My wife and me stayed in the hotel for 6 nights. Hotel was clean, the staff was friendly, and the food was very good. Hotel offers a lot of walking paths along the sea. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, we felt very safe. Everyone in the hotel was wearing masks and there was enough space between the tables in the dining room so we didn’t meet the guests any closer.

This modern hotel is set in Plava Laguna, a huge landscaped holiday resort with lagoons about 7k from Porec. A small road train with 4/5 carriages runs frequently into Porec (cost 20 kuna one way). although we preferred the water bus service only 5 minutes away from the hotel (cost 40 kuna return). a good small supermarket is 5 minutes away. There are a few restaurants in the resort. On arrival at the hotel we were not shown to our room but had to haul our own heavy suitcases to the room and sort out the aircon, TV. Room: Lovely spacious room and comfortable bed, good quality linen. BUT - like others, we booked through Jet2 and at the time of booking did not have the option of a sea view room (booked garden view) and were told we could upgrade when we arrived. We were actually allocated an 'inland' view and it wasn't possible to upgrade on our arrival. Very disappointing. We complained about our room (129) because of a very dismal north facing balcony with a view of a flat roof above the kitchen with noisy air vents from the hotel service area, and only a view of tree tops beyond. Early mornings were noisy (trolleys, sound of crockery, lorries reversing bleeps etc). After a few days we complained again and were shown another room overlooking another flat roof and another block beyond with no walk-in shower, just a shower over a very high bath, which we could not manage because of mobility issues. After another day or so we were offered another room - again this was unsuitable - another flat roof with worn strips of astro-turf, and again overlooked by opposite rooms. We called it quits after that as it was too unsettling waiting for a room with an acceptable balcony view that might never materialise. Thanks to Ivan, a young manager who tried to help us Pool areas: very good, and afraid to say after a few days of not being able to get a sunbed we joined in with the practice of leaving our towels on before breakfast (but only if we intended to use the sunbeds immediately afterwards). The pool area is advertised as closing at 7pm, but often from 6pm onwards pool staff were clearing up, making a noise moving sunbeds back into position. Not very relaxing for those of us who wanted to stay until 7pm. Beach: if you like a beach holiday this place is not for you. A few very small pebble beaches, otherwise crazy paving strips with railings to get into the sea, and very few sunbeds. Buffet food: was ok but rather monotonous. As others have said, many people got there early and bagged all the best tables. We preferred to eat later, usually by 8pm, by which time many tables were not cleared for a 2nd sitting, and the staff rather elusive at times, and not very friendly or happy-looking. The food was often luke-warm and not replenished, and by 8.30 staff were busy clearing the tables around us as they became empty or others helping themselves to plates of food. Not very relaxing - indeed quite irritating. We were in the habit of ordering a bottle of wine (house wine 135 kuna) plus 2 glasses of fresh tap water (perfectly safe to drink). On one occasion our waiter told us that we could not have tap water (by order of the restaurant manager) as he would rather clients pay for bottled water. This was unacceptable, and after we complained we were 'allowed' to have tap water! We choose to pay to eat at a local restaurant (Villa Romana) on three nights where we got excellent friendly service and great food Maid service: was excellent! Thank you to Nadija who was spot on, very hard-working and our room was kept to a very high standard indeed. Reception staff: were friendly and attentive, despite not being able to offer us a better room. Entertainment - the odd duet/singer, otherwise a pianist - quite good, but evenings were not at all lively, with many people sitting playing cards for want of anything more engaging. Drinks service in the outside lounge was sporadic. The evenings were getting chilly and we had to specifically ask for the outside heaters to be lit. Not very welcoming. Drinks were very expensive - maybe a 'Happy Hour' could be introduced? However, all in all it was a good holiday and we enjoyed wonderful trips out to various places of interest. Istria is very pretty and roads are excellent if you you are thinking of hiring a car (390 kuna/day with all insurance). However I would not return. Last year we went to southern Croatia (Podgora) which we enjoyed more - livelier, friendlier, not as corporate and they were happy to offer us a sea view room!

Response from Plavalaguna1, General Manager at Hotel Parentium Plava Laguna

Dear 844Dick, Thank you very much for choosing our hotel and writing us such a detailed review. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and the trips around the Istria. We would like to inform you that when we have the possibility we are always giving a better room category. Unfortunately, at that time we had all the rooms with the see view already booked. The comments of our guests are always useful to improve our service. We would like to invite you for another visit in one of our sea view rooms. With best regards from sunny Poreč, Ana Budimir, Hotel Manager.

As I have given an excellent score for this hotel, I shall explain the heading. When I booked this holiday (with Jet2), they were showing no sea view rooms available, so I paid a supplement and booked a garden view, which was shown on my documents. At check in, I asked if there were any sea view rooms available for upgrade and was told there were not. I then said ‘oh well, at least I have a garden view’ - which was also noted on the voucher I handed over. Imagine my surprise to arrive at my first floor room only to see nothing but a wall in front of me! A cream wall, with (high) trees visible above, but had I stood on a box, that is still all I would have seen - definitely no garden. Assuming that a mistake had been made, we returned to reception where I was told that it shows as a garden view in the system! Had the receptionist said words to the effect of ‘sorry, it was a mistake’ I would not be posting this warning. I was then provided with keys to 2 other rooms to check out - a top floor suite without a garden view (over a roof and facing opposite building) or the room we had no trouble selecting - with a lovely view over the gardens and marina. I appreciate that if you are people who are likely to be out of your room all day this may be of no consequence to you - the rooms are all very nice after all - but if you are like us and enjoy balcony time with a good view, then beware. The whole check in process was pleasant enough however, and the ladies on reception wanted us to be satisfied. Lots of the good things about this hotel have been covered, so I will just add that we were delighted with its location and the neatly mowed lawns studded with tall pine trees leading down to the marina and water’s edge. We don’t sit in the sun, but each time we walked by, there appeared to be many loungers available in good locations. This was late September. To say that the dress code in the buffet is casual is an understatement. Unless it’s what you enjoy, you can definitely leave those smart clothes at home. On the subject of the buffet, we did hear some fellow Brits moaning about it, but really, for a buffet, with the exception of desserts, I thought it was pretty good. Some hot food could only be classified as warm, but that’s not unusual for buffets. A wide range of meats (with a roast carved to order) and fish were available and a good selection of vegetables, both salad and cooked. I was impressed by the fact that cooked broccoli, peppers etc were not over cooked, and so I could overlook the temperature. Probably the biggest let down was the breakfast coffee which we did not like at all. Thankfully we had brought a travel kettle, coffee and a filter cone with us ‘just in case’ and it was put to good use. I have read criticism of the hard working staff on these boards and all I found was that a smile was always returned! It is not cruise ship ‘fawning’ but the service is pretty efficient and attendants pleasant and that is all that is required in my book. I am writing this on our last full day and we have very much enjoyed this hotel and thought it provided a good experience and excellent value, once the room ‘situation’ had been sorted out.
