We booked a 4 night stay over Christmas and absolutely loved our time at Japamala. Our stay was during monsoon season so we knew that the weather wouldn't be the greatest and activities like diving weren't available so we planned to just relax.
Stayed here with my husband for 4 nights and my only regret is that we didn't stay longer! It is paradise , or as close as I've ever been. We had a hillside sarang and while the rooms aren't huge they're definitely adequate for two...More

I also highly recommend the private speed boat/private car option. We heard many horror stories about the ferry. The private boat and car are not cheap - I think we spent about $630 USD for 2 ppl, round trip, but it was an incredibly professional and comfortable experience. We had our hotel (Conrad) organize the car (which was cheaper than what Japamala quoted us), and Japamala arrange their speedboat. Just make sure the driver knows exactly where at the docks to meet the boat, and vice versa. Having them exchange phone #s ahead of time should be sufficient. Good luck!

Yes, you can take the the Blue Water ferry to Kampung Genting which is the first stop and the one where the staff from Japamala can pick you up from. There is no other way to Japamala except by their speedboat be it from Kg. Genting or from Mersing. But it would definitely differ in rate if they pick you up from Kg. Genting. They have these rates on their website.
I was told as well that during the periods when the sea state is bad, the Japamala speedboat cannot make its way out to Mersing but only to Kg Genting as theirs is a small speedboat.
I saw some water taxis at Kg. Genting when I made the trip out from the resort to get some provisions, not sure though if you can get those to get to the resort, but I did see villagers using the service to get to the other parts of the island. Best to check first.
The ferry service operates according to tidal timings so it's best to plan your journey well. The ferry journey out from Kg Genting to Mersing can take awhile as they will make stops at the other jetties before returning to Mersing. (Kg Genting is the first on the route.) On our way out, we were at the Tekek jetty for more than 2hrs before the ferry made its way back to Mersing. Didn't help that ferry was packed to the brim as our travel date coincided with the holidays there.
But, be warned. You'll need a lot of patience for the ferry service as well. Both at the counters and in the ferry itself. Getting the tickets was a hassle. We'd to go to many different counters for various steps of the process- one counter for paying tickets, one for registration, one to collect queue number for boarding pass and a seperate one for the actual boarding pass, and then they have two seperate counters to pay the National Park fees and Marine Park fees to enter Tioman. Don't really understand how they can't consolidate all these into one counter.
It was just as chaotic and confusing inside the ferry. One guy said it was free seating even though we had tickets with seat numbers. But when things started to get messy, they then insisted we'd to follow seat numbers. So, do plan your ferry journey well and take into consideration of the waiting time and all.
