I don't usually like to give out secrets of places that I visted, but THIS places (Casa Mango Mango) was such a great place. The staff was accommodating, friendly and treated everyone like family. The House itself is beautiful and the room we stayed in was impeccable. They also served breakfast every morning, with fresh fruit and juices. Truly a... More

If you look at the website, the pictures of Casa Mango Mango are gorgeous. And it, mostly, looks like that. What you can't see is how dirty it was, that there were bugs in the bathroom, that the pool hadn't clearly been cleaned in quite a while, that the breakfast was very poor, that when we arrived the person who... We here at Casa MangoMango would like to offer our apologies for the disappointment that was experienced here and to clarify a few matters.>> Casa MangoMango is a 100-year-old mansion surrounded by lush gardens in a beautiful tropical climate. As has such, it is utterly impossible to expect that there will never be a random insect inside the... More

Last newyears-eve we stayed for four days in Mango Mango. Despite a illness at that time, we enjoyed the great atmosphere, the pool, fresh breakfast and ambiance of the neighbourhood. Okay, as die-hard backpacker I have to say that it's not the cheapest choice, but around newyear it's expensive everywhere in Rio ;-)

I have just spent a week at this wonderful Pousada (B´n B) in the quaint neighbourhood of St. Teresa. On a hill with great views of the city, the Pousada is still within walking distance of the centre. When I arrived after a long flight, I was met at the airport by a very friendly taxi-driver --- pre-arranged by the... More

I was shocked at the price of accommodation in Rio. Casa Mango Mango seemed like a good option for my budget and it should have been great. I read about it in a Guardian article on the bo ho chic side to Rio in the Santa Therea area which is really beautiful. The room upstairs had the most stunning views.... More

Staying in Santa Teresa

Neighborhood Profile
Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a bohemian enclave hosting many local artists’ studios. The narrow, winding streets of this neighbourhood were revitalised years ago, and visitors can now stroll through this area to view magnificent mansions dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century. A highlight not miss: Museu Chacará do Céu, a former mansion turned museum which houses works by prominent Brazilian modern artists.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Casa MangoMango is one of the few places to stay in Rio where you can relax in a magnificent colonial, tropical setting and yet be right next to the best nightlife and activities this marvelous city offers. Set in a quaint cobbled street in the old part of the city, Santa Teresa, Casa MangoMango offers easy access both to beaches, forest and city. The house is on the the hundred-year old tram route, only ten minutes from the city centre. The house itself is a huge colonial mansion, guarded by two magnificent bi-centenarian mango trees. Hence the name, Casa MangoMango! Resplendent with original features, the house has been restored and decorated in funky, upbeat designs to cater for every taste. And outside, in the lovely, tropical gardens, there’s a cool pool too! Built by Julia Lopes, a Brazilian novelist, journalist, playwright, and lecturer, the house hosted many a sarau for the literati of the early 20th century. Today we try to keep her spirit alive by inviting local artists to display their work and employing local musicians on our multi-lingual staff. Our musical and artistic events may well be some of your best holiday memories in Brazil. ... more   less
