has taken the time to properly introduce the horse and me, teach me how to give the horse instructions, and allow me to ride/practice riding the horse around the property before heading out. Unlike the provious rides where I felt like the horse was just doing its normal route with me on its back, this time it felt like I was riding the horse. I learned a lot in that one hour introduction from all the information Wayne provided. The drive itself is through amazing scenery and again Wayne provided a lot of interesting information about the local communities and scenery. We had een amazing time and highly recommend a Horseback ride with the Lazy Dog Inn whether you are staying at the inn or not.…
We spent nearly a week at the Lazy Dog Inn so as to get used to the altitude and fully enjoy the mountains. And we had exiting days there: 2 long and exhausting but beautiful hikes to the lagunas in the National Park close to the Lazy Dog, an excursion to the highest mountain in Peru, walks around the lodge and 2 horseback rides through the fields and the villages (excellent with the introduction from Wayne :-)). Both Diana and Wayne made us feel very much at home and we enjoyed the evening talks with them about Peru, Canada and the world. Thank you very much for everything!!! We had a great time and send our best wishes to your team that made sure that we were always provided with yummy food :-) :-)
Fantastic place to stay! A world better than anywhere in Huarez. My boyfriend and I stayed here for three nights and didn’t want to leave ! Diana has expert recommendations and did not let us down with her suggested modification to our hiking itinerary. On one of the days, we left at 4 am to hike Laguna 69 generously armed with breakfast, coffee, and a delicious sandwich for lunch. If you need any additional reason to stay beyond the beautiful views and great service, there are cute dogs, wonderful food, and a sauna that cannot be beat after a long day of hiking. 10/10 recommend . Plan your trip around it !
The Lodge is located in an amazing place and offer a lot of comfort in adition to spactecular views. The food was Amazing. Diana and Wayne were great hosts and make sure We'll have Everything we need. Great exprience and highly recommanded!!!
The quality of this Eco-lodge is impeccable, the hosts are friendly and with all the necessary information to enjoy your stay. Delicious food, specially vegetables,, fruits and herbal tea, organically growth in their garden. The location near the "cordillera Blanca", allows for day trips to visit glacier, lakes, mountains, without having to take the car for hours. Opportunities to get familiarized with horses and horse-riding.
We visited Peru in Dec 2019 and stayed at the Lazy Dog inn towards the last leg of our trip. I know it might seem strange I am writing a review of a place I visited a year ago but this place and the hosts do their absolute best to deserve a review years later as well. We had a fantastic time at the lodge during our stay, did multiple hikes around the region, horseback riding was fun, food was amazing, our cabin was very comfortable and because it was holiday time we also got to participate in the holiday dinner organized by the wonderful host Diana. After we returned home to the United States we realized one of our camera memory cards was missing. Completely heartbroken and so disappointed with ourselves we reached out to Diana and the team at Lazy Dog inn to check if we may have left it in the cabin we stayed in. At that point they responded saying they couldn’t find it. Months later to our surprise we find an email from Diana saying they had found a memory card at the back of the safe in the cabin we had stayed in. Was very touched by her gesture of remembering and reaching out. We thought we had lost all pictures of our beautiful memories in Peru but are so thankful to her and the team to have found it. The card is finally on its way to United States.. can’t wait to receive. I thought this story totally deserved to be documented, Diana and her team went out of their way to bring back our most precious memories of Peru. Kudos to them for all their support. Highly recommend staying at this lodge, this is a story we will remember forever. …
A must place to stay if you go to Huaraz! The Lazy Dog mountain lodge was our home away from home for around 5 days. We had the gorgeous mountains, hiking paths, lakes, Huascaran National Park at our feet. The lodge is located right outside the hustle of the busy city of Huaraz, so it was most convenient to go on the various places to visit, I.e. the Laguna Paron, etc. However the lodge is in a quiet and natural haven. Our room was most comfortable, spacious, with even a sky light in the bathroom. We could see the sunrise and sunset from our room which also had a large balcony to relax in the afternoons after our morning hike. There are many different types of accomodation, some large ones esp for families. The lodge is beautifully decorated, and most comfortable. We had a fabulous stay with our hosts Diane and Wayne and team, also the 2 labradors+ canelle. There are also horses on the property for people looking to do horseback riding. The lodge is an eco lodge and a good value for money as our accomodation also included an enormous healthy breakfast of fresh fruits, muesli, eggs and/or pancakes and a delicious healthy dinner which varied each night. (I will be sure to get the cookbook once Diane publishes her book!) We had a fabulous time and met some great guests there. We were really sad to leave the Lazy Dog Inn, but have ever lasting memories of our stay here! Thanks to our great hosts! …
Full disclosure, we love the LD. But, I wanted to fill in some omissions on the reviews. Most seemed written by people using it as an acclimatization stop before going to higher elevations. While it’s perfect for this, it also makes a great destination in it’s own right. We rented the Condor Suite for 5 nights. Right out the window, it had the most amazing mountain vistas both for sunset and sunrise. There are stunning trails that can be accessed from the front door or with a short taxi ride. Your choice. Long or short. Challenging or less so. The grounds are a lovely place just to hang out. Then there’s the food. Served family style, it was the among the most creative and wholesome food we’ve had at a lodge. Then you can warm yourself by the fire with your fellow travelers or enjoy their consistently good WiFi. Finally, the truly outstanding part was their dedication to their guests and community. In our extensive international travels, we have never experienced such customer service. There was nothing with which they couldn’t help you. Help with arranging bus tickets? Fresh picked herbal tea for a scratchy throat? Local tours? A local birding guide? Problems with your phone? No problem. Coupled with their commitment to the local community and sustainable tourism, this makes the LD a place that you have to visit in Peru!…
