This place is amazing! It was exactly what my wife and I needed after the mayhem of West Street. Here there is nothing but the beauty of the Yangshuo countryside. The rooftop deck has an amazing view for the sunset, not to mention the billions and billions of stars on display! They have bikes you can borrow and scooters to rent. There aren't any TV's but there is a hammock with a lovely wind-chime nearby. We actually purchased a similar wind-chime to hang in our own home upon return. The food was delicious with a number of local dishes that we hadn't had before including fresh local bamboo that was exceptional. I would highly recommend this place.

The walls of our room were full of mold and it had a very strong smell which made it hard for us to breath. The owner of the place moved us to another room without charging extra fee, however the other room was also full of mold. The rooms are extremely spartan and do not look like the rooms in the pictures. The hotel is also far away from the center of Yangshuo which may seem nice to some people since it's an escape from all the hassle of the city, but just keep in mind that it costs 50 RMB to go to the city center from the hotel and there are no nearby shops so you'll have to eat at the hotel 3 times a day. Each meal costs 80 RMB which is a very high price in Chinese standards. In addition, there is no reception at the hotel and the guy who is supposed to do the job of a receptionist is just never there and we had to search for him for more than an hour. The one good thing about this place is the great view from the rooftop, truly unspoiled nature and it looks great just like in the pictures.

My rating is because Zen Box is unforgettable. The setting is truly beautiful and peaceful compared to the touristy main town of Yangshuo. To be able to have breakfast and dinner on the terrace in the early morning and evenings while viewing the most incredible karst mountains is a once in a lifetime experience. Not only that, but to be able to bike and walk around the local village and meet local people is something special. The Zen Box is family run with all that entails. The current manager and his family are wonderful people who will do anything they can to help. They do need to use phone software for translation but I did not find this to be a significant barrier with just a little patience. As a solo traveller, I stayed in a tatami room which had a single futon style mattress and a small table and seat The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Wifi worked well. The bathroom is shared and situated on the ground floor below the rooms. I found this to be a bit problematic at night but others may not have the same issue. There are other types of rooms and also a separate dwelling which is suitable for couples and families. These rooms are probably more comfortable than the tatami rooms if you can afford it. Breakfast at 35 CNY or about $7 AUD was good value and simple but fresh and healthy. There was a choice of chinese style breakfast or continental style with pancake, omelette, fruit and juice. I had dinner on 2 occasions, both delicious, at 75 CNY or about $15 AUD. The manager can arrange for a couple of very nice trustworthy local men to drive guests into town or for sightseeing. I found their prices to be very reasonable and fair (eg. 50 CNY/ $10 AUD for a return trip into town with the driver also waiting an hour for me to do errands). Based on a very unpleasant personal experience of "transport operators" in Yangshuo, I'd highly recommend that guests arrange transport with the manager at least for their initial transport from Yangshuo township to Zen Box, if not all transport. There is no such thing as registered meter taxis in Yangshuo, although some people drive around in what look like taxis. I'd certainly stay here again, given the opportunity but I would try to book the standard double bed room or the suite with internal bathroom. Recommended.

First I have to say that the people are really trying the best. Although there is a big gap to be great. The location is really nice. Nestled in a small valley with a great view. So, we have booked two nights and arrived late. The next day afternoon they told us we need to change the room as the one we stayed one night was basically not the one we have booked. So we packed our stuff but 1 hour later they told us we can stay. Reason for that was that our booked room was taken and the guest stayed wanted to stay one more night. Fine but to send arriving guests into a room but knowing the have to move the next day is unprofessional. And it's not a hotel. The charge hotel prices but you have to be aware to arrive at a modern community style accommodation. Which is fine if you tell your guests. For us it was not what we were looking for at this trip. Having a breakfast (which was ok but really really small - 1 egg and 2 small pancakes) and be forced to talk to the rest of the guests as the breakfast is served for all guests at the same time is kind of annoying. And the pictures are great but reality is still nice but not that amazing as on the pictures. They are really helpful and trying hard but lacking professionalism. Also to occupy the roof terrace the whole time and didn't allow other guests to really make use of it makes the whole thing not great.
