We stayed here for 5 nights to explore the area and a few days away from Shanghai. It is a beautiful place, the hotel is set overlooking the Yulong river, breakfast is taken sat outside with the most stunning views. We attend in the new cabin and this is very comfortable, very spacious, lovely bathroom, powerful shower, hot water all the time. Food here is excellent; we ate from the Chinese menu and there is a lot of choice, the food very fresh, very well presented and very tasty. The staff are extremely helpful. We booked a couple of trips out through the hotel and booked a driver with them too, this worked very well with no problems at all. We also rented bikes and cycled along the river one day; this is a fun thing to do and a good way to explore the local area, very easy cycling. I can not recommend this place enough - go, you will not be disappointed.

A very relaxing place to stay with great food (Chinese and western), exceptionally helpful staff and an idyllic setting. Very good breakfasts to suit European tastes, which aren’t easy to find in China especially at the moment. We stayed in a private bungalow which was spacious, clean and well equipped. Highly recommend

The gardens, Karst Rock Hills and the river make this just a great site. The rooms are comfortable with small patios and views. We enjoyed our breakfasts on the outdoor terraced patio, a great way to start the day. We also had a nice apple crumble for dessert. We also ordered dinner our second night and had some comfort foods Hamburger and fries and tuna sandwich with vegetarian onion soup. Yummy. The grounds were beautiful with flowers, etc.

Dear Kewald, Thank you for sharing your memorable experience with other readers. We are indeed located in the very heart of the Yulong River Scenic Area and the only hotel that offers river access. We're happy you enjoyed the river walk from our parking to the bamboo raft jetty and took advantage of our free shuttle as well. We hope you'll have the chance to visit us again in our healthy and clean natural environment. Yours faithfully, Little Fish, Kate, Michelle, Anna, Xiao Mi, Annie and the Mountain Retreat Family

This was my third visit to Yangshuo. The first, in 1993, could hardly have been called a “visit”. It was at the end of the typical Li River tourist cruise. I simply walked from the boat to a car for the return journey to my hotel in Guilin. The second was a five-day stay in 2010 at the end of an 18-day Southwest China Cultural Minorities and Classical Landscapes tour I had designed for my startup travel company. This time, I stayed at the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat as part of my Great Hop Forward Southern Tour in search of craft beer. I was booked into a Single Side Balcony room with a river view for one night. I arrived in Yangshuo on a Thursday afternoon by high-speed train from Guiyang. The HST station is inconveniently located an hour outside of town. From there, I took a shuttle bus to the Yangshuo Tourist Transportation Center in town for ¥20. As the resort is located inside an environmentally-protected area roughly 8 kilometres outside of town, between 8am and 6pm it’s not possible to simply take a taxi there. Instead, you let the staff at the Transportation Center ticket counter know where you are going, and they arrange for a complimentary electric shuttle to transfer you there. You need to go through a security check and baggage screening before boarding the shuttle. The trip by open-air shuttle is quite quick, first travelling by busy highway, then upon turning off into the scenic area, a lazily winding country road. Upon arrival, you’re deposited in a small gravel parking lot which is, at first, anti-climactic because of its hardscrabble appearance. However, when you enter the actual resort grounds, your mood is immediately transformed by the dramatic setting and bougainvillea-accented landscaping. When checking in, you’re given the option of relaxing either indoors or outside with some soothing ginger tea. I opted to enjoy a cuppa riverside to recharge from the exertions of the morning’s journey, while also drinking in the view and the excited chatter of tourists passing by on hired bamboo rafts. Feeling rejuvenated, I walked up a flight of stairs to my room where the staff had deposited my luggage. It was well-appointed and tastefully decorated in a light colour scheme with natural wood accents. A wash basin was situated beside the bed, while the toilet and shower were in a bathroom separated by a heavy curtain. At the foot of the bed, a door led to a small balcony where one could relax with a book and beverage. Were I here on an actual vacation, I would have taken advantage of the resort’s bicycles or electric scooters to explore the area or, perhaps, go hiking or spelunking; rock climbing, though, is not my thing. However, I was in search of local craft beer, so after getting settled into my room, I headed into town. As it was after 6pm, the fastest option was taking a taxi. The standard cost seems to be ¥40. An Austrian couple staying at the resort happened to be going into town, as well, so we shared a taxi and I had an opportunity to practice my German. Unfortunately, I didn’t get back in time to sample the dinner menu. The resort was largely dark and quiet when I returned, so I turned in for the night. In the morning, I went down to the dining room for breakfast. The menu choices were mostly typical Western toast and egg dishes, which didn’t appeal to me. Instead, I opted for Yangshuo rice noodles with a fried egg. With some added chili sauce. They were perfect! While eating breakfast, I perused the dinner menu. There was a choice of European or local dishes. I was told by the Austrian chef that the Chinese dishes are quite good. I’ll have to take more time on my next visit and be sure to try them. By that time, the Austrian should also have some of his own beer available on tap, in addition to TripSmith craft beer from Guiyang. Having to be in Guilin by around noon, I checked out and the front desk arranged my complimentary shuttle to catch a bus. I also left with them a postcard to mail to Canada, which cost ¥5. I enjoyed my brief stay at the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat. I was pleased with the attentive service, the homey, local ambiance from the warm decor and manicured grounds, and the relaxed atmosphere.

Dear Rick, We're honored that you took the time to write in so much detail about your happy stay with us. Because of our few available rooms during your visit, we're sorry we couldn't upgrade you to one of our bigger balcony rooms. This winter we have added an additional family suite with terrace which can also be sold as separate rooms and is a nicer budget option. We hope upon your return we'll be able to offer you a complimentary room upgrade as our returning guest! We are indeed increasing our craft beer offerings to include a number of Guiyang City's TripSmith excellent brews! We will have mostly cans and 2-4 taps depending on the season. Our chef Andy will likely be too busy to make his own home brew until this Fall, but he says we will have a lot of excellent choices of IPA, NEIPA, APA, Pilsner, DIPA and Weizen coming soon! We also continue to serve Goose Island IPA and Weizen from the US, as well as some Belgian and German favorites. Please let us know when you are next thinking of coming so we can prepare a tasting flight for you. Yours, Little Fish
