Part of the historical center of São Paulo, República was once a fancy residential area. República Square holds a craft and food fair every weekend, right by the subway entrance. Nearby, one of the neighborhood’s main attractions is the Italian Building, where you can see the city from the 42nd floor. The Copan Building also deserves a close look, with 1,160 apartments and a huge floor area that inspired filmmakers and other artists. To get the feeling of São Paulo in the beginning of the 1900s, visit the Municipal Theatre – you will be amazed by its architecture. The area also features several galleries. República is a great area to explore during daytime, but use caution if visiting alone at night.

Spent 2 nights at the Joamar, and that was enough for me. I will say the it was not the hotel’s fault, it’s just that the area it is in is not one I would want to return to. The hotel itself was good. It was a good price, very clean, super friendly staff and decent breakfast.

Perfectly adequate little hotel about two blocks from the Galeria do Rock. Getting a cab for an early Sunday morning flight turned out to be harder than expected, but no complaints otherwise. I would stay there again if we make it back to SP.
