Soaking up the breeze, right bang smack on the sand, arms flung wide open to the Atlantic, this is JANEIRO. Located in the middle of Leblon’s marvellous beach-culture, we bring Rio’s bossa vibe to life. Nature is a joyful accomplice. And what about that view? The Cagarras islands scatter across a horizon blue as far as the eye can see. No make-believe needed here. At night, the Moon beams, and in the distance, the lights of Vidigal glitter and dance like fireflies. Pure poetry for the eyes, woven into the urban effervescence of the city. The barefoot simplicity of the beach finds its way into the smallest of details; from the rooms to the food, the music to the art, all is an extension of the golden sands out front. We sway to no other rhythm but Rio’s.

We spent 4 nights in this little jewel boutique hotel as part of our honeymoon in Rio. They upgraded us to a fabulous ocean view suite (Thank-you)- which was spectacular. Really nice scandi design, really comfy beds, nice bathroom amenities, shower with the best view and really nice staff. The GM is a lady, which we sadly never met, but you can tell she has the eye for detail and is doing a great job running the place. Reception staff were super friendly and helpful with recommendations of restaurants. A special mention the Mateus in the roof top bar! What a nice guy! Always smiling, speaks loads of languages, great advice on safety in the city and also makes the best lemon Caipirinha’s he had in Rio! The rooftop has a nice quite bar, with a great playlist and views on the beach, ocean and city. The only recommendations I would have, is to have a raised split platform built for the deck chairs at the back, so that when you sit down you can also enjoy the view on the ocean and the beach which is magnificent. It is true that when you sit down you can hardly see anything (and we are very tall people) which is a real shame. I’m sure if you did this more people would use the rooftop.

My partner recently treated me to a luxury trip to Rio for 6 nights to celebrate my milestone birthday. We stayed at the stylish Janeiro Hotel in Leblon. This new boutique hotel is situated in a very safe area. The clean and quiet Leblon beach is directly across the road. There are landmarks, restaurants, a metro station and a shopping mall all within short walking distance. The rooms were a good size with a clean modern scandinavian design, which we loved. All of the staff were amazing, especially the reception staff Victoria, Yasmin and Gabrielle and breakfast staff in particular Thaine (sorry, if I have spelt her name wrong) all of whom were exceptionally friendly, helpful, professional, caring and honest. The breakfast room has a view of Leblon beach, the music added perfect ambience and the food was pleasantly adequate. Also, the bar manager was so accommodating when I made some suggestions about playing Deep House music to go with the trendy vibes of the Hotels Bar/Restaurant agreed and was very attentive. I was left completely gobsmacked when I had been left a Birthday present from the hotel I think organised by Victoria (Thank you very much again). It was beautiful Canvas beach bag made by Brazilian Designer Osklen, such a lovely touch. We also were surprised several times with little desserts left in our room. A massive Thank You to the amazing staff at The Janeiro Hotel for making my milestone birthday unforgettable. We did not want to leave and when we return to Rio one day there is only one place that I want to stay and that is The Janeiro Hotel.

We were very excited to stay at this hotel because we heard it was the new "hot" place to stay, but the lack of information about it on the website should have clued me in that it really has nothing besides really nice rooms. We pulled up and immediately were wondering if we had the right place. The "lobby" is a tiny area that is not exciting or inspiring. We had an "oceanfront suite", which like the other reviews say, was not a suite, but one nice sized room. The room WAS spectacular and extremely clean. It really was heavenly staying in the room. But that's where the experience ended. They say they have a "pool." It is a dipping pool on an out of the way teeny balcony with no lounges. The breakfast was nice, albeit quiet, and the staff was attentive. The other "bars" in the hotel were very quiet. We bought a day pass to enjoy the beautiful rooftop pool at the Fasano and we were so disappointed we hadn't stayed there. Perhaps the rooms would not have been as nice, but the experience would have been more dynamic and fitting to what our expectations of Rio were.

Why does such beautiful city have clear difficulties regarding the issue of tourism? Take this as an example. I am a "carioca" and have checked in at the hotel Janeiro. Called my daughter and my son in law to have lunch at the hotel's restaurant. To my surprise and disappointment, I was informed upon my arrival at the restaurant that, on a Saturday (!) the place was closed for a "private event". And never mind the guests who were not warned about it and had paid a high price. Disgusting. Saturday, 15 June, 2019.

I'm quite harsh in my review of this hotel, as you will read. Why is that? Well, the hotel "sells" itself as a premium hotel, and charge you a lot of money to stay in the hotel. With this comes very high expectations and "demands" from the guests as well. And at the moment, Janeiro Hotel is not, in my opinion, living up to what you pay for. The hotel is in a "soft opening" since December, and we are now in June!? Seems like a very long "break in" period? I stayed in a "Oceanfront suite" at 2004BRL + 15% tax + 9BRL/day in tourist tax = 2313,6BRL/580,5$/521,5€ per night. This is the full price on high season. As I was there in May, the price is "negotiable", and I got it down a bit. The "suite" is not really a suite, it's a large room. But a very nice room with absolutely amazing view right out on the beach. As these "suites" are the only rooms facing the beach, I'm not sure that you will actually have a view of the beach from the other rooms offered? I was very happy with my "suite", found it beautifully decorated, the bed was lovely, the shower good with a view right out on the beach. The WiFi worked flawless during my stay, and was fast. But to call it a suite, I think is stretching it a bit. It's a large room. But, there was no "Hotel info" file/papers available, so I had no idea when the breakfast started, did not know if the hotel offered laundry service, or what restaurants/attractions/etc did the hotel recommend? No free bottle of drinking water included per day. Only two Nespresso capsules included per STAY! Not per day, per stay. There was like 700 tv channels on the TV, but there was no information on where the main channels are located. So to find the news, for instance, I had to search for it page by page, instead of just punching in the numbers. Annoying! Hallways where the elevator and other rooms are, is extremely "loud" from inside the room. You hear as soon as someone is out there, and I got woken up at 02:30 one morning because one guest came home, and decided that it was good practice to slam the door shut at that time. Extremely annoying and something that I don't think is ok! If I can hear anyone out there, that means that anyone can hear me in my room. Breakfast is good, with good selection. Staff need to be more attentive thou. It was more than once that I had to make staff aware that I wanted more coffee, for instance, by lifting the cup up. Two things that annoyed me every breakfast was that the coffee was not strong enough, but more importantly, not hot enough. I'm here referring to the espresso and cappuccino. A few days into my visit I saw why. They are not using a real espresso machine, but a "Nespresso" type of machine. In a hotel of this standard I think that they should without a doubt have a proper espresso machine! On one of the days, the croissant that I took was far from fresh. On the last morning, the knife at the table was not clean. Really!? Come on staff, this should not happen! The pool was not open when I was there, they were doing maintenance work on it. But the beach service that the hotel have is good, and the guys working there are good. I had lunch one of the days in the hotel restaurant, and the grilled shrimps and steak I had was very good. I used the room service on a few occasions, and found the steak very good. The location of the hotel is perfect, and I found the reception staff very good. Especially Vitoria, and one more girl that I regrettably did not take the name of, that helped me with my luggage issue that I had. Thank you to both of you! It's easy to think that I did not like the hotel when reading my review. But that is not the case, I do like it. But I expect more from it! I will most likely come back.
