Casa da Gente is an amazing and ecological house, with a suspended garden hanging high over the roofs and streets of the city center, providing a breath taking view on the Baia de Guanabara. Ideally located in between the bohemian and peaceful Santa Teresa neighborhood and the night lively Lapa neighbourhood, the house provides you comfort, charm and hospitality. Our breakfast is delicious and natural and we have a free WiFi.

Detailed Reviews
One of the best and friendliest places I have had the pleasure of visiting. You are welcomed with open arms (and in our case with some caipirinhas). The rooms are clean, view is gorgeous, staff is very very nice and helpful, and the breakfast is absolutely amazing; fresh fruit, fresh juices, coffee/tea, bread, jam etc.The staff/owners will help you order food in if you have trouble speaking Portuguese and don't be surprised if you end up having great conversations with them. It feels like you are at home, with the added benefit of others making your bed, changing your towels, emptying out your trash etc.
This is a place I absolutely recommend to almost anybody. The only ones I would not recommend it to are those having trouble walking stairs/hills as it is located higher up. Many cabs don't know the place, so it will be tricky finding a cab there.
TIP: A cab from./to the international airport to Casa de Gente should be about $30-$40 here (but cabbies will try to charge you $100). Ask to use the meter.
TIP2: A cab from/to the Dumont airport is usually less than R$10 ($5)
TIP3: A cab to the place for the train to Corcovado/the Christ is less than R$20 ($10)
TIP4: If your cab does not know where it is, as to go to the Santa Teresa steps or Arcos de Lapa (both are a less than 10 minutes walk from Casa da Gente)

I was looking for somewhere tranquil, but where I wouldn’t feel completely alone and I found just that in Casa Da Gente. From the moment I arrived I was made to feel welcome and I was sorry I would only be staying for one night because it’s the type of place I would definitely like to stay longer. Barbara went out of her way to recommend things to do and places to eat out and was very accommodating of my need to check out a bit later so I could change before heading to the airport. If I ever come to Rio again, this would be a top choice

The place is located in Lapa - famous for parties and the stairs (Escadria Selaron), about 10 mins of walking from the nearest metro station, so no problem going to the beach. The rooms and facilities are good for the price, but you also get an amazing view of the business district from the patio as a bonus. The staff is super kind and helpful (special thanks to Laura).

My initial plan was to spend only 1 night there on my way from Buzios to Ilha Grande but I changed plans and ended up staying there four days. I absolutely loved the place, the staff and Pauline's constant willingness to go out of her way to make my stay more comfortable. Not only did she find me a fantastic deal when I said I wanted to go to Bahia, but when my credit card didn't work online, she used her own card to book the ticket for me!! Pauline and her always-smiling-team will ensure that your stay is wonderful!
If you are looking for a super fancy place, this is probably not the right place for you. But if you are more on the bohemian and artsy side then definitely go for it! Breakfast is fresh and lovely in the garden with great view. The rooms are simple with no AC but clean. The place has a homy feeling and the staff are very helpful (even though my Portugese is really really poor!!). I would certainly stay there again.

On one hand, this place has an arty bohemian vibe to it, its bright decor, small-ish size B&B, located at the edge of Santa Teresa, nearer to old Lapa. The owner, a very friendly french lady, Pauline, is extremely helpful and she gives you all the spills and info about Rio. The breakfast is served in the courtyard which overlooks Rio and if you look further, you can vaguely see Cristo Redento across. The 3 resident cats keep guard of the place. The breakfast is the best part - freshly brewed coffee and tea, fresh juice (only one serving though), muesli with yoghurt and bread with butter and jam. You will be given your own toaster to toast your bread! Good WIFI is available at no extra charge.
On the other hand, the location of this place is rather odd. Almost no taxi driver could find this place despite all the maps and directions given. The buses stop around the Arcos de Lapa, one will have to take a deep breath and make a dash across the ghetto-like area and up the hill towards Santa Teresa, it's the same if one were to take the metro. The rooms are very simple and come with a ceiling fan (no air-conditioning) and in the Rio summer heat, it can be quite tough to get any cool air into the room despite the place being perched up the hills of Santa Teresa. The bathrooms are outside of the rooms, shared with 1 or 2 other rooms. The bathrooms can do with a few good scrubs. No toiletries are provided. The place seems like an "eco" resort as nothing seems to go down well in the toilets (I had to flush the toilet 12 times to do the job). Over the weekends, the open concerts and bars in old Lapa will be blasting their samba music all night long. While the music can be blocked off with ear plugs, the noise can be so loud that the windows actually vibrate on each beat! The bars and restaurants of Santa Teresa is another 20 minutes steep uphill climb.

Casa da gente has a nice rooftop garden, which is a very nice addition to the house. You can see great artworks throughout from a local artist who uses recycled materials. Its located by iconic steps and right by the Lapa. Pauline is very welcoming and caring person, who made my stay very pleasant. She helped to plan my days sharing tips and local secrets. Breakfast had nice fresh smoothies and homemade yogurt.

The hostel is very well located. The breakfast is fabulous with fresh fruits, homemade marmelade and a lot more... the view from the garden/terrace is outstanding and I enjoyed very much the tranquility, decoration, and specifically the local advice, tips and the trips organised by Barbara, the hostel manager :-) THANK YOU!

I stayed at Casa da Gente for five days and everything from the gracious welcome through to the room, he wonderful breakfasts ,the great location and the charming furnishings was faultless. The greatest memory however must be the staff especially Barbara with advice about where to go and what to see and always a friendly smile so I felt like a family member rather than a client. Thanks to all at Casa da Gente

We have loved our stay at Casa de Gente!
Although we arrived later than planned, we have been welcomed very nicely, Pauline took us to a local concert and gave us lots of useful tipps.
Pauline and her colleague are just the perfect hosts!
We felt there like home and we regretted we couldn't stay longer!
With love from Vienna

We only stayed one night at Casa de Gente but liked it a lot. The owner Pauline is very nice and helpful. She provided us with every imaginable information and made our stay a joy. My kids loved the charming house a lot, especially all the robot art. It is perfectly located in Santa Teresa, clean and you are served a healthy breakfast. Would recommend to stay there if you want a personal touch.
