Tierra Atacama is a boutique hotel on the edge of San Pedro de Atacama. It was created by the Purcell family, long time owners and operators of hotels, famous in Chile for the excellent food and warm hospitality. Tierra Atacama provides guest experiences that combine outdoor adventure and sports with indoor comforts, hospitality and excellent service. Tierra Atacama’s architecture, interior design and gardens were designed by some of Chile’s leading creative talent. Our objectives were to be as authentic as possible, using furniture and accessories handmade with local materials, while also creating a place that allows guests to relax, spoil themselves and enjoy the good-life in this magical part of the earth. Our ambiance is casual and friendly; we want our guests to be comfortable in our common areas just as if they were in their own homes. Enjoy one of the welcoming private corners of the hotel such as a seat by one of the terrace fire pits, lounge next to the pool or relax on one of the shady outdoor decks. When night falls, take in the brilliant stars, bask in the peace and wonder that is the Atacama Desert.

This was our second stay at a Tierra property and it more than lived up to our expectations. With spectacular food & drink, high end service, and carefully curated, small group excursions (with wonderful guides), you get the best of both worlds--a taste of adventure and boutique hotel service. Perfection.

Pool was too cold to be usable by anyone in any outdoor temperature. Rooms are dated, AC noisy and not cold enough, no bathroom privacy. Housekeeping was often late/had to rush service, and didn’t finish cleaning rooms (trash and glassware left day to day). They claim to be having staffing issues due to COVID, but it seems the issues run deeper than that. No/little ability to handle special requests like custom excursions. The excursions and guides were excellent. The hotel manager was almost never to be seen by guests, and any requests were handled by the assistant manager with grace, but limited outcomes during our stay.

We spent 5 nights at this beautiful oasis in Atacama and it far exceeded our (very high) expectations. First of all the property is top notch- while there are several high end hotels in the area, Tierra has by far the most beautiful modern architecture. We loved our room (Poniente) and the incredible view on the perfect conical volcano. The food also far exceeded expectations, especially given the remote location of the hotel. We consider ourselves to be foodies and the food here far exceeded what we found in Santiago earlier in the trip. It was fresh, creatively plated and delicious. Finally, we thoroughly enjoyed all of the excursions, from the educational and sightseeing focused (Oscar was our favorite guide through our entire time in South America) to the adrenaline focused (Toco and Lascar hikes up to ~5600 meters). We saw vicuña, guanacos, viscachas and more on our tours. Most were either private or in small groups, with the one exception of the astronomy tour which was the only one that was outsourced to another provider given equipment requirements. The staff even went above and beyond by gluing my fiancés shoe soles back together with super glue not just once but twice :)

Just wow! We spent six nights here, and every day we did a different activity. The Atacama desert is an amazing place like no other on Earth, and Tierra pays tribute to that uniqueness by being a one of a kind oasis to come back to after a hard day of activities. Tierra challenges you with their Taylor made excursions and the most extreme one we did was to climb to the summit of Cerro Toco at 5,600 m or 18,300ft. All the other excursions and hikes were unforgettable in too. Tierra feels like a cocoon of comfort, and every time you step back in, you forget that you are in one of the most inhospitable places on the planet. The room, the food, the services - everything was top notch. We did Tierra Patagonia last year which was incredible too. We will surely visit Tierra Chiloe next!

This hotel is a stunner, from the rooms to the common areas to the pool to the location. A truly unique experience in the desert. The staff, from Paula to Osmar, and everyone else was exceptionally friendly and helpful. The excursions are amazing, with great guides. Our only regret was that we didn’t stay longer!

My wife and I had been planning this trip for a while. The Tierra Atacama hotel was our choice because of the location and because we thought it would be a great base to go out for excursions in Atacama. We have stayed at very nice places before and we travel a lot, but I can say that Tierra Atacama has been one of the best stays that we have ever had. We were there for 6 nights, and from the beginning it was a very cozy and welcoming experience. Staff is very welcoming and the GM is a delight. They really do care about their guests and you feel at home. The bar and restaurant area is very welcoming, and everybody is helpful and attentive. The food was great, interesting and plenty of it. The views were spectacular, and that is a main reason as to why to come. From the entire property and all the rooms, the views were amazing. The activities were great. There is something to do for all abilities. We ride bikes to the lagoon, went to Rainbow Valley, climbed up Toco volcano (Cerro Toco), went to Piedras Rojas (that all day outing is spectacular), went star gazing….. we did a lot. If you are active there is plenty to do, and the hotel will even loan you mountain bikes to explore around town at your leisure. The best thing I can say though is that Tierra has done something really special here. They have taken a smaller more intimate property with a lot of things to do, and staffed it with great people. They make it feel cozy and intimate in a beautiful setting where you can do as much as you can. Everybody is warm and engaging, and you truly feel sad to go. A wonderful experience. But I think the the best way to describe this property is also the simplest.

Service was different in Atacama. I would say that it was not even remotely at the level we experienced in Patagonia & Chiloe in 2020. We got to know the manager at each property very well. They would check in with us daily (usually at breakfast – but often at dinner if he missed you earlier in the day) to hear about our stay. I would watch Patagonia and Chiloe managers take time to chat with EVERY guest group EVERY day! These men were more than worth their weight in gold!! Sadly, this was missing at Atacama. We talked to the manager on arrival (he showed us the property) and walked us out to the van on departure. We would see him chat to a couple groups every night, but I think that was to confirm departure arrangements. We did not experience that service and had to inquire ourselves at reception when Atacama planned to bring us back to the airport. Waitstaff all introduced themselves in Patagonia and Chiloe & chatted with us so much that they became friends. Their service was really top notch – thorough, speedy, friendly. Atacama really had hit or miss waitstaff. There are a few (Freddy, most of the male waiters and bar staff, one the young bubbly women) who stood out at a Patagonia and Chiloe level. The others either could never keep water glasses filled, tempo of the meal consistent between courses, not take a thousand steps to do a service. I am not sure if there were many new servers but we were saddened by the inconsistency. Housekeeping was fabulous like before. They serviced your room 2x/day (fresh towels, made bed, fresh bottles of water, toiletry resupply, etc.) and were unobtrusive and consistent. The room though had issues. We had re-occurring issues with a non flushing toilet. We are also wondering if the A/C filter needed cleaning – we could NOT stop sneezing whenever we were in the room. Granted – Atacama is the oldest of the 3 properties……. Food: We thought the creativity, display, and variety of menu selections was equal across all properties. Even after a week at the property not a single item was repeated!!! While something might not taste as fabulous as it looked it was ALWAYS plated in the most beautiful way. Fresh homemade rolls made 2x/day, countless pastries/desserts at all meals were some of the highlights here. I also have never eaten so many varieties of soup – all excellent that I would be hard pressed to select a favorite. We also missed the egg menu option at Atacama instead of runny scrambled eggs (this is common in S. America so it is not a dig nor a complaint). A menu here would have made breakfast options more complete. We were sad that Atacama did not offer/suggest a special customized local/regional drink everyday. We always looked forward to returning back to Patagonia and Chiloe after a day of hiking to try a new cocktail. We were also sad to discover that the famous granola bars that we got addicted to in Patagonia and Chiloe activity days was not made in Atacama…….. Guides/Drivers: We would agree that the quality of most guides and drivers (personality, interest in their job, customer service, teachers of local lore, history, environment, etc.) was of similar great quality among all properties Activity: If you desire a relaxed stay with spa and pool opportunities, Atacama is the same as Patagonia/Chiloe. Since I am not convinced active activities are the focus of Atacama, most did not start until 9am (regardless if activity was determined to be considered a half or full day). The exception was 6am start for the geysers (early morning viewing essential for maximal impact of the sight) and Lascar Volcano. We felt that a picnic lunch was often added to the activity to lengthen its duration but felt like it was filler rather than a quality add. I would say that many guides would agree because they would offer to skip lunch to return to Atacama so we could eat lunch at the restaurant. This was a huge departure from Patagonia and Chiloe. These properties had us fill out a customized sandwich order each night before our activity. The kitchen would make our sandwich (always correctly, quality ingredients, tasty, substantial) and added candy & homemade granola bars, fruit. We felt these prepacked lunch bags were of higher quality than the set up in Atacama (cold lunch set up on tablecloths a little off the road, collapsible chairs, hot/cold beverages, sodas –(wine only offered once). We felt these “lunches” were not as great as the celebration treats when we would return to the van in Patagonia and Chiloe after hiking. They always had sweet and savory treats (high caliber – fine cheeses, fruits, cakes, cookies, wine, beer, sodas shared with fellow activity mates) to enjoy before the ride back to the resort. This post hike celebration was another opportunity to get to know fellow guests, guides, and driver. These are moments that cemented relationships that I feel are missed opportunities in Atacama. While Tierra is situated in a pretty spot in the small town of San Pedro is still a lengthy distance from all of the “sights”. Be prepared for long drives to get out for a short meandering walk to a picturesque photo opportunity. Our favorite hike was half day Guatin – if you are sure footed this hike was the most satisfying of all the offerings. We thought if it started earlier than 4pm it could be enjoyed more before needing to get out of the canyon before dark. Whether you were doing 2 half day activities or one full day activity expect that you will only spend 2-4 hours outside the car (sometimes this included lunch). Many “full-day” activities returned to the resort by 1pm or 2pm which would have time permitted a 2nd half day activity (but remember we would have had to pay $120-$250/pp extra for that option) since afternoon half activities did not start until 3:30 or 4pm. This would never have happened at Patagonia or Chiloe. If arrived early and we had energy and there was space in van/group we could have added another activity. Activity coordinators in Patagonia and Chiloe met every request by trying to say “YES” where Atacama always started the conversation with “NO”. If hiking and active options are important to you, this property does not have the same option and quality of Patagonia/Chiloe. We also discovered that if you departed late on day of checkout you were not “allowed” to schedule another off property activity without additional charge. In Patagonia & Chiloe both properties maxed out activities for as long as we were on property (early arrivals and late departures). They were happy to schedule something last minute or something local. For example, we had the most amazing horseback riding experience on the shore of the lake in front of Tierra Patagonia on the morning (half day activity) of departure. We would say that experience left us with an overwhelming positive impression of the quality, flexibility, and seriousness staff took client experience to heart. It was a quality of service unsurpassed by any other property we have stayed in the world. There is not much flexibility for modification of activities in Atacama so choose carefully! In addition, the activity directors in Patagonia and Chiloe would check in with guests as they returned to hear about their experiences as well as modify for the upcoming days as needed. We felt like they really were interested in our health, energy, and satisfaction with our selected activities. Atacama NEVER checked in with us once during our lengthy stay. To summarize – we felt the family atmosphere cultivated by our Patagonia and Chiloe stays in 2020 is part of what distinguished these properties from any other luxury resort stay in the world. They had world renowned accommodations, food, activities, views, and service. Feeling like a family member staying at a luxurious property with other like minded individuals creates a unique and memorable experience. Tierra is trying to give you a Four Seasons or a Six Senses property experience (food, accommodation, service). We thought Tierra also brought to the luxury experience their love/respect of their environment, passion for the outdoors, and created personalized/customized programs in a compassionate, attentive, sincere, and enthusiastic manner to every guest as a unique offering for a luxury expereince. Sadly, Atacama did not meet those expectations.

I would be one of the first people to shout from the mountaintops the value and amazing opportunities of Tierra properties. We were unexpectedly super disappointed in Atacama. Perhaps it is our fault for having an unrealistic expectation of what we should expect of this property after staying in their other two properties (Patagonia and Chiloe) in 2020. Since that trip we have told everyone to visit any & all of the Tierra properties but after our last experience, I am nervous to make that same recommendation. Let me explain my reasoning for this review. Everything we loved about Patagonia and Chiloe Tierra was missing in Atacama. Perhaps this started at pickup. All transfers are included in Tierra but when we arrived at Calama, we had a difficult time finding our driver (small sign for Tierra) and when we identified ourselves he claimed that he had NO knowledge of us. I brought up my reservation email confirming pickup at the airport and our names and the driver had to call the reception desk to confirm (as if we were not to be believed). This was initially worrisome but we brushed aside what we perceived could be an easy miscommunication between the driver and reception. We arrived on property and were greeted by the manager and then passed off to the activity director of the day. One of the outstanding benefits of staying at a Tierra property is the "all inclusive" setup (activities, food, most beverages, lodging). There is NO need to think about pulling out the wallet or signing for charges during your stay. Well, we quickly discovered this is not the philosophy of this property (and perhaps not the philosophy of Tierra 2022?). First of all, we found out that we were limited to two off property activities per day (unlike Patagonia/Chiloe). If we wanted to add a 3rd activity it would cost between $120-$250/pp/day except if the 3rd activity was star gazing (which would only incur a $35/pp charge). Of course, we agreed as we were trying to maximize our off property activities as much as possible. In addition, you were presented a “bill” after every lunch and dinner with the option of adding the recommended 10% tip or not to your bill. This became hugely annoying because you could NEVER leave the table until your server had time to get the print out bill to your table for you to sign. In Patagonia and Chiloe it was explained on arrival that we would have the opportunity to tip anyone we wanted at the end of our stay and we could could pay

Great location. Geology and geography second to none. Great location in San Pedro de Atacama from which to push out and explore the singular place that is the Atacama Desert and Altiplano. Tierra Atacama food and service were amazing. Comfortable rooms and beds. A few little quirks that you wouldn't see at an established chain in a big city but that are understandable in this remote, slower-paced location: the temperature changes made the doors not close easily at various times of the day, the safe in the room only worked 25% of the time, etc. Just minor annoyances that were enough to knock off a star, given the premium price you pay for the all-inclusive, but very much a place we enjoyed and would go back to again.
