$ 130 Overcharged on holidays and dumped after – Really Mr. Miranda (General Manager)?! What kind of review do would you expect, after your credit card would have been overcharged with $ 130? What else would you think if the management couldn’t care less about you and doesn’t reimburse you? It can happen to you too, well done and welcome to Rio Design Hotel in Brazil. We booked our holiday's right amount the peak of the great Brazilian Carnival. Our “Executive Suite” did not reflect the $ 1200 we paid for. The furnishing of our room looked and felt overaged, more like out of a movie from the '90s. Breakfast was ok but in a very small room. Impossible to host all the guest. We always came late to avoid the main crowd. The service was friendly while trying to deal with all the request. The breakfast selection was ok, but nothing special. We had better in other Brazilian hotels. Like I said the hotel service staff was friendly, but the supervisor and management couldn’t care less. The moment you were asking questions, you could already feeling their patience level decreasing. Lack of empathy and customer service skills including. They shouldn’t work in customer service if they make a guest feel they hate their jobs. Especially in Brazil, where people are usually relaxed and friendly towards tourist. Anyways, we left the hotel with mixed feelings. But the surprise came afterwards. As we received our next credit card statement the hotel overcharged an extra amount of $ 130. We contacted booking several times, also wrote several E-Mails and called on our own cost. Just to hear, we look into it - That’s it. The general manager Mr. Miranda did need to respond after submitting the claim to our travel portal. However, that’s it. After I never heard from the Rio Design Hotel again and our money is gone. All in all, I can't recommend this hotel at all, the price value is not in proportion at all. If you prefer customer service skip the Rio Design Hotel. If you don’t want to get overcharged like us or lose $ 130 Dollars extra you should stay away from this place. A funny side note, after leaving Brazil my credit card was used twice to pay for goods in Rio. Besides the hotel, we never used the credit card at all. So seems someone from the hotel shared our credit card details. Probably a last customer gift from the Rio Design Hotel! Thanks for nothing. We will not come back!…
Great Location 100 metres from Copacabana beach and not far to Ipanema beach. 10 mins from Gen Osorio subway station Our room was very large with big bed I think they called it an executive room. Staff at reception bell captain etc were lovely very helpful and friendly apart from one guy who was unnecessarily abrupt to the point of rudeness. Breakfast was adequate but not wonderful. All in all tho a good place to stay
Overall satisfied. The good: The price. Hotel was really clean, the help at front desk very helpful, friendly and humble. The location was second row from the beach, 2 minutes of walk. We felt safe at anytime of the day or night. Good size safety box on the room. Plenty of places to eat right outside the door. The ok: There is no real view of the ocean from that hotel. There is no service at the pool. The pool is very small. The not so ok: Gym is not a gym. Sauna is not a sauna. Room are really small. No dresser, we left everything on the luggage the whole week. There are better choices there.
I had read that some hotels in Rio were ok with their tap water and some were not. The guy who brought our bags to our room didn't say anything about it. Later, when I remembered to call the front desk to ask, the person said not to drink the tap water and to use the bottled water in the fridge. He didn't tell me there was a charge for that water! Other places I've stayed provided free bottled water if their tap water wasn't drinkable. I would have given them a higher score for their breakfast offerings; the room itself was only average.
I stayed here many years ago, and really enjoyed my stay. This trip I emailed ahead, and requested 1405.. in fairness, the request was granted, and the room was beautiful and the shower great.. and it was very clean. Issue came in the morning, when the blackout curtains didn’t do their job.. 18 inches missing, so awake at 5.45am.! But in fairness, I mentioned the issue, and it was corrected.. still though the whole room is glass walls, and the AC can’t deal with the heat generated, so the room was hot daytime. Breakfast was decent, lots of fresh fruits, breads, bacon (but not crispy :() The front desk staff, especially night and evening had an aversion to smiling.. not once.. I work in 5 star hospitality in London.. smiling at people goes a looooonngggg waaaayyyy... so this was upsetting to me. The best thing about this hotel? Kelvin the bell boy... Kelvin is interested in you, talkative without being obtrusive, and genuine... and super helpful.. Rio Design.. be more Kelvin.. he’s a credit to your hotel.. and a great recruit.. a medal for who employed him.. if I came back it would be because I knew Kelvin is there.. be more Kelvin....…
