Let's get the steps out of the way first - you do need to be relatively fit but its not that bad. I have COPD and apart from having to rest a couple of times (to admire the view) it wouldn't put me off returning.
We did a 3N4D package which was perfect as we never felt rushed. The package included 3 afternoon river trips and a couple of hilltop walks. We opted to forego one of the walks for an early morning river trip (well worth it) and we squeezed in a visit to the Gomantong Caves (about 30-minutes from the resort). We saw lots of wildlife (heard lots more) on the river trips but taking photos of Orangutangs from the boat proved quite difficult. The highlight for us was seeing the Pygmy Elephants on our last afternoon. Our guide Rodel was a star!
I should also mention that the rooms were clean and spacious and food delicious and freshly prepared! As there are only 4 rooms, there is no menu to choose from (having informed them of your dietary requirements prior to arrival). Beer and wine is readily available and reasonably priced.
All our transfers were arranged with Gert and everything went according to plan.
Thank you Gert and team for a fantastic few days.

Really enjoyed my one night here! I didn't have time for two nights but they managed to tailor a custom trip so i could squeeze in the jungle hike as well as an evening and morning river cruises and transfer to reach Sepilok in time for the next leg of my trip! The rooms were super clean, great water pressure in the shower (which was amazing after spending 5 days on Mabul Island).

Jason who has built and runs the place was super attentive to all the guests, he served and I think cooked the meals himself (which were fantastic) and gave 5 star restaurant service in the resort restaurant, he is a true conservationist and hosted the jungle tour himself, explaining alot about the history and background of the deforestation happening around the area as well as pointing out and providing information about the flora and fauna.

There are a few stairs but that's why you're up on the forest ridge and and not down on the river bank which is why this place is so special.

We stayed at the Last Frontier Boutique resort for two nights. The staff are exceptional and went above and beyond. Rodell was very helpful and assisted with bags and helped any way he could. Jason was very attentive and provided very generous portions of tasty and varied food. We were very impressed that all the staff knew our name on arrival and it is this bespoke approach that really sets this hotel apart. Gert drove us to our next location in Sepilok and kindly dropped our baggage to our next hotel, so we could attend the feeding time at the Orangatuns centre. We went on two boat trips and managed to see a herd of elephants grazing and a few small crocodiles.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this hotel. Although the 600 steps are manageable, be aware that some of the planks are loose and they become very slippery when wet and some of the handrails are missing.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed the 2D2N package at the Last Frontier in Bilit. It is such a special place, with just 4 bedrooms, set up high on a hill overlooking the Kintabagan river. We were able to watch a family of 3 orangutans in trees just beside the steps leading up to the lodge, and saw hornbills, monitor lizard and squirrels from the the eating area. We enjoyed 2 boat rides with Ryan as part of our trip and saw different types of monkeys including proboscis, countless birds including hornbills and a crocodile. We also enjoyed a guided walk along the ridge with far reaching views over the palm oil plantations which are encroaching on the land all around this area.

We really enjoyed talking to our hosts Gert and Jason about Sabah and found Jason's food to be very tasty, and some of the best of our trip - we particularly loved his beef curry and breakfast pancakes.
We left the bulk of our luggage in lockers at the bottom to make it easier to walk up the steps - we only ended up walking up 3 times during the trip and found this to be part of the experience! A torch was helpful for walking up at dusk after the boat trip. Rooms were simple, but comfortable with hot showers. Highly recommended!

My partner and I loved our stay at the Last Frontier. Jason and the team were so welcoming and helpful.

We found the room, bathroom and bed really comfortable. The location at the top of the stairs provides awesome views, and you are surrounded by rainforest, so you get to hear the sounds of it all the time. The real highlight for us though was the food, Jason is a chef and he does not disappoint, he made us the best meals we have had in Borneo, so thank you Jason for that.

There is a reason this place has such great reviews, if you are looking to visit the Kinabatangan River we highly recommend you stay here!

My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Last Frontier. Every aspect of the stay far exceeded any expectations we had.

Right from the initial contact with Gert and Jason (N.B. You're better off booking direct with them via their website), we could tell they are fantastic hosts, and chatting to them in the car to the rest was a brilliant introduction to life in and around the Kinabatangan River, and in Sabah generally, and by the end you feel very relaxed with them, like old friends.

The quality of the rooms is beyond belief in such a remote and isolated place. Everything was spotlessly clean and of very high quality. Bed was comfy. Shower was warm (not that I wanted it warm) and had very good pressure.

The food was great. The team are happy to adapt to dietary requirements and every meal we had was delicious and satisfying after a day out on the water or hiking through the jungle.

Rodel, the guide we had was great. Friendly and great at spotting interesting wildlife with a great knowledge of the wildlife along the Kinabatangan River. Thanks to his expert eyes we spotted so much, including several species of hornbills, Crocodiles, Proboscis monkeys and a 10 strong heard of Pygmy elephants that included 2 babies. Obviously one can't go out expecting to spot anything, they're wild animals after all and rarely stick to a timetable, but with Rodel you stand the best possible chance.

He didn't quit when we were back at the resort either, as he came running to get us when he spotted a juvenile orang utan climbing up the hill, high in the trees. In the end we were lucky enough to have two sightings; the second being as we ate breakfast the next day (though same caviat as above applies).

But I would highly recommend the last frontier resort to anyone visiting sabah with an interest in wildlife. They really are amazing and clearly genuinely care about it, or they wouldn't do what they do. It's a great place and I hope to return again one day.

My husband and I had a really nice time in the Last Frontier. The food Jason prepares is exquisite and the boat cruises are really fun. The rooms are minimalist, but very comfortable and the hotel is certainly right in the jungle. You walk up around 600 steps to get to the hotel, which as you can see is nestled on a steep hill. There is limited space available because of this but for a 2N3D stay it was good value for money and we recommend it.

For us this was perfect, definitely a 10 out of 10.
The location was stunning and great to be up high with a view. The 569 steps (we counted them) just meant that you could enjoy the amazing food with less guilt. They even have wine up there.
Being small and only 4 rooms, means that activities are less crowded which we enjoyed.
Saw some amazing wildlife and we loved the bats outside the room
Brian was a good guide and Jason and the team really looked after us. Would throughly recommend if you prefer the more personal touch.

Look no further. This is a wonderful place to stay. Jason, Gert and the team looked after us so well and ensured we had a great experience. Rooms are comfortable and clean. The environment is so peaceful after living in KL. Food is plentiful, freshly cooked and very tasty. Rodel was an excellent guide and shared his knowledge of nature, animals and birds with us. We were so lucky to see elephants. This is not guaranteed. I miss The Last Frontier and the conversations we shared.

We loved this place! Everything about our stay was perfect, starting off with the pick-up during which we got so much information and tips for the rest of our trip in Malaysia. The hosts are so nice and ready to help with anything.

The location was even more beautiful than expected and we could’ve just sat by our room or in the eating area for hours being entertained by the amazing views and wildlife.

The highlight of our stay were the river cruises, we saw so much wildlife on the first day alone and Ryan was an amazing spotter. Even the moments we didn’t see any wildlife were so memorable because of the amazing views of the rainforest.

Finally, in addition to kind staff, unique views and lots of wildlife the food here was delicious. They also have very nice vegetarian dishes which was highly appreciated.

Would definitely come here again and I recommend this place to everyone!

The place is in a very remote location and off the main grid so it wouldn’t be surprising if one they lost power or secondly he might be travelling to pick guests up like ourselves that stayed recently (we were 2 hrs away from the lodge). You will need a little patience I’m afraid. Also Jason is quite philanthropic so is often away at university conferences as they are sponsoring students doing research. He a good guy and I imagine will get back to you when he can.
