Satao Camp is arguably one of the best locations in Africa for observing elephants from your tent. The atmosphere in the evenings with the Impala and Waterbuck sitting all around you is something quite unique and special. With only 20 tents Satao Camp is small and private. It is located away from the main congested areas of Tsavo so one can enjoy the privacy of being at one with nature. This is a true Safari Experience.

Didn’t want to leave! The room: A little bit of a walk from the main area but totally worth it! Not only were the tents fitted out to suit the environment but they had the most spectacular views over Mt Kilimanjaro. We were very lucky to have views over several days without it being clouded over and it was truly spectacular. The outdoor space had a comfortable lounge and unlike many of the other places we stayed it was really nice to sit and relax in private with comfort and a view The walk back for meals was trouble that I anticipated – there was always people waiting to escort us. We did have one head torch we used and also the torch from our phones which was handy but not essential Bathroom is made of stone and was just as spectacular as the tent. Good towels, view from the toilet and plenty of space to put your things Powerboard in room was very useful and appreciated Water in the rooms was provided in a glass bottle, so we simply poured this into our own bottles and took it where we needed to Food & Drink Small breakfast, with the hot food being cooked to order. All meals were tasty and well prepared. Set menu with a couple of different options to pick from. Able to buy drinks from the bar and take them back to your room which was most appreciated so we could sit back and enjoy the view from our room. They have a watering hole set up that animals come and drink out during the day so can sit in the restaurant/bar area and enjoy the different visitors through the day Service was amazing and always friendly Laundry Really easy to do, basket in room that you take to reception. They were proud to tell us that they hand wash which was great, however we had terrible peg marks on our tshirts that were really obvious Wifi Wifi is limited to when they have the power turned on, but even then wasn’t great. Was probably one of the worst out of all the places we stayed out Would absolutely recommend this place, the view, the accommodation, the food, the service all spectacular!

What a fantastic experience !! Our Safari guide was exceptional is knowledge was totally incredible. We stayed in a tented suite which was opposite the water hole. It had everything you could possibly require including a drinks fridge and a bath !!! The food was very good and the staff were so attentive and friendly. We felt safe and were escorted from our tented suite of an evening to the main restaurant/ bar area . The open fire pit will always hold a special place as my partner proposed to me there under the most starry sky you have ever seen. The Safari drives were incredible and we saw so many different animals , it was very exciting and was more than we had dreamed about. We will be back without a shadow of a doubt. The care and attention shown to us was second to none.

I have never stayed anywhere like this property. The service is amazing and the accommodations are so special you just have to experience it. I would go back tomorrow if I could. We heard a lion roar as we were escorted to our tent after checking in. (He was quite a ways off and cannot enter the camp.) I think I was smiling from ear to ear the entire time I was there. Food is delicious and the animal encounters are truly incredible. WOW.

First time in a Safari Camp (for want of a better expression). Wildlife galore due to the waterhole that all the huts face. Friendly, knowledgable staff, good food and WiFi (sit right at the back of the bar though, the router is clearly in the office building!). Would return. PS be careful who and how you book transport to get to the camp. Any rain, and there was even in the dry season there and you’ll need a 4x4 not a Mitsubishi van that seem to trek out from Mombassa.

Have you ever enjoyed a camp so much that you would cancel the game drives in your safari vehicle with your two guides?Well, it’s the first time it happened to us after several years of Kenyan holidays. The explanation is quite simple: located in the middle of nowhere in the huge Tsavo East National Park, Satao Camp is so very, very good in itself and with all the animals literally walking round the tents and others gathering at a waterhole a hundred yards away, there is hardly any need for a bumpy game drive when you can enjoy the wildlife over a drink from the comfort of a deckchair on the terrace of your tent. The tents in Satao are lovely, equipped with everything you would need. Ours, called Kocha, which means leopard, is the last one on the left with a perfect view of the waterhole. There is a really big double bed, a fan, a desk and a chair, an armchair and a small table, a closet, shelves with extra pillows, a fridge, lamps and even mosquito repellent is thoughtfully provided. The tent is cozily decorated in African style. Behind a wooden door there is a very spacious bathroom with two washbasins, a shower and a bathtub with a window overlooking the savannah so a bonus zebra or a baboon can be observed while you are taking your bath. The food is delicious and there is lots to choose from in the buffet and the service is impeccable. So far the description arguably might suit many quality camps throughout Kenya but what truly makes a difference is an overwhelming abundance of wildlife at close proximity. The camp is unfenced and feels safe though we did not see any armed guards. There are uncountable numbers of impalas grazing among the tents and the water hole is situated so that you can watch the never-ending parade of animals 24 hours every day. Mainly and firstly the elephants (Satao and Satao II were the famous tuskers who lived in Tsavo), hippos, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, waterbucks, buffalos. Oh, and families of guineafowl with chicks walking all around. At night we witnessed a kill. A pride of lions attacked and killed a buffalo and it happened right in front of our tent. Unexpectedly a guard appeared from nowhere to illuminate the scene with his torch. Just brilliant. Satao most definitely appears to be the camp that one must not miss while visiting Tsavo.
