The birds of paradise in the gardens, and the experience of the guides for trips to find other birds are exceptional, but the general organisation leaves a bit to be desired. I found it very hard to communicate with Kumul Lodge when planning my trip; several emails and phone calls went unanswered. During my four day stay there were endless... More

Very good accommodations with a friendly staff willing to make your visit a success. Great birding, good food, and fun place to wander. They arranged first-class attendance to Mt. Hagen sing-sing. Sometimes electricity and/or hot water is sporadic, but this is a long way from usual infrastructure which is another reason why it is great.

Spent five nights at this fabulous spot. The lodge is built in the traditional PNG style. We were greeted by the owners at the airport and transported to the lodge. Our little cabana with I suite bathroom was comfortable. Lodge hires local staff. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Wilson, the Lodge's bird guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. Guests can... You visit this place for the sublime birdwatching. In four days, we saw King-of-Saxony BoP, Lesser BoP, Blue BoP, Superb BoP, Brown Sicklebill, Ribbontail Astrapia, Stephanie's Astrapia, glimpsed a Black Sicklebill plus lots more. In a conventional sense the place may not appeal to many people. The hotel is on a remote mountain top next to the Highland Highway adjacent... More

Here for a spare day at end of a mountaineering trip for some relaxing birding. Overall v enjoyable. Bird feeder at Lodge gives great views abd photo opps. Tagged onto an organised group and saw great birds including 4 birds of paradise spp. However I suspect my experience as a solo birder may have been less satisfactory as resident bird... More

Great place for birding with a bird feeder overlooked by a veranda and walks in the grounds. Interesting birding sites within an hour or so by road mean a good bird list is possible although you will need a local guide Supposed to be cold and wet but we had dry mild weather. Rooms are OK and electric blankets welcome.... More

I went to Kumul lodge for six days in August, 2014 with photographing Birds of Paradise as my focus. Six days is a relatively long time to spend there and I expected to have gigabytes of BoP images to bring back with me. Birds - I got good photos of only the two BoP's that come to the lodge's feeder,... More

Our visit this time was during the Sing Sing festival in Mt Hagan. The lodge was filled to capacity. The food is basic but filling the birding as good as usual with bird of paradise sightings. We stayed in a different room this trip and it was quite noisy, room 13. We lost power one night during a hard rain... More

We recently stayed at Kumul Lodge, a short drive northwest of Mt Hagen, and had a wonderful time! It is a landowner lodge, constructed entirely of local materials, and is unique in that it has feeders (with an observation deck) for close viewing/photographing of visiting birds including several Birds-of-paradise. As PNG birding is notoriously difficult, these are the best looks... More

We spent four nights there and the power went out four times. That wouldn't have been so bad except that the electric blankets are the only source of warmth at the lodge. This wouldn't have been a problem had it been sunny and warm, but unfortunately, we had rain and cold. That said, the location is the best available for... More
