We were recommended this hostel before we left home and also by others once we'd gotten to Rio and after the very disappointing Ocean Inn, this hostel was great. So convenient. We liked our private room, it was nice, clean and quiet with a good bathroom and situated at the back of the hostel. Staff were friendly and very helpful.... More

Located in Ipanema, only 2 squares from the beach and 5 min from Metro Station, Nice staff but expensive anyway... it's just an hostel and double room was for R$140 ... but Rio de Janeiro it's beautiful ! In comparaison to the other accomation prizes in the city it's not bad at all. For low budget travelers the kitchen it's... More

This was our first stop in Brazil and was a great place to start our trip. The staff were really helpful with helping organise trips, give directions and recommendations. Rooms basic but hostel had everything we needed. Would highly recommend!

Bedbugs. While not entirely hostel's fault, they knew that rooms have had bedbugs recently, gave no warning. Worst was when I asked about deposit refund- the response was that since I reported it, l probably BROUGHT bugs in, and that hostel was the victim since they lost money over fumigation costs. Kicker was this- "Most people are understanding and see... More

Unfortunately, from time to time, and like many other hostels and hotels, we suffer from bedbugs being introduced to our premises. We take the problem seriously, and the morning after the guest had sneaked out in the middle of the night without paying, we closed the room and fumigated. We also sent the clothes of anyone staying in that room... More

This hotel was an adequate base for our trip to Rio, the location was unbeatable and was the reason why i paid 220BRL per night. The hotel can be slightly difficult to find as it is an old house converted into a hostel, make sure you have the address at hand. Most of the staff were friendly and willing to... More

Stayed here for a few nights in May. Just few things to mention really. The staff are a bit cold. Not rude really but also not in keeping with the people's attitude in Brazil in general. They do help but it's occasionally like trying to get blood out of a stone. The owner's a nice guy. Felt it necessary to... More

We stayed in The Mango Tree for 4 nights and again 1 night on our way back home. We had a small double room with our own bathroom and it was by far the best private room in a hostel I've stayed in. The room was, of course, small, but we didn't feel we needed more space. The bathroom was... More

Stayed in a private room for three nights. The staff were friendly and the self service breakfast was tummy with fresh bread, cheese, ham, cake, cereal, nice coffee, fresh juice and fruits. The room was small with noisy aircon and a fan. The sheets were worn out (had a couple of holes in) and the room was fairly shabby, but... More

As many other travelers, we decided to go with The Mango Tree for it's good recommendations. We stayed there for 12 nights or so, at a private double en-suite. We payed 170Rs per normal night, and during Carnaval, we had to pay 3500Rs for a 6-nights package. As expected, the location is terrific. You are just one block from Posto... More

The Mango Tree is a highly regarded hostel that prides itself on the level of service and amenities that it provides for its guests. We intentionally target an age group of 25-45, and specifically a type of traveller who is considerate and thoughtful to their fellow travellers. It is contradictory to expect an atmosphere of young partying travellers who are... More

Neighborhood Profile
Ipanema
Ipanema is considered Rio's crown jewel. It offers the best view of the sunset from Arpoador and is inspiration for the legendary song, “The Girl from Ipanema.” Ipanema is an upscale area, home to many high-end restaurants and luxury shops, many of which can be found on the charming Garcia d'Ávila Avenue. The neighbourhood is very rich culturally, housing many art galleries that show contemporary art. There is also a great variety of nightlife in the neighbourhood, which buzzes with many options for every taste.
