During a business trip, the institution that I visited booked me up in this hotel and my initial impression was that this was good value for money at usd 12 per night. But instead it turned out to be one of the most expensive stays I have had in Cambodia! On the first night, I woke up at 2 am with a lot of noise from the room next to me with several girls giggling and obviously entertaining someone! The following day, I was so naive to leave some cash in my briefcase in my room - and 30 mins later when I came back usd150 was gone. Obviously someone with key access to my room (staff) had helped themselves. When I confronted the manager and staff - they denied - but one of them could not look me in the eyes. The manager (who was slightly red-eyed and smelling of beer) offered to let me stay for free - but it is hardly free at USD 75 per night... So if you stay here - do take seriously care of your valuables (hotel does not offer any safe..)!…
For the price, the rooms are basic and decent. I was here with a large group (20 pax) for NGO work, so it suits us best. Not the nearest to town, but they have tuktuks around and it doesn't cost much. Rooms equipped with clean towels, toiletries and a TV. Pretty much it.
My stay was in early June 2012 and the room rate was $12 per night. The Golden Palace doesn't have the best location (it's across the river from town and not on the riverside). The rooms aren't the best and the hotel itself isn't the most interesting place. For all that, though, it is a decent place and the staff are very friendly and honest. They can book tickets and help with advice and so on. The previous reviewer is right about their being a few mosquitoes buzzing around here and there and the bathroom did have a couple of hairs in the shower, but it wasn't the end of the world. The room had a TV, a bed and a place to hang clothes. That's really the extent of it. The wifi signal is only available in the lobby, but there is a desk area suitable for writing or working on your computer (if you could get wifi - I used a Mobitel 3G sim card tethered to the iPhone). Aside from location, what the hotel really suffers from is being a mid-range price hotel (in Battambang terms) that provides really no value to distinguish it, and because of its location that makes it a net loser. If it wants to attract customers to a spot across the river that's of no real interest it needs to find some reason for people to come there other than the reason I did, which is that my taxi driver from the border didn't know where to go and stopped at the first place he could find. In summary, it's a safe, forgettable place to rest your head in a town with better options and it has a very nice staff. It's like trying to review a McDonald's restaurant. What do you say? "Filled me up, would go again in a pinch." Same thing here.…
It was a very dirty hotel...a lot of bugs in the room, stains in the blankets, hairs in the shower, dogs eating from the garbage which is everywhere in the dining area for the breakfast...etc. There are better hotels...
