The French designer Robert le Heros has created a place of festivity, both poetic and colourful, thus inventing a seductive "art de vivre". Casa Amarelo is a luxury GuestHouse, refined and authentic, built in 1904 on the heights of Santa Teresa, an historic area, where artists' studios border beautiful Brazilian homes and museums. It is a magical place, a mixture of the charm of an ancient building and the modernity of contemporary fixtures and fittings.

The art nouveau villa is very well preserved and carefully furnished. The rooms are large and beautiful. The house is a living jewel, in which one can really feel comfortable. It is located in the beautiful artist quarter Santa Teresa, an old tram goes to the center.

Best place to stay in Rio. We simply loved this treasure. The place is beautifully furnished, the attention given to us could not be better. We wish we could have stayed longer. It is situated at the heart of bohemian Sta Teresa, with great places to hear music at night whilst Casa Amarelho itsrlf being in a very quiet place, enjoying flora and fauna of this beautiful place.

We have stayed a couple times in this unique romantic place. The rooms are beautiful and clean. The kitchen staff are sweet and they do a great job. The only down side is the managment. Their price for drinks, breakfast and extras are way too much for what you get. Also, you are nit allowed to use the facilities once you check out. Most boutique hotels include breakfast which they dont. Most hotels world wide allow you to use their pool after checkout. Here they dont. They dont have a problem leting you know that they want you out!!! Which I find rude.

We greatly enjoyed our time at Casa Amarelo. It felt much more like staying in an old home. It's not for everyone (as evidenced by some of the negative reviews), but for us quite charming, quirky and comfortable. We enjoyed sitting up at the pool sipping a Cachça while watching the birds, riding the old elevator up to our room, having breakfast in the sun room, and being half way between the hipness of Santa Teresa's central area and Lapa's Samba bars. When the trolley is up and running the location will be perfect. But for now, be warned, there is a bit a walk up to Santa Teresa or down to Lapa. But if you like places with a unique personality, friendly staff and a relaxed ambience, you may well like Casa Amerelo. We look forward to returning.

Room Tip: Two suites have private elevator access. We did not see those, but heard they were quite special.

We stayed for 3 nights and found the whole experience fantastic. The hotel is in the Santa Teresa district ( up a hill, bohemian region) and had a wonderful stay. Our room was huge with all the normal facilities but had a large chandelier and was beautifully decorated. The staff were friendly and accommodating and gave a personal touch. Unlike chain hotels I felt much more relaxed and was happy to potter around the gardens looking at the plants and birds and at night the local fruit bats. The views were also brilliant and the breakfast superb.
I believe that these type of hotels should be supported and as in any chain hotel you could be anywhere in the world but here I felt I was in Rio with a strong French twist. I will definitely return.

My friend and I had been due to stay at a private residence for our 3 nights in Rio but due to unforeseen circumstances it was not possible so our tour company booked us into Casa Amarelo. So pleased that we stayed here, Laurent, Marianne, Joanne and co were just wonderful. absolutely loved our room (Tijuca) and so enjoyed sitting in the courtyard just down the stairs. A lovely basket of fruit was placed in our room and to my great delight it contained a mango Breakfast was superb and there was mango for us! (shame we only had one due to 2 very early starts) As there is a lovely black cat in residence I really felt at home!!

The whole property is just beautiful and so lovingly kept, could have ridden up and down in the old lift all day!
If I ever get back to Rio no question about where I would stay.

A big step away from the big hotels that often offer a fake unpersonal experience. It’s a cool old house transformed into a small hotel. Room was fine(big enough, bed was good, amenities were fine etc..). Location seemed fine as well in a quiet neighbourhood right next to lapa(area where most people go out)

What sets this hotel apart from other boutique style hotels I’ve visited is the cool atmosphere created by its 2 friendly hosts Marianne and Laurent. Marianne was there to welcome me when I arrived very late at night. She had everything prepared and really took the time to explain everything I would ever need to know about a trip to Rio without any sort of rush. I really felt welcome to ask for anything I’d need to know without being a nuissance.
The days Laurent was there and it was basically the same sort of experience.

Really a sort of family-like hotel without feeling forced.

In short. The hotel is a fun old house in a quiet area yet close to the action but what mostly sets it apart from others are the 2 open minded & free spirited people running it!

Thx for a nice stay & bonne chance

Casa Amarelo is one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever stayed. I and my husband visited Rio in 2012 and we stayed in Casa Amarelo. The place is beautiful, the rooms are extraordinary, the hotel is very stylish and people are very kind. The only disadvantage was that the staff did not speak english only the hotel manager, who was not there all the time. the first days we used taxi to move around, but then this was a very expensive , so we decided to take the bus which was very convenient from Santa Teresa Hill. In general if I would visit Rio again I would choose Casa Amarelo once more!

Hi, I am inquiring as to the relative safety of the immediate area around the hotel. Thank you, John

And by the way, the hotel itself is a fortress. Built in the 18th century on a very steep slope, it's protected by a high fence and entered through a long tunnel with a locked grated door, going directly into the elevator and from there - to the reception. If not a place of luxury and extreme comfort, at least this property is an unforgettable experience. And not a bad one.
