Detailed Reviews
Cant add much to previous reviews, ideal place to stay and meet other travelers and locals, all amenities you need for a short or long stay incl. fully fitted kitchen, hot water (most of the time from solar panel) all day around. Friendly owner with excellent knowledge to answer any local related questions. Climbing wall in patio and terrace with mountain view.
It was not a problem to arrive with the night-bus from Lima at 6 in the morning, (though booking in advance in main season might be an advantage as there was a good occupancy even during off-season period). You get a key for the entrance door so it is not a problem to get back-in house even late at night.( believe me, ringing the bell at nights for half an hour in the other hotels to get in can get boring...)
Their web-site ( http://monkeywasi.com/web/ ) also gives you plenty of information about the area to plan your holiday if this is your first visit here.
One weekend we had a great BBQ party on terrace with other travelers and some locals where the owner organized our private DJ. Thanx for it Gustavo and everyone who helped out with cooking!!!!!

Monkeywasi is a special place- you instantly feel like your at home. Clean rooms, a comfortable bed with warm blankets, hot showers, a good kitchen and outdoor area- with garden, hammocks and a climbing wall. Gustavo was just amazing. Always so friendly and helpful. Great place to explore Huaraz and the surrounding mountain adventures. We would definitely recommend staying here. 5 out of 5. Loved it. Thanks Gustavo & Katherine :)

Looking at the photos on the website and on Tripadvisor I can only conclude: this hostel USED TO BE nice. Right now it is no more than past glory! It is old, smelly and very dirty. Showers with plaques of human hair on the walls for 4 days, a lot of empty shampoo bottles on the floor and bulging trash cans. The kitchen includes bad plumbing and pots and plates with mouldy rests of food. The owner was friendly, but unfortunately that does not fix any of the above problems.

I'm a mountain guide who sometimes has no place to stay in Huaraz, but every time I stay in Monkeywasi it feels like home. In contrast to the mountain, the water is hot and the beds are very soft. Shame that I sleep without company but for sure there are many people to meet, cook and hike with.

I really hate to write a "bad review" but I think the high ratings for this place are a bit misleading. We really liked the owner and the place does have good vibes and people in general, however the sinks, toilets, showers and kitchen area seemingly haven't been cleaned in months(!). We don't expect a lot out of hostels however a good wipe down (once in a while?) wouldn't hurt. Mopping is not the only form of cleaning. We also noticed that after we came back from our four day trek, the same pot of coca tea in the kitchen was sitting there with a layer of mold on top. Hmmm. We wondered whether there was at one point a good cleaner working there? I recall reading that this place was "extremely clean", however I would only consider it clean for a dude's college room dorm. Now, why did we continue staying here after our trek? Well, I got sick and lost motivation to find a new place, but mostly the temptation was that the beds were toasty and comfy and the showers were hot. If that's all you care about, stay here. There is also a climbing wall in the back!

We stayed here for a couple of nights before heading to do the Santa Cruz trek, and thought it was nice place to stay but a little far uphill if you want to go back and forth from the main part of huaraz. Was quiet though and the kitchen was well stocked!

Excellent place to base yourself from in Huaraz! I stayed here for a couple of weeks while exploring the area surrounding Huaraz...it's the kind of place which is difficult to leave! Has everything you need - wifi, kitchen, hot showers, climbing wall, great atmosphere and guests, Gustavo the fantastic owner, who has an immense amount of knowledge and contacts in the area, does everything he can to make your stay as great as possible.

Unfortunately I only had a short stay in Huaraz of two nights, but found Monkeywasi to be a perfect place to relax after hiking and biking. I arrived at 6am, and was able to check straight into a room and get some extra sleep before the owner Gustavo showed me around the town a bit. I didn't leave until 11pm on my final day and as I was out biking all day from early morning was able to keep my room until then for half the rate. Hot showers, comfortable warm beds, wifi...not much else you need!

I remember I had a hard time getting a hold of them as well. Honestly, I wrote an email but also called a few times the numbers that are on the site. Sorry, I don't have a better answer. Good luck!
