This place almost ruined our holiday. We actually cancelled, throwing away the money, and booked elsewhere. Rotten doors, peeling ceilings, cobwebs, broken toilets, old dirty towels..... but with an amazing view! (Yes, very odd). The people running this hotel are a shame on mankind, they could make this place great if they spent some money.
I was looking for a hotel in Leblon for our mother-daughter trip to Rio de Janeiro. This Mercure Hotel's physical look does not compare to some other Mercure Hotels where I have stayed, but our stay there was very satisfactory. It is kind of a mixture of a hotel and apartment building. I think some clients live there for long periods. Our room was on the 17th floor with a balcony and with views of both Christ the Redeemer and the beach. We had some nice times sitting on the balcony sipping wine and taking in the scenery. The apartment was quite large for a hotel room. We had a bedroom and a living room with a pull out sofabed, TV and a dining table w/ chairs. The rooms look pretty basic. The bed was comfortable enough, no complaints there. We found an English speaking channel, but we didn't really watch TV at all. There was a good shower with good water pressure and hot water. We were told by a friend that you are not supposed to throw toilet paper to the potty in Brazil. We tried to remember that. The place was clean with clean linens. There was also some sort of kitchen alcove with a hot plate, a refrigerator and some dishes. Weirdly enough, there were no coffee maker, kettles or pans, so we did not benefit for having a kitchenette. In the refrigerator there were some minibar items, but the frig was big enough for us to store big bottles of water, juice and other breakfast items. The hotel has a pool on top of the building with nice views, but the pool was closed for renovation for the whole time we were there. That was pity, because my daughter really looked forward to spending an evening by the pool. There were also a sauna and a restaurant in the pool floor. We also were just a block from the beach. Mr Campos Aguiar at the front desk was helpful, whenever we had any questions. We found a big grocery store 1-2 blocks away, a post office just 1-2 blocks away. We could catch buses to Santa Teresa, to Corcovado (Christo Redentor) (BR$3.00) and to the GIG Intnl Airport very close by (BR$13.50). We were also able to take the airport bus from the Domestic Airport Santos Dumont to very close to the hotel (BR$13.50). We felt perfectly safe taking buses. There was good complimentary wifi in the room and also a computer in the lobby area for customer's use. Our rate didn't include a breakfast, so we didn't use the restaurants. All and all I would recommend this hotel, and without hesitation would stay there again.…
Bed Sheets were dirty and stained : ( which made me doubt that the towels were clean as well. Best advise is to have new sheets/towels brought to room upon checkin. Other then that nice hotel with great views and good working distance to beach - only 2 blocks away.
We booked this hotel while it was on special offer so was good value for money. Rooms are large and very spacious. It is in a great location just minutes from the beach and Leblon nightlife. My only complaint would be the friendliness of staff - at check-in we were almost ignored while the staff member carried on a conversation with someone else - we were offered no information about the area and reception staff barely lifted their heads as you came and went. That said - if you can get this hotel on special offer it's well worth it!
Great location, ok hotel. Pros: Great location, great view from the rooftop café, rooms are quite large for Rio standards and clean enough. Cons: Breakfast is very expensive for what is offered; I stayed with my kids in a standard one-bedroom room, and the lack of curtains/blinds in the kitchen area meant that they woke up quite early; and the sofa-bed they slept on was quite old. Very expensive, but I suppose that's true for all Rio hotels.
