A must place to stay if you go to Huaraz! The Lazy Dog mountain lodge was our home away from home for around 5 days. We had the gorgeous mountains, hiking paths, lakes, Huascaran National Park at our feet. The lodge is located right outside the hustle of the busy city of Huaraz, so it was most convenient to go on the various places to visit, I.e. the Laguna Paron, etc. However the lodge is in a quiet and natural haven. Our room was most comfortable, spacious, with even a sky light in the bathroom. We could see the sunrise and sunset from our room which also had a large balcony to relax in the afternoons after our morning hike. There are many different types of accomodation, some large ones esp for families. The lodge is beautifully decorated, and most comfortable. We had a fabulous stay with our hosts Diane and Wayne and team, also the 2 labradors+ canelle. There are also horses on the property for people looking to do horseback riding. The lodge is an eco lodge and a good value for money as our accomodation also included an enormous healthy breakfast of fresh fruits, muesli, eggs and/or pancakes and a delicious healthy dinner which varied each night. (I will be sure to get the cookbook once Diane publishes her book!) We had a fabulous time and met some great guests there. We were really sad to leave the Lazy Dog Inn, but have ever lasting memories of our stay here! Thanks to our great hosts!

Full disclosure, we love the LD. But, I wanted to fill in some omissions on the reviews. Most seemed written by people using it as an acclimatization stop before going to higher elevations. While it’s perfect for this, it also makes a great destination in it’s own right. We rented the Condor Suite for 5 nights. Right out the window, it had the most amazing mountain vistas both for sunset and sunrise. There are stunning trails that can be accessed from the front door or with a short taxi ride. Your choice. Long or short. Challenging or less so. The grounds are a lovely place just to hang out. Then there’s the food. Served family style, it was the among the most creative and wholesome food we’ve had at a lodge. Then you can warm yourself by the fire with your fellow travelers or enjoy their consistently good WiFi. Finally, the truly outstanding part was their dedication to their guests and community. In our extensive international travels, we have never experienced such customer service. There was nothing with which they couldn’t help you. Help with arranging bus tickets? Fresh picked herbal tea for a scratchy throat? Local tours? A local birding guide? Problems with your phone? No problem. Coupled with their commitment to the local community and sustainable tourism, this makes the LD a place that you have to visit in Peru!

Lazy Dog Inn is even more wonderful than we could have imagined. The property is absolutely stunning and tranquil, tucked up and away from the noise and hustle of Huaraz by an approximately 30-min ride. It lives up to its "eco-lodge" name with elements like on-site gardens, dry-composting toilets, and staff from the local village. It supports a women's wool and knitting cooperative. It has the support of the locals. And it's run by kind and generous folks who are crafting a life many dream about but who never actually take the plunge. Though our "splurge night" during our exploration of the Cordillera Blanca, it took us being there all of a couple hours before we shifted around our travel budget to make room for a second night because we already knew we would need it. And then we realized it wasn't as much as a splurge as we thought because the stay comes with a four-course dinner and extensive options for a hearty breakfast, plus we didn't have to pay transport costs to trailheads while there because we could access plenty of breathtaking treks by foot from Lazy Dog's front gates**. In addition, we also enjoyed a nightly sauna and cozy evenings spent by the fire in the main lodge with the various other guests who ranged from traveling couples from Europe to a father and his five kids from Lima. If any of the above components of Lazy Dog speak to you, it's absolutely worth a stay. **Their website blog has a post describing day hikes from Huaraz that is a fantastic resource regardless of whether or not you're staying at Lazy Dog.

My second time to this wonderful retreat just outside of Huaraz. A group of us stayed at the LDI in preparation for a 9 day trek in the Cordillera Huayhuash. We needed to acclimatize and get in a few hikes before our trek. The LDI treated us like royalty and provided us with everything we needed in prep for our upcoming trek. The beds, food and staff were fabulous! And we fully appreciate all the good work that Diana and Wane are doing for the local community. An excellent place to stay!
