#1 of 2 Specialty lodging in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Travelers' Choice
Nestled at the base of the Virunga Volcanoes, Mount Gahinga Lodge is a stunning luxury adventure lodge hidden in the southern corner of Uganda. Its rustic charm is inspired by traditional design and building techniques. Gahinga Lodge is the perfect base to go gorilla tracking, track the rare golden monkey, climb a volcano, walk through local villages and most of all to share the culture of the Batwa pygmies, the oldest inhabitants of the Central African rain forest. The lodge with its beautiful living room, sun room and terrace has fantastic views of the volcanoes and the Kisoro valley below. The luxury bandas reflect the magic of the aesthetic traditions of the Bufimbira people, with their distinct colours. Each Banda has an ensuite luxury shower room, fireplace and private porch.

Stunning Volcano views, exceptional service, extremely comfortable accommodations and delicious meals fireside under starlit skies. The most peaceful and tranquil of settings, surrounded by Uganda’s lush landscape. Highly recommend!

What a fantastic visit to this property for 3 nights. My second time visiting a Volcanoes Lodges property, and this one was equally great. The room was beautifully appointed, main lodge area was lovely with an outdoor fireplace, it's right next to the park headquarters, excellent massage, and food was delicious. Above all however, the service was just perfect. Jane who looked after us during our stay was so attentive. Every day after hiking our shoes would be cleaned (and anything else we needed cleaned), every night we'd go back to a room with the fireplace lit, hot water bottles in the bed, and so much more!

We stayed here as part of a 3 week trip driving throughout Uganda. Mt Gahinga was without a doubt my favourite part of the trip. The region is incredibly beautiful and hiking in this untouched and remote area surpassed many of my hiking experiences around the world. The accommodation was perfect - with a spacious, sumptuous suite, fantastic food and our own personal butler! Our time here was made particularly special because one of the staff Hillary very kindly took us birding around the accommodation grounds. It was was one of the most enjoyable birding experiences I have had! His knowledge and enthusiasm for birds made an afternoon walking around the grounds of the lodge really exciting. This is a great place for birdwatching and we had such a wonderful time that I hope to return!

I only spent one night here en route to Bwindi and I wish I could have stayed longer. The grounds are peaceful and you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere although there are nearby villages. My butler Barbra was amazing and I will never forget her singing wake up call. So beautiful! The food was very good and I enjoyed eating family style to meet some of the other guests. Next time I will stay longer. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

This property is amazing. We stayed in one of the VIP Bandas and the detail in construction and decor was impressive. First of all, we arrived and we were immediately introduced to our butler Gerald. The staff took our bags, while Gerald gave us an overview of the property. Then he escorted us to our Banda, gave us a cell phone so that we could call him if we needed anything from the main lodge. Our Banda was at the very back of the property, which gave us total privacy. We have views of the Virunga mountains from every room, including our shower. There were two beautiful fire places in our banda, one in the living room, and the other in our bedroom. The shower was made of smooth pumice. We also had a porch which faced the mountains. The lodge staff were extremely friendly. They took us on a hike to see old calderas in town. The food was excellent, and the chef (I forget her name) did an amazing job sharing Ugandan cuisine with us! The staff build fires for us inside the lodge and outside. One night we even dined outside so we could see the stars. It was so clear we could even see satellites zooming by. The property also came with a spa, but we were enjoying our banda so much we never made it there. The lodge is a quick 5 min walk on a private trail from the national park. We were able to go on a golden monkey trek and the Sabyinyo gorge hike. Gorilla trekking was also available, but we had already seen gorillas in Bwinidi. I would recommend this lodge to anyone looking for a mix of relaxation and outdoor/national park activities.
