Casa Marques is the city's newest artsy house of Rio de Janeiro. Built on the foundations of an old colonial mansion in Santa Teresa, each room has been designed to allow you to enjoy a unique view of the city in an elegant and sophisticated environment. Everything here is centred around art, which is vitally important to us. Contemporary art is our guiding principle.

Detailed Reviews
This hotel is a bit difficult to get to and some uber drives might refuse to go all the way there because of the many communities (favelas) in the area. But fear not as it is actually quite easy to get there and really safe too. The views you will get, the warm welcome by everyone, the amazing bed and peaceful pool area are all worth it! We just could not get enough of the views and woke up everyday at 5:30 to watch the sun rise. It was definitely one of the most amazing views I’ve ever experienced and I have traveled extensively! Rio is my birth land and I haven’t visited in more than 20 years. We felt very safe, there were lots of police around the city. We haven’t visited much of Santa Teresa but it’s a very interesting area. The hotel is not walkable anywhere but taxis and uber are cheap to go around. The staff at Casa Marques were really friendly, we ordered ifood in the evenings and their breakfast is really tasty. Anything you need you just have to ask and they will do their best to help. 100% recommend this place!

Some guests say the location is very far from the tourist attractions and very hard to find. Yes, some are far away. Taxi drivers are getting lost and some do not even want to take you. That's how it is. First time it's hard to get there. After that, things are simplified. From there you can call a local taxi company that knows where the location is or you can even call an Uber. Staff are very kind and always help with directions to drivers. But it's worthwhile doing this. Location, landscape, tranquility, everything is wonderful. We woke up early in the morning and saw the sunrise in the middle of an urban jungle, with the birds delighting with their morning trills.
Everything is very intimate, tastefully decorated and the staff make you feel like at home. Especially Paolo from the reception, who spent a lot of time with us, explaining where to go and what to see. We also got the room with the best view in the entire hotel: Room No. 11. I think it's the only one with a small balcony. We stayed in more hotels in Rio and this was the last one. As a last retreat... And it was spectacular! Photos say everything ...

We were there for two evenings during the 2016 Olympics. The location (in the hills), though a bit inconvenient, afforded the most spectacular views of the city, particularly from their rooftop bar. The rooms were more than adequate, the kitchen had some room for improvement -- but the service, particularly due to the proprietors, was heart-warming while professional. They compensated for the inconvenient location with a private care hire, which, unfortunately is not mentioned on their website. Casa Marques is in an unique environment, with unique decor, not your regular management, and hence a unique experience.

As one can very easily tell from other reviews, the views from this hotel are great. With that being said, while it is quite a unique view of Rio, I strongly believe that these views do not make staying at this hotel worthwhile. First and foremost, the location is terrible. It is inconvenient for tourists with a painstakingly long and stressful taxi journey to/from everything (and I stress EVERYTHING - there is nothing within walking distance, nor is the area safe for travel on foot). The roads are steep, most drivers struggle to navigate to the hotel and the proximity to the nearby favelas made us uncomfortable (even if irrationally). Compounding this inconvenience, the hotel does not have dinner options which makes it even more difficult to relax during your stay. Beyond this, the staff was rude, the owner was both arrogant and unconcerned with the requests of guests, the views were polluted by the other surrounding scenery, and the condition of the room was lacking relative to other equally priced hotels. We were sold by the many pictures of the view posted here, but feel that the negatives were not adequately highlighted, thereby hindering our ability to make an informed decision. When we visit Rio again, we will stick to a hotel in one of the more typical regions of the city.

My boyfriend and I booked a two night stay at the hotel off a deal we found on Gilt. My brother decided to join us on our trip at the last minute, so when we arrived we asked if he could stay with us in our room. They said that he could not, and that we would need to purchase another room if we wanted him to stay with us. The room had a very large bed and more than enough room for a cot, but they said it was against their policy to allow three people in the room. The rate they were quoting us for one night for one person was more than we had paid for both of us for two nights. We asked if we could add him to our room for 25% of what we paid per night (typical policy for hotels in Brazil and the case for every other hotel we have stayed at) - they refused. We asked if we could add him to our room for 50% of what we paid per night - they refused. We asked if we could pay 100% of what we paid on our existing reservation per night for an additional room - they refused. We asked if they had ANY flexibility - they said no. They had rooms available, and this all occurred in the afternoon, meaning the likelihood of someone coming and booking all of their empty rooms at the full rate price that same day was very low. We explained that they could either a) allow us to purchase another room at the price we paid or at some reasonable premium or b) allow us to pay some premium to add my brother to our room, keeping their vacant rooms available, or c) not work with us at all, causing us to leave the hotel with a terrible taste in our mouths. They chose (c). We were very patient with them the whole time, they were curt and inflexible.
We had to deal with this issue of adding my brother to all the hotels we stayed at during our trip (4 hotels, all 4 or 5 star) and not one of them treated us like this. They all understood the situation and were willing to work with us.
The hotel itself is very well decorated and maintained, but I did not feel safe in this location. It is on a mountain, and you must drive up long and winding roads, past two large favelas to get there. Right next door to the hotel is a large favela. The favela overlooks the pool area, and you can hear people talking from inside their houses - it is very close. All that separates the hotel grounds from the favela is a short concrete walk and some barbed wire. I was relieved when we drove away from there back down to the Copacabana area.

To start on the positives - the hotel is beautiful and the views are as incredible as pictured - the rooms are also well decorated and the beds comfortable. The view was the main reason for us booking this hotel and we had read a few negative remarks and chosen to ignore them - as you may well also chose to do.
However, I will say that once you are actually there (or even whilst you're trying to find the hotel on the way there in a taxi) you quickly realise that these 'niggles' will negatively impact your overall trip. When our taxi driver did eventually locate the hotel (which is not actually located on the road it claims to be and is not signposted at all from the main road) he seemed extremely concerned that we were staying there and warned us not to step outside the gates on our own - the hotel is essentially in the middle of an extremely dangerous favela (also demonstrated to us by police officers who pointed a massive gun in our faces whilst we were in the back of another taxi on our way home from dinner one evening).
Please don't read into this that we are a couple of uncultured, spoiled brits - as we had when we read some of the negative reviews before booking. We had assumed when booking that this was a quaint family run hotel and that we would be staying amongst the locals in a local part of the city - however it felt far from this, none of the staff lived at the hotel it seemed and staff rotated on a regular basis - not quite the personal, family atmosphere or service we expected - in fact I second many of the other comments around the arrogance of some.
I was also shocked and disappointed that, given how isolated the hotel is (15 min taxi to the nearest 'town'), they chose to use this as an opportunity to profiteer - the water here was the most expensive water we came across on our trip to Brazil (including restaurants, Sao Paolo and isolated lodges in the middle of the pantanal) and £2.50 for a pack of M&M's!! Surely when you're guests can't step outside or walk to the local shop you should provide reasonably priced basics and at least a complimentary bottle of water?! We could only assume that this was to help fund the incredible number of staff that seemed to be wondering around the hotel - easily a 2:1 ratio of staff to guests!
The icing on the cake for us was being charge $150 for the genuinely worst bottle of 'fizz' we have tasted. My husband had requested a bottle ahead of our visit in order to celebrate our 10 year anniversary together - he was not quoted a price on the bottle or given a choice - and given the quality of wines we'd had out during our trip (for far less money than this bottle) we were extremely taken aback when presented with the bill at the end of our stay!! The hotels response was that "all our wines are imported from France". Unnecessarily arrogant I would suggest, given we have sampled and enjoyed far nicer sparkling wines from neighbouring countries during our trip to South America.
We finished our Rio trip at the 5* Miramar hotel on Copacabana - where we were greeted with a (free) glass of champagne on arrival, complimentary water in our room (and on the beach) and M&M's were less than £2 a bag!! All in a place that's safe to walk to the shop at the end of the road and purchase your own goods if needed!
Regarding the isolated location - yes taxis are cheap, but you do quickly tire of having to travel a min 15-30 mins in a taxi everywhere - and it may start to outweigh the benefit of that stunning view...
In summary, I would describe this hotel as per my headline 'style over substance' - a beautiful hotel, lacking in personality or service. There are plenty of great views to be had in Santa Teresa and indeed Rio overall, in my opinion I would opt for an alternative next time.

My friend and I spent a week in Rio; half the time on Ipanema beach and half the time at this amazing hotel. If you want a different scene from the beach I HIGHLY recommend coming here to see Santa Teresa. It felt safer and much more comfortable in Santa Teresa than near the beaches.
The hotel itself is in an old colonial house - and it truly feels like a home with only a handful of guest rooms. There's a gorgeous infinity pool with a view of the Christo and Rio below. The style was a mix of eclectic and mid century modern which was super trendy but warm. The room was huge and even had blue tooth speakers. The food was some of the best in Rio - get the plate of the day every day! Sophia made killer drinks. Paolo was the nicest man ever and even helped us order in food so we could watch Game of Thrones.
The only drawback is the hotel is not walkable at all... in fact uber drivers can barely find it. But it's still 20-30 minutes from Rio and 10 minutes from Santa Teresa, so not bad.
We will definitely be back!

Our taxi had a hard time finding the hotel. Apparently the hotel’s address number (which is up on the hill) is the same number as the building on the main road and we almost got kicked out from the cab on the main road. Luckily few locals saved our life. I think if there is the hotel sign on the main road or even bigger sign at the gate would be very helpful. It’s not close to key sights but the view make it worth staying. Our room is nice also. Though the service is not up to professional hotel, but staffs are nice and very helpful. If you really miss your fur friend back home like me, two dogs here will help make you smile. They are super friendly.

For a hotel at this price level these guys have a long way to go.
While the views over beautiful Rio are spectacular and the hotel has all the amenities to make this a truly great experience for guests, there seemed to be a distinct lack of care for service and attention to detail.
We stayed over the holiday period between Christmas and New Year and booked our stay as a treat. It turned out on arrival there was no food (other than ifood - the Brazilian equivalent of uber eats/ Deliveroo). Hard to order there if you’re not familiar with local restaurants. On new year’s day, we missed breakfast, and didn’t really have any other options to find something to eat. We had to ask for plates and napkins at meals, the breakfast options were fairly limited for a hotel in this price bracket and there was no possibility of eating on the terrace outside (although the staff seemed to have made the most of that view for their own NY eve dinner on the terrace while the guests were relegated to the downstairs breakfast area for dinner). The bar staff by the pool were often away from their posts so we had to look for them around the hotel to be able to order something to drink, or to get pool towels. The New Years dinner was advertised as something special (and the price was quite special too!) but was poorly presented, poorly managed and poorly cooked.
While the staff in general were good natured and helpful there seemed to be a distinct lack of management in charge of the place. Given the price bracket and what you get at similar hotels in Santa Teresa, I’m minded to take my money elsewhere.

Charming, well located hotel. Staff was extremely attentive and helpful. Rooms are beautiful, well maintained and, in the case of the larger rooms, very spacious. Pool area is gorgeous, with comfortable chaises -- though the pool itself is somewhat small. Food is very good, with a generous, delicious breakfast included and an excellent a la carte menu at the pool. And, then finally there are the simply spectacular views--both from the pool deck and most rooms--of Rio, the bay, Sugarloaf and Christ the Redeemer. A truly special place to stay for our truly special trip.
