Best Place to stay in Kalam. Build and operated like a home (which is a rarity in itself) offering breathtaking scenery, great food and great accommodation. Another great thing is that it is away from the main city (a 10 min drive) and is located on a hill top. It is a bit pricey but worth each penny.

I fell in love with Walnut Heights at first sight. Last year my hubby found out about the place on the internet. We were quite nervous making the booking in advance, but never regretted our decision even once. The place is a dream come true for families. The location is beautiful with amazing view of the valley. The rooms are perfect in the sense that they have everything you need plus cleanliness! Someone asked me if the toilet was clean and I replied that it was so clean our kids pooped there every day (they are known to hold it for days when away from home and the toilet is not up to their standards 😜). Loved it when our bedsheets were changed on alternate days (not common practice in guest houses)! I still remember the beautiful prints of those sheets 😃. Their lawns are lush green with colourful flowers all around. We loved having tea surrounded by natural beauty every evening! We had dinner at Walnut Heights every night. I cannot explain how clean the dining area is. I remember how at home kids felt eating there. Some cook they have!!!! You will love their delicious non spicy biryani and chicken tikka! This is what we had ordered the first night and then kids refused to opt for anything else on the menu! The owners are a very decent couple. Tje wife teaches girls from underprivileged homes. I went to have a look while she was teaching, and I was really impressed by her dedication! I wish there were more places like Walnut Heights which make visiting our northern areas more enjoyable!

Walnut Heights was a dream come true. The property was as beautiful as it had promised to be. As though gorgeous wood and stone architecture and the soothing sound of streams amidst towering green mountains weren't enough, hydrangeas, cosmos, fuschias, foxgloves, hollyhocks, roses and gladioli complemented the scene. In this enchanting setting the courtesy and hospitality of the staff was to match. We were wholeheartedly welcomed and made to feel completely at ease. Dinner was delicious. The roast chicken with potato chunks in a light gravy was positively gourmet while the barbecued trout the following night was unsurpassed. When we arrived at Walnut Heights the 14 hours it took us to get there dropped out of our consciousness as the beauty of the place, the aesthetic sense with which the interiors were embellished, the friendliness of the staff, the decor and comfort of the multiple lounges, dining areas and rooms made every second of the journey worthwhile. When we were stuck in Madyan and were completely at a loss I called the number on their website. It was Mr Khalid Sherpao, the owner, himself. Although not in town, he immediately arranged a place for us to rest and park while he sent a car to us hired at a very reasonable rate. His going out of his way to help complete strangers was as unexpected as it was needed. His gracious wife called the following day to extend their welcome while they were themselves on vacation. The experience of Kalaam is made so much more beautiful by what Mr and Mrs Sherpao have added to it. Never had such creamy, fresh walnuts as the ones that fell out of the trees at Walnut Heights and cracked open on impact with the stone patio. The sound of streams flowing through the property and around it. Books scattered throughout the house, fresh flowers in vases and embroidered wall hangings. Vintage crockery and fireplaces. Classy school rooms of the same architectural style, hosting the property's philanthropy. Breakfast in the gazebo - wood pavilion, cool breeze, rustling leaves, gladioli, cascading water. Snow covered Mount Falak Ser. Azaan in the distance. Villagers harvesting on the slopes. Cabbage and corn fields. A home opened up for others. May Allah ta'ala bless your efforts and those who work for you and may He make us all inheritors of His everlasting Paradise. Shameelah R. Balkhi.

The hotel is both pretty and in a lovely area, it is far from the town so getting anything is problematic unless you want to have a driver run you the 20 minutes down the super bumpy hill for some food (the food they have is limited and repeats of the same stuff in slightly different forms each day). Before we get to the blackmail let me mention a few other things.. the drive to this spot is not going to be less than four to six hours and on the worst bumpiest road you have ever been on.. and that is coming from someone with a high tolerance for discomfort, so just remember, you were warned, the road to this place is exhausting. The rooms main problems are that the bathrooms are horrible smelling, leaky and unclean.. The rooms smell to a degree and the sheets and blankets needed to be replaced years ago. The views if you go into the mountains are beautiful but the owner did something that completely ruined the experience for us. One day we went for a walk and I (who never drop or lose anything) accidentally dropped my passport just behind the main house. This was early in the morning.. we found out later an employee had picked it up and turned it in to the owner shortly after. Ten hours later the owner let it leak that it had been found and he knew who had it. We called him to meet us and when he arrived, he had it all along and kept being vague about where it was and kept saying if we paid more it would go better for me.. even when I directly said do you know where it is or what are you actually saying (he was being vague and indirect) he wouldn't admit he had it on his person while he and his wife kept trying to get some money out of me without specifically saying he had it. Eventually after many games on his part attempting to extort money from me he pulled it out and turned it over to me when he realized he wasn't getting a bunch of money from me. I highly recommend international travelers stay away from this place.
