I'm not sure why the other recent reviews are so negative. True some areas could do with a bit of paint, yes there are a few bugs and flying insects (welcome to Thailand). The resort location is perfect, quiet enough to sleep but not miles away for the main parties. Waking up right on the beach, looking over the ocean was perfect. The beach is super clean, the staff clean and sweep all day! The staff are so lovely, kind and attentive, you actually feel like part of the family rather than a hotel guest. If you are looking for 5 star luxary, then no this place isn't for you, however it doesn't pretend to be and definatly doesn't need to be. See you again soon.

no wifi in room, bathroom is filthy, there were blood splats over the wall and bed frame, door didn't reach the floor so there are lizards, bugs etc coming in and out, the staff don't clean the rooms for the duration of your stay so u have to empty ur own bins etc, the restaurant/cafe area is expensive and not nice, the hotel is far for the centre or haad rin and taxis in and out are expensive (also DONT go to Koh Phangan when there's no events on during the rainy season as its completely DEAD and can be isolating at times as there's nobody around- I'm sure during the summer/dry season its better but I visited in aug when there were no parties or events on and it was painfully quiet)

We stayed here for 3 nights just after the full moon party in July. We got there and saw the amazing view and the look of the accommodation from the outside and expected it to be matching on the inside. Unfortunately this was not the case, the inside of the bungalows needed lots of DIY doing to them and were filthy. There was holes in the doors, floor for the shower, netting, leaking taps, stains up the walls. The blankets for bedding are just big towels, 4 of our party didn’t even get them and even though they was told multiple times we had to help ourselves to them before bed or go with out. When we complained about the cleanliness we was assured the cleaners would be sent back out but nothing ever took place. Over all in just 1 villa we scared away 2 cockroaches, 2 spiders and a lizard. There was quite a few of us so we had the chance to look in 4 bungalows and the standard was bad in all on them. This is a shame because the location is beautiful, the pool is amazing (though needs more sun beds) and the food in the restaurant is lovely!

I love Koh Phangan and find myself coming back year after year, and each trip the bulk of my time is spent in Mac's Bay Resort. let's get a few things explained about this place: 1) This is not a luxury resort. 2) The place is quite old, one of the first on the island. 3) Yes, it does need a facelift and if you want to notice little issues here and there you will find many. 4) The Rooms are Basic with all needs for a tourist: Aircon, Strong clean beds, clean small bathrooms, and cupboards. 5) Most staff don't speak good English. So is the case with most locals on the island. Now that we have all of this out of the way let me tell you why me, my friends and everybody who has been there with me absolutely loves the place: 1) It's a family business and they treat the guests like a member of the family. If your toilet has an issue they will fix it or simply change your room. If your sheets have issues they will change them and so on. If you have any complaints they will do their best to sort it out. I witnessed an Australian couple who lost their bank card and stayed there for 2 weeks till they sorted a new one and were never bothered once about the bill, even they were impressed. 2) The Beachfront is an amazing view to wake up too. Koh Phangan is famous for its shallow shores which allow you to walk in for meters with water not going upper than your knee. So, those complaining about not being able to swim in the ocean need to do a bit of homework about the geography of the place. 3) The Place has a nice clean temperature controlled pool just by the beach which you can relax at or have a swim in. Remember to ask the staff for beach towels. 4) The food there is prepared by sweet old Thai ladies. Naturally, they will do an amazing job with local dishes and a more than decent one with other types. Great Value for money. 5) The resort is located on the beachfront of the tropical Island and behind it is tropical jungles. there will be bugs and other creatures anywhere you go. I had a friendly lizard living in my shower in another luxury resort. So if you hate little harmless creatures then the island is not meant for you. When you see any please tell your hotel staff and they will take care of it. 6) This place gives you great value for your money. It treats you much better than most other places on the island and the people working there are salt of the earth. 7) The resort is located in the village of Baan Tai which is central and if you rent a scooter its the best place to go anywhere on the island. Go there, have an open mind and have an amazing time like me and many people I know did time after time.
