I had a great experience with Mel at the Hostel. The Hostel was great, very clean, very organize, and Mel (owner) was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about where to go, what to do, and how best to get there. I will definitely stay with them again at the Roatan Backpackers Hostel on my next visit to Roatan. Thanks Mel!

Belkis, Trisha, and Mel were all very accomodating for my stay, and took care of things quickly when needed, including repairing my toilet and helping with logistics. I unknowingly arrived in low season, and was surprised to find the cafe closed, but it all worked out with the great comedor and a barbacoa stand up the street from the supermarket 5 minutes away. I then discovered the Bialetti in the kitchen for my morning coffee. I originally had booked a dorm, but upgraded to a private and am so glad I did. It was tucked in the back corner away from the road/kitchen/dorm, where it was much quieter and I slept great. The pool and hammocks were fantastic for late afternoon relaxing after mornings of snorkeling or diving. I really enjoyed staying in Sandy Bay with the locals vs West End with the tourists, and loved taking the buscitos for $1 each way to West End for my dive classes/snorkeling. Can’t wait to see what Mel has in store for the future and hope to make it back someday to check out Guanaja.

Great hostel that was a lot better than expected. Just stayed for one night so didn't meet a ton a ton of people but the atmosphere was social. There are plenty of common areas for people to congregate and the pool area is nice. The owner Mel is awesome and has really good advice about the island!

Absolutely the best place to stay on Roatan. The small friendly hostel, which has plenty of private en suite rooms as well as sharing ones, nestles in a garden of luxuriant tropical vegetation. A coconut tree with coconuts was just outside my room! The room itself was spotlessly clean and comfortable with a balcony, where I could enjoy a morning coffee while looking down on the pool and the riot of flowers. The location is excellent, quiet and peaceful, just a few minutes walk from a couple of beaches with good snorkeling and 15 minutes by shared taxi to the tourist hotspot of West End. There's a big supermarket 3 mins walk away and several nice places to eat nearby. The home cooking at Samona's was delicious and a fraction of the price of the more upmarket restaurants. The botanical gardens are just up the road. Don't miss them. Mel, the owner and her assistant, Nikki, couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. I dream of a return one day!

The staff at Roatan backpackers (Mel and Nicky especially) were super friendly and welcoming. Our stay here was super easy and enjoyable thanks to them both. We especially liked the information sent to us via email about different parts of Roatan and things to do whilst there. We rented a scooter one day and used the info emailed loads. Our double room was clean, secure, well equipped with a fan, desk and clothes storage. Bathroom was cleaned often and was better than most hostels we’d used during our trip. The kitchen was kept pretty clean during our stay. There was lots of emphasis on cleaning up after yourself which I liked. Not lots of room it’s more of a one/two person at a time kitchen but it worked perfectly fine for us. Super handy that there’s a big supermarket nearby. Also wonderful snorkelling nearby too which we were really pleased with. Pool was a nice bonus cooling off after a hot day! Thank you for a nice stay!

Loved the mix of people that we met, families, younger travelers and people in their 60’s like us. The foliage and flowering greenery that surrounds the pool and common areas provide a welcoming oasis when returning from the day’s adventure. The hostel is in close proximity to a good grocery store and several restaurants. One can easily access inexpensive public transport at the end of the lane or rent a scooter at the hostel. The ocean is a 10 mi. walk. Mel is on-site and is an easily accessible resource for ideas on where to go and how to get there. My travel companion had stayed at the hostel previously and we would both return again.

Convenient location. Great pool! Breakfast and dinner offered at reasonable rates. Community kitchen and library. This was a great find! Suggest an upper room for sea breeze. Host can arrange transportation and activities. Don’t miss out!

Fantastic stay and great value! Just returned from a 5 week stay as volunteer and guest at the Roatan Backpackers Hostel in Sandy Bay. Such a great experience in a beautiful setting. Great location with several activities all around. Mel the owner is so kind, available and helpful with all the questions asked. The staff and volunteers also help complete greatly to make it a great stay for the guests. A diversified clientele of all ages from all around the world, such a lovely garden and peaceful environment, cant wait to return next week for more. A great experience.

This was my second time visiting the hostel, and was there for a week this time. I stayed in the two bedroom apartment (same as last time). There was a mini fridge with freezer which was the perfect size as the major grocery store is one block away. There is a two-burner hot plate stove and bare necessities for pots and pans. There is also hot water in the apartment, although the hot and cold handles are opposite to what I am used to - hot on right. The air conditioning kept things cool. It is within walking distance to Sandy Bay beach and local eateries that make excellent baleadas that are very inexpensive. It is also within walking distance to Sandy Bay Divers. It is convenient to walk to the end of the street to catch a bus for $1 US to West End. Wifi was sketchy at times, but for $8 US, you can get a sim card and 12gig of data that lasts for one week. Top-up of data is $4/week. Mel directed me where to walk locally to purchase this. The atmosphere is excellent, with guests from all over the world. Mel was a great host, and very knowledgeable of the Island. Overall, I had an excellent stay!
